“Lovely Place to Relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

McCaffrey House is a lovely place to relax and enjoy life in the slow lane. Our family of six, ranging in age from 16 to 84 and accompanied by the three family dogs, met there from points North and South for a four-night get-together. I wasn't sure how that would work out, especially when met by the McCaffrey's own two dogs. But it was only minutes till all concerned were happy with the arrangement! The house and its grounds are beautiful, comfortable and well-designed for the purpose; the owners and staff are welcoming and friendly, but never intrusive. Our family gathered together for breakfast, took separate paths during the day, and returned to sip a bit of wine in the living room. Just like home, only better. We loved the charm of Twain Harte and what felt like our own house in the woods. And we all came away with a renewed appreciation of California's fantastic natural beauty. Know in advance that the inn is pet-friendly and that there are stairs to climb. Then, just breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a stroll in the woods while you're waiting for one of Stephanie's good breakfasts. Highly recommended.

We just returned from vacation where we stayed 4 nights in the Evergreen Room. The room and amenities were very comfortable and welcoming. We usually sleep on a king size bed, but were very comfortable on the queen bed. Michael and Stephanie are excellent hosts and were always ready with information or advice on what to see or do in the area. The house is beautiful, and the dogs made us feel right at home! The only thing to be aware of is that there are stairs that need to be negotiated from the parking lot to the house (and of course again in the house where the rooms are upstairs and downstairs), so don't pack too much in your rollerbag; you'll have to carry it!

Thank you so much for your kind review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay and look forward to having you stay with us again. We are always here to help with your luggage. What I've discovered over the years is that often when we offer to help with luggage and our guests decline the help.

We stayed for 3 nights with Michael and Stephanie in their beautiful home, they made us feel very welcome and right at home from the off. We were greeted by finnegan and Blue their 2 dogs like we were long lost relatives, even the cat made an appearance.

We had booked the Evergreen room and had no regrets, it is lovely as the website pictures show, the top quilt gets whipped off as you are shown to your room, but if you really want to see it, it's kept in the room closet.

First impression wasthe view from our double aspect, to the front we had a view of the deck and forest beyond, the deck has a number of bird feeders and we could not believe the wildlife that used it. We saw humming birds, jays, squirrels. The humming birds were incredible and so close.

Our side aspect was a balcony again overlooking the forest. The room also had a gas stove/ heater which was useful to take off the chill of the morning mountain air.

We could have done with bigger or more towels and coffee facility's would have been nice but other touches are providedl like chocolates, and you can get morning and evening coffee on request. You can hear bathroom fans at night, they come on with the toilet light, not sure if they could be set to come on with shower use only.

Be warned there is no elevator and the steps are steep to the car park so choose a ground floor room if you have walking difficulties.

Breakfasts are served at 9, you get what is served but this was always wholesome and filing, juice, cereals, fruit and coffee are provided. We shared a table with fellow guests and it was nice to chew the fat over the previous days experience. Stephanie is gold mine of information and will help you plan your day.

Location wise the property is about 1.5 - 2 hours from Yosemite but is also located to see the Calvedros big trees amazing and well worth a visit, murphys for wine tasting and Columbia for prospecting and gold panning great fun. We would have missed this experience if we had stayed in Yosemite.

Twain Harte is quaint, we recommend the prospector, read the reviews though they are spot on and don't go if you are fussy. The rock is friendly and good. All you can eat ribs on Tuesdays.

We loved our stay in the mountains after the brashness of Vegas and would recommend the McCaffrey place without hesitation.

Room Tip: Garden facing like he Evergreen room

Thank you for taking the time to review our inn. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Quite often I find myself taking for granted the breath taking beauty of our forest. It's always nice to be reminded. Living in this inn is like living in a giant tree house.

My husband and I stayed at the McCaffrey house for two nights & had a wonderful time. Stephanie was so nice and upgraded us to a room with a king-sized bed since my husband and I are tall. The house is beautiful, comfortable, and clean. The Wedgewood Room was perfect and the bed & pillows were incredibly comfortable. (We really appreciated that, since some places are nice but not comfortable!)

The breakfasts were delicious, and the wine & cheese in the evenings were appreciated. The owners are so friendly, and their two dogs are very sweet. I agree with the others: If you are not a person who wants to be around dogs, this may not be the place for you. There were 3 other guest dogs at the house while we were there. They were well-behaved, so we didn't mind a bit.

We look forward to returning one day! Highly recommend this B&B. :)

Room Tip: The rooms in the back of the house have a beautiful view of the trees. Our room was in the front of...

So glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for the nice review. We are pet friendly and quite often there are more than just our pets here. Of course Finnegan and Blue are happy to share their home with other dogs. What I've discovered over the years of being a pet friendly inn, is that our guests who bring their dogs have wonderful, friendly, really clean animals. I'm happy you found this to be true. Hope you are able to return soon.

If you are looking for a special place to get away from it all then you should think about heading to Twain Harte and staying at the McCaffrey House B&B. This was our second time staying the weekend in the same room in one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The french doors lead out to a balcony looking out to the redwoods and provides an excellent place to sip wine and relax. Speaking of wine, there is a wine and cheese reception each afternoon in the living room where you can sit and chat with the hosts and the other guests or just browse through their amazing collection of antiques. The grounds are also beautiful and inviting for a quiet stroll. Located just outside of the village of Twain Harte it is quite and peaceful, but just a few minutes drive to some great eateries and just 6 miles to Black Oak Casino. Breakfast is always a wonderful and special meal. They are dog friendly, so if that is not your thing then you might not enjoy it as much as I did when their golden retriever was keeping my feet warm under the dining room table :-)

Room Tip: The Wedgewood room is the only room with a king bed and is where we stayed both times.

Thanks for coming back to stay with us and for your wonderful review. Finnegan knows he is not suppose to be in the dining room, but we often find him under a table! I'm glad you find the bed so comfortable, it's really important to me that our guests sleep well and feel cozy in our beds. Come see us again soon.

We had the most wonderful experience here with Stephanie, Michael and their family. As hosts they cannot do enough for you, from making dinner reservations, to mapping your route and preparing a delicious breakfast. Our Yorkie was welcomed with open arms. The bed was so comfortable and our room was lovely. If you are you are ever near Twain Harte or Yosemite National Park, this is the place to stay. You'll feel right at home from the minute you walk in the door.

We love the McCaffrey House! Stephanie and Michael McCaffrey helped us host the perfect wedding! We enjoyed a weekend stay with all of our wedding guests and the general consensus was that everyone felt at home and wish to come back. The rooms are beautiful and exceptionally clean. The food was scrumptious, the staff was warm and engaging and the views from all of the rooms are exceptional. We highly recommend this BnB if you are looking for a lovely place to stay in Twain Harte.
