My family and I stayed at the Doubletree for four nights at the end of May. The following is a very detailed review of our experience. Overall, our hotel room, interaction with staff, and location were very good. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return again.

From the moment we entered the Doubletree, we were warmly greeted by the baggage staff, then front desk staff. Even the person playing the piano in the lobby was friendly. There is ample free parking in a well lit area. There is also security staff visible at all times in the lobby.

We were assigned Room #617 which is in the main tower of the hotel. We had a king suite with a refrigerator in the room. The room faced Hawthorne Boulevard and had a balcony with the rooftop of the first floor lobby and restaurant. The balcony is a nice size in which you can step out and enjoy the fresh ocean air but no outdoor furniture. There was a Wolfgang Puck coffee maker with Wolfgang Puck coffee and tea products. The bathroom has a several Neutrogena products. Other than a light stain on the ottoman of the wingback chair, the room was clean. The pillows were quite comfortable (six total) with an extra pillow and blanket in the closet. The bathroom is small by some hotel standards but is probably in line with a bathroom in the average American home.

The closet was longer than usual and had an ironing board and folding luggage rack available. The room also had a work table and a radio with MP3 line. We also experience easy access to the free Internet with absolutely no problems at all the entire time of our stay. Safe deposit boxes are available at no charge by contacting the front desk. A gift shop is open in the lobby from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. I also noted an ATM machine in the lobby.

There are laundry and dry cleaning services available through the hotel. Also, a coin operated laundry facility is located on the 11th Floor of the Tower Building from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Laundry soap is available at the gift shop.

Ice and soft drink machines are locate on every floor except 2, 4, and 5. Soft drinks are available on each flop except 11. Additional beverages and snacks are available in the gift shop on the lobby level.

We noted airline staff (crew and flight attendants) from Singapore Airlines staying at our hotel as well.

The hotel is in a very busy area which includes the Del Amo Fashion Center (mall). Though the roadways are busy, this brings a lot of amenities that include banks (Wells Fargo, Wachovia, Chase, Hanmi Bank, HSBC Bank, and Bank of America), many restaurants (Coco’s, Chili’s, Subway, Outback, Melting Pot, Lucille’s BBQ, PF Chang’s China Bistro, Black Angus, Koo Koo Roo, Red Lobster, and Soup Plantation) in addition to the meal options available at the hotel itself.

The location in itself makes the hotel a fabulous choice. Many retailers include Target, Ralphs grocery story, JC Penney, Sears, Macys, Staples, Crate and Barrel, Barnes and Noble, Lucky Strikes Lane (bowling alley) and the 18 AMC Theaters (movies). There is also the Madrona Marsh Preserve in the area supported by the City of Torrance.

Two miles away is the South Bay Gallerie which features Nordstroms, Macy’s, 140 specialty stores, and 16 AMC Theaters (movies).

Also two miles away is the Redondo Beach, Harbor and Pier. You can walk, skate, jog or bike at this location. Twenty minutes away is the Aquarium of the Pacific at Long Beach. Our family planned on commuting to this area daily to attend a convention, and the ride really is not that far.

To address previous comments about old furnishings, our room looked modern and new. The carpet looked fairly new and so did the décor. Our TV armoire appeared worn as though someone took out their frustrations on the door. However, there was not an outdated feeling at all.

Overall, our experience at this hotel was very positive. We would stay here again in the future.

I've stayed at this property about 20 times over the past 6 years. If you are chasing Hilton points, like me, then this is your best bet in Torrance. If not, do yourself a favor and spend $20 a night more and stay at the Marriott across the street. It's way nicer.

