If you loathe the constant abuse at high-quality terrain mountains like Squaw Valley, North Star is a nice break, with professional management, quality infrastructure, decent grooming, great snowmaking, and friendly staff.
Unfortunately, they've chosen to remove any semblance of natural-ness or physical or mental challenge from the place by dynamiting inconvenient rock outcrops, glading excessively, expanding chairlifts into every square inch of their boundary area, and failing to open the side-country access gates except for very, very rare occasions.
The effect is to put you to sleep quickly, since there is really no corner left to explore, nowhere to challenge yourself, nowhere to make decisions, nowhere to hike for earned turns, and nowhere to have to think. Ever.
It's like skiing on a beginner's golf course. Good for business meetings and for getting your legs strong for backcountry touring.
On the other hand, summer lift-assisted mt. biking is spectacular!
