“Condos are a crapshoot”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

Northstar manages the rentals of the many condos on the property. We were looking for a place for 3 nights that was centrally located in the north Tahoe area. Website pictures looked good, so we reserved a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath condo for my wife, my self, and our son. The person who helped us said they were not very busy, and she would get us a nicer unit close to the village. These are NOT cheap places, so while I didn't expect luxury, I did expect somewhat modern, clean, and functional. Not what I got.

When we got the first set of keys, we opened the front door to a dump. The carpet looked like 30 year old shag, with large stains, similar to what would happen if you had a big dog that was not potty trained. The furniture was ugly and dated, the kitchen barely functional. The cheapest appliances possible. Dingy. I have rented a LOT of vacation condos, and this was the worst.

We went back to the rental office. I asked if anyone in that office had actually SEEN the inside of this unit, they shrugged and said all units were 'inspected'. They were able to find another unit. It was quite old and a bit beat up, but the kitchen was updated. Furniture was fine, bed lumpy but usable. It was a OK ski type condo for a bunch of young people, and worked for a couple of days for us. Being the summer, it was quite warm outside, and the units do not have central fans or air conditioning. Not even a celling fan! It gets quite stuffy.

Bottom line - The condos at Northstar that we saw were old and threadbare. The management has dubious 'inspection' tastes, and apparently does not notice obvious failings. You MAY get a decent unit, or you may not. If they were full, and we would have been stuck. I would have left and not paid the credit card charge. That is how bad it was.

If you plan on going, get pictures of the ACTUAL unit. Better yet, find a better complex.

Room Tip: You need to inspect the actual unit you will get. Not sure anyone else does.

Bad coordination in between the services let us stay 3 hours outside without being able to enter our suite - without trying to help or at least... excuses + one card to access the building was not working but the front desk was not able to give us an other card, we would have to return to Northstar Drive to get a new card ?? Not really nice welcome to the Village which was really noisy at night...

If your a trail biker it's the happening spot. We travelled with 17 yr old boys who love the hiking and biking the roller skating, pool and sports area. There were even gondola tickets included. I liked the area not necessarily the room itself. Small room but had a balcony, couldn't get a better location and we were only there to sleep.

I have never stayed in a place so outdated and dirty. There is no aircon and the temperatures were in the 90s. I asked for updated condo, but never got one - that is if there are any!! We were the US Junior Amateur. At least 3 groups walked out. No wonder they take your full payment 2 weeks before you begin your stay!!! The staff didn't care. I could not believe the state of the condo. The bathroom was disgusting and dirty - a dirty wash cloth remained on the floor behind the toilet the whole time we were there!!! When I opened the dishwasher to put in our dirty crockery - it was already full of dirty things that had been there for at least a week!!! They also take a $2.19 charge for Housekeeping Tip!!! They never even came until I demanded they go and clean the whole condo. They half did the bathroom and the kitchen. The hard floors had never been mopped for I dont know how long. There were only 2 restaurants open in the village and starbucks closed at 6pm!!! If you are used to living in a clean environment this is not the place for you. Do yourself a favor and stop elsewhere. This place is disgusting and whats more they dont even care!!! Full rate for the condo was over $400 a night.

Room Tip: Stay at the Rutz Carlton

Hello Liz,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are aware of your unique situation and we reached out to you personally during your visit. We gave you a 50% off discount for your entire stay due to your experience, which totaled $110/night plus tax and fees. You demanded a full refund and threatened to "Trip Advisor" us if we did not accommodate your request. We also reversed the housekeeping gratuity due to your experience. During your stay, Rubicon Pizza, Tacos Jalisco, The Chocolate Bar, and Manzanita at the Ritz-Carlton were open for business. We apologize for the lack of air conditioning during our hottest time of the year, and a record heat wave during your stay. We are aware that you had an unsatisfactory experience, and are here to discuss this further at your leisure. Please contact me at northstarweb@vailresorts.com with any additional concerns.

Thank you,

Clean and comfy condos, quiet and all amenities, free wifi. Close to the bike park and village, lots to do. Fireplaces and air so you're good no matter the weather. We will stay here again. Wonderful package deals and near the gondola too.

My husband and I rented a one bedroom loft condo in The Village to attend a family wedding. The condo had not been updated since 1975. It had wall to wall maroon carpet and old furniture. The bedroom was upstairs where there is a half bath; the full bath is downstairs, making it awkward to shower and get dressed. Since it was summer, the temperature was hot, for the mountains, around 83 degrees. The condo has no air conditioning, but two very loud fans. The one ceiling fan in the great room did not work. Because we were guests for the wedding, we received a "special" rate of $185/night and there is a two-night minimum requirement. The Village shops and restaurants are close and convenient.

We rented the two bedroom, 3rd floor overlooking the outdoor ice rink and mountains. Lots to do for kids and adults in the Winter and Summer months. Great shops and restaurants right there so you never need to leave the resort.