Transfering it from being a Hilton over to Doubletree was more representative of what it is. As many reviewers have said, on the surface it looks great. Beautiful palm trees out front and marble floors in the lobby. However, once you get to the sleeping rooms, things change. First off, when you check in, make sure you get a room in the tower, not the older low-rise portion of the building. The older section has exterior hallways vs interior halls in the high rise. The high rise rooms are quieter, but not much nicer---though all are clean. All of the bathrooms are tiny. The ceilings are rather low in the rooms and hallways of the high rise, which is rather odd. Parking is free, which is nice. The new workout room is a blessing as the old room was nasty at best. Room service is predicable--stick with safe choices and you'll be good to go. The executive lounge is one positive of this hotel if you are a Diamond or Gold Hhonors member. The staff that run it are nice and they do a good job keeping it stocked and clean.

No need to spend money here in the restaurant as there are many chain restaurants within walking distance.

The sleeping rooms got a redo a few years ago---but it's pretty hard to change this place without gutting it and starting over. Flat panel TVs would help along with some update furniture and fresh carpet.

I stayed here for business in April and was expecting something less than great from the reviews I saw posted. I think they just did a major renovation since I didn't encounter any of the problems or shoddiness in earlier reviews. I stayed in a suite which was a good size (not huge) and very well laid out. The bedding was amazing and the bathroom was well appointed. The towels were good and the service here was also good. My only complaint was the very large tub (i liked that) was a bit sad looking, but still worked great, so not worth fretting over. I recommend this hotel compared to others I've stayed in this area previously. One convenience is that despite the fact this isn't a residential area, this property is on restaurant row - so you had your pick of Benihana to Marie Callendars - all within walking distance of the hotel. Nice pool here too and the gym looks brand new and is well stocked with cardio equipment.

I'm a Hilton fan, but my latest stays are getting to be disappointing and this was no exception. I stayed here for 4 days on business and it was certainly not up to my expectations of a Hilton brand hotel. Check-in was quick, but after stepping off the elevator I was greeted by a dank and musty smell the length of the hallway to my room, as well as ripped out fire alarms apparently undergoing replacement. Thankfully the room did not have the same dank smell as the hallway. There was no microwave in the room and only a small refrigerator that dripped water from the ice cube tray onto my food. I like to buy some staples for an extended stay and this fact was disappointing. I ordered a room service salad for dinner the first night and it was very decent. There are numerous restaurants and a grocery store all within walking distance which was one of the positives for this hotel.

As far as service, my towels were simply taken and not replaced so by my last day, I was down to my last towel. Really, how hard can it be to replace towels? Some days my coffee wasn't replenished for my in-room coffee maker. I guess I should have checked the night before. There were long hairs in my sink (not mine) and you could tell that the cleaning staff only went through the motions of cleaning. On checkout, the Zip checkout line wasn't answered forcing me to stand in line downstairs simply to turn in my key. When I mentioned it on checkout, I was met with an immediate and rehearsed "We're very sorry about that, have a nice day".

Again, this was a business trip and certainly nothing to write home about. But even for business, I'll find somewhere else next time due to the general sloppiness of the hotel and the cleaning service.

  • Liked — The numerous restaurants within walking distance.
  • Disliked — The musty odor, and the general lack of attention the hotel staff seemed to have.

Aug 4, 2008 | Trip type: Family

We stayed at the hotel for 5 nights/6 days. The hotel entrance is very nice. My husband, 3 year old daughter, and I stayed in a double bed room. Although the room was a little stuffy when we first walked in, we were able to get the AC going and get the humidity out of the room. The room was a typical room, but the beds were really nice. Very enjoyable to sleep there, which is mostly what we did since we were visiting family. The bathroom was stocked with Neutrogena toiletries and the room had a variety of coffees and teas. Very nice with a preschooler that wakes up early. The only drawback was the air conditioner...a little loud - good white noise while sleeping?

The room service was good. We had breakfast there every morning and liked it. Nothing fancy, we didn't partake of the buffet although it looked pretty good. All of the staff were extremely welcoming and we did get the warm chocolate chip cookie (a plus with a 3 year old that was on the "verge" from the airport).

Overall, a very nice experience.

  • Liked — The price was great - flat rate for the entire stay.
  • Disliked — The noisy room air-conditioner.
