Pulling up to the historic Tallman Hotel on Main Street in Upper Lake County is like stepping back in time. This country hotel, built in the 1890’s, is certainly the best lodging option in Lake County. The 17 room luxury facility offers high speed internet with a computer available to guests in the lobby. I purposely didn’t bring a laptop with me on this trip, but like a security blanket; it was nice to know that one was waiting for me nearby.
As you walk into the parlor and reception area you’ll notice the nicely decorated dining room where guests eat breakfast in the morning. I half expected someone to walk out from the back office in period clothing to check me in. Owner Lynne Butcher showed me one of four guestrooms in the hotel. As it was the slow season with lots of room choices available, I opted for one of eight Garden Rooms, on the bottom floor, outside the hotel. My room had a private back deck and a teak Japanese “Ofuro” soaking tub. This probably would have been very cool on a warmer day, but it being February, I passed on the outdoor tub experience.
After check-in I drove to the nearby Ceago Vinegarden in Nice, next to the village of Lucerne, on the north shore of Clearlake. If you enjoy wine tasting, you’ll want to check out this place. Jim Fetzer is the mastermind behind this biodynamic and organic grape and olive growing facility. I don’t know why, but the Hacienda-style compound reminded me of the Eagles 1976 Hotel California album cover. Yes, I know, I’m dating myself with that oldies reference.
I returned to the Tallman and dinner at the neighboring Blue Wing Saloon and Café that evening. First opened in the 1880’s, you’ll see why this saloon and the restored livery stable next door reminded me of a Hollywood set from days gone by.
In the morning, I walked over to the hotel for a continental breakfast of fresh juices, fruits, cereals and a basket of wonderful, fresh baked scones. I’d like to come back here in the summer with my husband and kids so we can enjoy the swimming pool, outdoor garden area and all the water activities that this huge lake has to offer. The monthly Thursday evening “Concerts with Conversation” sounded interesting, too.
