I choose Hilton brands for the quality of the rooms, but am finding that the Doubletree brand is slipping quickly. My stay at the Doubletree Torrance / South Bay CA was this type of situation. I arrived at the hotel around 10:45pm; on Sunday 8:15am on Tuesday October 23. This is a long review, but if you don't have time to read it, the review title says it all.
Before arriving at the hotel, I called, as I frequently do, to request that I have foam (or non feather) pillows available for my room, and was assured that this was not a problem. When I cheeked in and inquired I was told that they would send them up. At that point, I dropped my bags in the room and went down to the bar / restaurant to have a light meal. (Room Service ended at 11pm) At that point I realized that the front desk failed to give me my credit card back and had to go ask for it. After waiting for 5 minutes for someone to come to the front desk, they searched for it for about 10 minutes and finally, I found it myself in the credit card imprint machine. At bout 11:45pm, I went back to my room to find that none of the pillows were delivered. I called the front desk ands spoke with a rep that had difficulty speaking reasonably clear English. He said that he was trying to find housekeeping, but they were not returning his calls. So much for the Doubletree care line! At 12:30am, I called again, and was told that housekeeping left and that there was nobody that could help. I asked to speak with the manager, but was told there was no manager on duty. The front desk clerk Patrick said that he did not know how to find any pillows, and I am honestly not sure he understood what foam or non feather pillows meant. At 1am, I called again, let the phone ring over 20 times, an finally got Patrick to pick up. He promptly told me he was not sure how to find them and was not going to look. I asked to have the general manager call me around 9am the next morning, leaving my cell phone number.
I was unable to make a big production with the manager when at the property, as I was traveling with a valued customer. That evening, around 7pm, I returned to my room to find that one pillow had had been left in my room, and it had makeup stains on it. I called down to talk to the manager, who was not in, and the front desk refused to call him. He never returned my call to my room or to my cell phone as requested. Then, to top off the end of a mediocre stay, at 8:15am, housekeeping knocked on my room door (that had a do not disturb sign on it) and asked "you check out?" - Lets see, do not disturb and morning hours. Very unprofessional. When I asked for the manager again, I was told that he was unviable, which seems to be a theme at this sub par location.
To highlight some other problems, I had dirty towels in my room on day 1, there was obvious hair in the bathtub, cookie crumbs on the floor, the lamp at the bedside did not work, and the balcony door was not locked. Given I was on the Executive Floor, the room I got was the size of a postage stamp, and the bathroom was even smaller. The sink did not have any space to even set my toiletry bag.
I think the general failure of the housekeeping staff, really outlines the lack of concern on the part of the general manager as well as the staff at the location. I understand that problems happen, but when the manager simply does not care enough to return a call to there is a grave failure in the process.
Usually, I can be rather picky given how much time I spend on the road, but the majority of my stays get around 3 or 4. I could not in good faith give this hotel more than a 1. I ended up staying an additional night in CA and moved to the Hilton at LAX airport for a much nicer stay.
