We visited during a recent vacation trip to Lake Tahoe. As we drove down the beautiful west side of Lk. Tahoe, we were looking for a nice spot to have lunch with a view of the lake, and Captain Jon's was a perfect spot to enjoy a stellar view. They have a small indoor area that is very nicely appointed, a small bar, casual, and even has a small fireplace for the winter season. The real highlight is the outdoor seating - a long patio that literally sits above the lake, offering amazing views of the lake and a perfect cool breeze. I was tempted to give them 4 stars just on the view alone, but I couldn't totally ignore some of the shortcomings. The service was OK, the actual waitress was prompt and friendly, but there was a "helper" who was basically busing tables and offering assistance, but unfortunately she was not much help. She came by once and seemed to ask if everything was ok, I requested a wine list to see what they have available by the glass - this stumped her. She eventually brought me the dinner wine list, which did not include the by glass selections, and omitted a special that was listed on a board by the door. I eventually communicated that we wanted a glass of the Sauv Blanc listed as a special - she went to the bartender, at which point he went into a long and rather loud (we could hear every word) explanation that we had to order through the server - not her. I eventually intervened (we were 2 tables away from the bar and the server was nowhere in sight) and he poured us our wine. Part of the problem was the logistics - the actual kitchen is located in the lodge, which is a separate building. This requires some travel for the servers to retrieve the food. Ultimately, everything worked out OK, but it does cause some delays.
The food was fine, we ordered typical lunch fare, and the salads were fresh and large portions. Don't expect any values - the lunches were on the high side ($15-$18), but not exorbitant given the size and the location. Overall, I would go back there at any time to enjoy the view and have drinks or small plates, but I 'm not sure it's a "destination" restaurant for dinner. I think that may cause some of the disappointment in other reviews.
If you want a great location for a beautiful view of the lake, a nice drink and a decent lunch, don't hesitate. I would have given 4 stars without the service issues...
