Not many people know about this charming B&B in Vallejo, which is a short 20-25 minute drive to Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. The B&B is a few years old and is run by the lovely tandem of Evelyn and Dennis, who took a 19th century luxury house and completely restored it a few years ago with beautiful antiques. The result is a charming B&B with tons of character and a unique atmosphere. The B&B was recently featured on HGTV's show "If These Walls Could Talk."

Pros:
- The value can't be beat. B&B's in Napa and Sonoma are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Staying at Starr saves you probably around 33-50% on a comparable property, which allows you to use your money on fine dining and wine.
- Breakfast was generous with three courses, and the proprietors were willing to accomodate guests at many different times in the morning for breakfast.
- There is a wide variety of choices for rooms, and each has their own charm. Even the "low-end" rooms like the Americana room (where we stayed) were nicely outfitted with antique furniture and were impeccably clean.
- The proprietors are extremely helpful and love giving tips on their favorite wineries and restaurants.

Cons:
- The main con is location, in the sense that you're not directly inside either valley. This means it's harder to go back to your B&B during the day to change or relax. Also, the B&B is located in a safe but not particularly attractive part of Vallejo.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this B&B for all types of travelers. As long as you have a car and are willing to commute a bit longer to the valleys, you'll be very pleased with your experience here.

  • Liked — Value, breakfast, owners are great
  • Disliked — Location can be a problem if you want to be inside the valley

My sister and I had a delightful stay in the Rose Room. We peeked in a couple other rooms, and they were gorgeous.
Convenient location, wonderful breakfast, and the owners were very friendly and helpful.
Be sure to watch for it on "If Walls Could Talk" in Sept.

My fiance and I stayed at the Starr Mansion for 4-nights in the Starr Suite. We were in town for the NASCAR race at Infineon in Sonoma -- which was an easy drive from the bed and breakfast. It was my fiance's first experience at a bed and breakfast, and he loved it! -- he is offically hooked on bed and breakfasts now. Meanwhile I myself have stayed at a number of bed and breakfasts across the country, and am also an innkeeper at a bed and breakfast in New Mexico, so my expectations for bed and breakfasts are pretty high. The Starr Mansion definitely met and even at times exceeded my expectations. Dennis and Evelyn are fabulous hosts, and their home truly is beautiful. The 3-course breakfast in the morning (along with the conversation with Dennis and Evelyn) was yummy, and they were very accommodating in making my fruit parfait "anit-banana" since I am allergic to bananas. In addition they also had vegetarian sausage links and/or patties for me since I am also a vegetarian. In the afternoon we enjoyed chatting with Dennis, Evelyn, and fellow guests over a cheese and cracker platter and wine or ice water in the beautiful victorian style sitting room. Dennis and Evelyn were so helpful with dining and activity suggestions... the conversations with them were wonderful (they are so funny!)... and their hospitality is top notch. Prior to our arrival I had asked them if they knew of a place that sold sno-cones in the area, because my fiance had never had one before. They were unable to find a place, but to our surprise on our first night they came up to our room with homemade sno-cones! Turns out they had borrowed a friend's sno-cone maker and went out and bought the flavors, etc. I couldn't believe it! Such sweethearts. So we all sat in the sitting room of the Starr Suite and enjoyed sno-cones and friendly conversation.

Our room was beautiful (the pictures on the website do not do it justice!!), and our stay was so relaxing and wonderful. We definitely plan on going back to the Starr Mansion in a year and staying (hopefully!) in the same room.

Thank you so much to Dennis and Evelyn for everything! Best wishes to you... may you have many more years of success and happiness in your bed and breakfast and in your personal lives. Next time we will have to play a round of Scrabble with Evelyn -- or at least Josh will play with Evelyn while Dennis and I sit there resigned to losing. Haha. ;-P

Starr Mansion Inn is a true joy.

First of all, the B&B is sited in an exceptional location - you can get to Oakland, Alameda, SF, Napa, Sonoma and even Sacramento with a minimum of fuss and stress. The Inn looks like what you expect a classic B&B be - preched high on a hill, startling architecture and a dominating presence over the surrounding area. The gardens around the place are truly beautiful and set the whole Inn off.

Best part was the ownership, management team - open and friendly - the kind of people you wish were your neighbors. These folks live in the Inn, have put themselves into facility in many ways and love what they are doing - it comes across every moment you spend with them. We had to drag ourselves out of there in the morning, otherwise we have spent all day enjoying their company.

Room was large, comfortable and quiet. Well furnished in the period style. The breakfasts were a real treat - three courses, prepared from scratch and well presented - the kind of breakfast you would like to have everyday of your life, but wouldn't have the patience and skill to assemble yourself.

Perhaps needles to say, Starr Mansion Inn will be our first choice when returning to the Bay area.

The Starr Mansion is what a Bed and Breakfast place used to be:quaint and cozy lodging in someone's home with a home-cooked breakfast , all at a fair price. We arrived rather late at night and were cordially greeted with a nice glass of California red wine. Our room was five star luxury at a three star price. In the morning our breakfast was gourmet all the way with great advice on touring the Napa and Sonoma wineries. The mansion itself sits on a hill above Vallejo with fine views over the town and the Mare Island naval base. Its a true Victorian classic built in 1869! We don't recommend lodgings everday but Starr Mansion gets our highest accolades!
