I don't eat at "fancy" places very often, so I was glad to accompany a group of friends here for a special steak dinner. We chose to sit in the bar ... and apparently that was a mistake. It took over an hour for us to get our food, while other people in the place ordered, ate and left.
Our waiter kept coming out and babbling disjointed apologies - meanwhile repeatedly dabbing his thinning hair line with a towel and muttering about sweating! So at least he acknowledged that yes, our food was greatly delayed, but we never did get a good reason WHY. At one point our water babbled something about the kitchen running out of a dish that one of our party ordered, but I fail to see why a substitution should have set our meal back 60 minutes.
I've waited tables and my husband has worked as a line cook: we know that things can go wrong in the kitchen. But taking over an hour to get food for a party of 6 is unforgivable. Especially since we had friends in another group of 5 in the dining room who were fed and gone long before we got our meal.
When it came time to pay our tabs, we got separate checks okay, but then our waiter seemed incapable of taking all our tickets at once, but rather took one or two at a time, rang those up, and then came back for the next two while the rest of us sat and waited.
The food WAS good. My filet mignon was the most perfect medium rare possible. But when people are paying $27 a plate - and $6 per item if they wanted any sort of vegetables or side dish - I expect the service to be up to par. Deeply, deeply disappointing and I'd have complained to a manager if I'd identified who the manager was.
