“Beautiful, elegant, boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

This is a beautifully restored, elegant, sophisticated boutique hotel-- a standout in Lake County. For similar accommodations an hour south in the Russian River Valley, one would pay more than twice the price and get much less attentive service. We enjoyed all of the amenities over Labor Day weekend-- swimming at the tranquil pool, delicious complimentary breakfast (with quiche and scones on the weekends), outdoor brunch with live music at the Blue Wing Saloon Restaurant, reading on the veranda. Complimentary wireless internet and (small) DVD library good for entertaining children in the evening. The only downside is that the town of Upper Lake itself is something of a ghost town-- aside from a small grocery store, a simple cafe, and an antique shop or two, the Tallman Hotel itself is practically the only sign of life on the main street-- and the town itself is not directly adjacent to any lake. However, it's only a 10 minute drive to the nearby Blue Lakes, with plenty of swimming, boating, fishing, and sunbathing opportunities.

Room Tip: The hotel has a variety of room types, including balcony room overlooking the courtyard, one bedroom...

This hotel could not get any nicer. The reservations are made easily, the greeting from the staff is warm and welcoming, and the rooms are so beautiful and comfortable! We've stayed here several times and it just keeps getting better. The proprietors, Lynne & Bernie Butcher have carved out a slice of heaven in a most unlikely place...Upper Lake California, which is one of the small towns surrounding Clear Lake. The hotel's past is honored and preserved with the beautiful and detailed decor. The rooms in the main building are wonderful with restored plumbing from the era, and a veranda on which to enjoy a morning coffee or afternoon tea or wine. The breakfast is just what you want...fresh fruit, juice, delicious coffee and a great tea selection, house made scones and pastries and a beautiful dining room in which to enjoy.

This trip we were fortunate to book on the weekend of the Labor Day Blues Festival. The great boogie woogie pianist Wendy Dewitt and an all-girls blues band called Laura Price and GIRLS GOT THE BLUES rocked the block for miles around!

The ever expanding wine business in Lake County has grown every year we've visited, so wine tasting is a must. I'm not a gambler, but there are casinos very nearby if that's of interest. All in all, just a beautiful place to relax and enjoy true hospitality. It's a 5-star experience at a 3-star price...go out of your way to stay here----it's worth it!

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room with a Japanese soaking tub!

We visited Clear Lake this last week and just absolutely loved this hotel. The entire property is very well maintained and all details were well thought out. The breakfast was a very nice touch. We will definitely be back!

We have spent the last two weeks traveling up and down the West Coast from San Francisco to the Olympic Peninsula and back and have settled in for the last few days at the Tallman Hotel here in Upper Lake. The place is a real gem, beautifully restored and renovated, staffed with the most helpful and intelligent hosts, and next to a great bar/restaurant owned and operated by the same family. The rooms are great. The grounds are nice, and you can really relax here while taking day trips to various wineries around Clear Lake--a geological marvel, by the way. What we really like is that the place is low-key but also very together in its presentation and amenities. Upper Lake itself is very small and slow, but everything you would want or need is here. The nearby vineyards, the lake for boating and fishing, the mountains for hiking, and best of all--no crowds. A perfect capstone for our trip!

Room Tip: We are in the hotel proper in the mid-priced "veranda" room pictures on the Tallman websit...

We stayed in this lovely hotel on our return from Ashland, Oregon. The service was friendly and efficient, the room was delightful and the ambiance was terrific. Our room had an outdoor, wood, soaking tub, pre-filled with fresh, heated water - very relaxing. There was a door from the bathroom to the patio and another large door from the bedroom to the patio, which had an outdoor shower. The room was fairly large with attractive furnishings, comfortable, upholstered arm chairs and nice linens. The room came with extra towels for the outdoor tub, robes, coffee and tea. The hotel has a supply of DVD's which can be borrowed.
The restaurant has an outdoor seating area which is completely shaded by the trees. Many small lights on the trees, comfortable seating and good food make for a memorable experience. I definitely recommend this hotel if you are in the area.

This was our third visit. It's a distance from our home, but we make the trip. There are some things to do around the hotel but for us it is all about the room, the pool, the soaking tub, the breakfast and dinner at the Blue Wing Saloon.

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and get the soaking tub with the outdoor shower (indoor shower also available but in...

We found this hotel quite by accident on a road trip we were taking from San Francisco to Canada. We were looking for a cheap place to lay our heads as it was starting to get dark and almost stopped at the first motel off the highway, but we saw this road leading up to a small town so we decided to take a look. At the end of this road was the Tallman hotel. We fell in love with it immediately just from the outside! Although a bit out of our budget, we decided to splurge and stay there over night. It was definitely worth every single penny. Each room was beautifully restored to its original splendor and the attention to detail was perfect. The bed was so comfortable that it was hard to get up in the morning. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was a shame we had to hit the road the next day because I could have spent the rest of my vacation there! Oh, and the food was also excellent at the Blue Wing Saloon next door but run by them, but I'll write a separate review for that!
