Prior to our stay, the emails with Larry Smyth (Owner) were excellent - concise and honest. They bode well for our visit there. The vineyards/ranch lands are absolutely beautiful...about 25 acres worth of rolling hills with beautifully manicured vines and olive trees. There is the "main house" in the 'valley' (3 rooms + living room + huge dining/kitchen area). The kitchen is open to guests 24 hrs with plenty of complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and plenty of room for your own foods. All the rooms in the "main house" are beautiful and expansive. There is one suite with two separate bedrooms and a full bath between the two...excellent for two couples or a family with VERY well-behaved children...let me repeat, "well-behaved" (no couples want loud, ill-mannered children on get-aways...which are often get-aways from their own children). The two other rooms are beautifully decorated and appointed, both with jet tubs and very, very expansive.
We stayed in the "Vis-a-Vis Suite" a short distance up the hill and adjacent to the owners' residence. While it is adjacent, the entry is very private and the room well-enough apart from their living areas as to not bother them and vice versa. This suite is a kitchenette with large toaster oven, large sink, small microwave, and a portable electric double burner. It has two very nice sofas with plenty of cushy pillows on which to recline and sleep. It even has a large screen TV. Plush, terry robes await you, also. The queen mattress was comfortable; not too soft, not too hard. The views from the windows - along with the small porch (with chairs) - are 'picture postcard' beautiful! Rolling hills everywhere, cattle (far enough away to not smell), and picturesque farms in the near distance. And talk about quiet!!! Not a sound but nature at its symphonic best! The night sky was bright and starry...no competing city lights (or noise) here!!! The walk around the hilltop vineyards was exhilarating and envigorating (about 1.8 miles around, much of it uphill). We even saw wild turkeys!
The innkeeper, Lee Anne, was away on a family emergency so Larry and his assistant, Joe Farley (Lee Anne's husband), were responsible for everything during our three night stay (plus three other couples)...including breakfast. While Lee Anne prepared three morning's worth of breakfast ahead of time, the guys did a great job of cooking and presenting the foods on time and with great hospitality. The breakfast was just right...not too much or too little. Quality juices, teas, coffee, jams, etc. Way to go, guys!!!
Also, there is Larry's expansive carriage collection in a large barn next door to the 'main house'. Wow!!! All kinds of beautiful carriages with period costume on the seats. Amazing!!!
Carriage Vineyards B&B has to be the most reasonably priced inn near Paso Robles. It's east of the 101, but we didn't notice the 10 minute drive into PR and points west and north because of the beautiful countryside. Larry offers nice discounts for internet booking along with 2nd and 3rd night discounts. Larry and Joe are just regular guys; no pretentions here! If you want snooty and sophisticated, then pay the $300/night+ elsewhere!
If you want to go to the beach, the beaches in either Cayucos and Cambria are only about 45 minutes away on Hwy 46. Morro Bay is also only about 45 minutes away on Hwy 41. The coastline is spectacular there. Hearst Castle is only about 60 minutes distance from the inn. That is a 'must-see' also!
An added, unexpected bonus was a complimentary bottle of 'F/S' (brand) Zinfandel wine in our suite. We expected it to be a bottle of cute, sub-par wine but, my, were we wrong!!! It was a very nice PR Zin. Joe Farley is the "F" in F/S and the Winemaker. We went to the tasting room just off the 101 in PR and were further surprised by the Pinot Noir, Mourvedre, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice wines, Joe!!!
We will DEFINITELY be back to Carriage Vineyards B&B! Hopefully, soon!!! I miss being there already, only a day later!
