Ski shops staff can vary from incompetent to highly competent. We found Dave's ski rental and tuning staff HIGHLY competent. We came here ONLY to rent skis and poles. The equipment guy listened to our needs, our skill level, etc., asked one or two questions, and then made two recommendations; we chose one (Volkyl skis). The skis had sharp edges and excellent bases, which we found we needed as the conditions President's week were frozen groomers that corned up during the 60s daytime temps). They offered better quality poles than we expected. After four days of skiing, we found the skis were really excellent and performed great!
Two other shops in town offered better prices; one shop offered four or five-year old equipment, another shop offered nothing as everything was 'sold out'. You'll pay a little more at Dave's but we think you'll get more. Another shop's rental guy seemed almost fresh out of high school...a little unskilled, friendly, but could offer NO comments or recommendations about the skis they had available.
In terms of ski tuning, one of us had a pair of really terribly beaten-up mogul skis that were skied on 60 days or more and never saw a tune up. Dave's ski tuning guy downstairs offered information, knowledge and recommendations. The mogul-ski owner chose a limited tune (edges and base repair) and found his tuned skis' performance far improved the next day.
The downtown location (next to a coffee shop) was small and compact; well stocked with gear considering its size. We cannot offer comments in regards to clothing, etc.
We award 4-stars because there was GOOD rental equipment here. A tad pricey, but still reasonable. Strongly recommended.
