“nice hotel in Truckee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2008

The Holiday Inn Express Truckee is your typical HI Express. it is located adjacent to the Donner lake state park in the North Tahoe region. the hotel was clean and the staff was nice. there was a problem with the power for the breakfast area, the circuit breaker triped a couple of times during the week.

During my snowboarding trips to Northstar, Sugar Bowl, and Squaw Valley, I've stayed at the Best Western, Hampton Inn, and HI Express. They're all pretty similar, but I like the HI Express the best.

First, I usually find that the HI Express is the cheapest of the three. The rooms at the HI Express are much larger than the ones at the Hampton Inn. The service has also been friendly and efficient. The rooms have been comfortable, clean, and are in excellent shape. The free wireless Internet is fast, and easy to access.

My only complaints are about the breakfast. The quality isn't that great, the seating area is too small, and their coffee is horrendous. But, it's still a great, comfortable stay after a fun day of snowboarding.

  • Liked — Large, clean rooms
  • Disliked — Terrible coffee

We stayed here for 4 nights. It was a very nice, quiet, clean and comfortable room. The breakfast was pretty good too. It was located relatively close to Royal Gorge where we xc skied. Also, it is about a half hour from north Lake Tahoe. My only minor complaints were a couple of the people who work there were not very friendly -- and we were promised chocolate chip cookies every afternoon and they were available only one of the four. No biggie.

We decided to go up to Boreal to ski and found the HIE in the area. With a wife and two kids(8/10), the one advantage is that they usually take 4 to a room. Expensive at $194 but 1 room instead of two.

Excellent easy access from the highway; great in the middle of a blizzard.

Entrance needs a double door system to prevent cold air, but otherwise welcoming double volume entrance with complimentary coffee bar and internet station.

Good volume rooms with 2 Queens, empty fridge, microwave, TV with cable. And vending machines at not too extortionate prices.
Sheets were stained with some previous blood or material. They should've chucked it away instead of re-using it. They were clean, though.Bad PR, guys. But reception brought up sheets as soon as I complained.

Hot tub outside in the pool area was amazing after skiing . You could sit in the tub at 11 at night, with snow falling on you and cook gently at 100+ degrees. Pool covered in snow.

Breakfast included and of the generic buffet/sausages in hamburger shapes that sems to be ubiquitous in the US. But good scrambled eggs, juices and yoghurt.

Not great value but a great position for visiting the ski areas.

  • Liked — big room, hot tub, cable tv
  • Disliked — no real food on site, cold draft in entrance

A good stay for the night, with the room pretty clean, and a good size. Nothing great, but also nothing bad, so I think this place would be a good stay if you were going to Tahoe and did not mind a little drive down to the lake, or the mountains.

  • Disliked — Not the cleanest, but nothing bad

On fairly short notice, we decided to ski after the first really big storm in Tahoe - just befor Xmas. We wanted to try some of the smaller ski areas this time. We chose Truckee as our base. Given that our trip was a week and a half away and it would be during the Christmas holiday we were pretty much forced to take what we could get for lodging. At nearly double the normal rate (yikes!), we selected Holiday Inn Express. After reading several bad reviews I was ready for anything. We were delightfully pleased.
The room was clean, bed was comfortable. They have an expanded continental breakfast which includes drinks, cereal (hot and cold), yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cinnamon rolls, bagels, toast, bacon or sausage, eggs and sometimes biscuits and gravy. What more do you need? There's is always a bit of a breakfast traffic jam as the area is rather small, but if you are happy to be there to ski, a little crowding while getting your breakfast is no big deal. We found the front desk staff to always be helpful - weather it was suggestions for places to ski with the family or where to eat dinner. We would definately stay there again. Maybe this time we would be brave enough to use the hot tub in the snow!

It's a nice new property, but I had two days filled with problems. The wireless internet doesn't work throughout the hotel, which they tried to blame on the snow! (See below) The morning breakfast that was supposed to be hot, wasn't! Half of the bins that were there for something were empty. The breakfast was supposed to be availableat 6, but at 6:30 I left the hotel to get something outside as they still didn't have it up. My wake-up call for 6 am didn't come until 6:15. The TV that they had in my room was about 15 years old that proclaimed MTS Stereo, a term that hasn't been used since the 90's! The speakers were broken and you'd get a distorted sound, which was obviously annoying. I had already unpacked before I noticed this problem and wasn't about to change rooms again. I had to change rooms earlier in the day because the room's internet didn't have enought signal to keep me connected to the internet.

I'd never return to this property, but like I said, if it's the last resort available, and you don't need any of the above offerings, then by all means give them a try...I'll wave at you as I try another place in town!@!
