I was eagerly anticipating our 1 night stay at the Sunnyside Resort; however, I did end up being a bit disappointed.

There are definite pros: It is a FANTASTIC location - right on the lake with stunning views. The food on the deck was good (we had a late lunch after checking in). The room was comfortable, although not nice as I expected it would be after reading many reviews (online and books).

But there are cons: Our room overlooked the patio, which is great for lake views, but stinks - literally and figuratively. It was loud with all the restaurant guests going in and out to eat. And the fumes from french fries and other fried foods wafted up right onto our deck. Yuck. The deck - while scenic and the food good - is so cram-packed, I felt like I was having dinner with the people on our left and our right.

For the price, I don't think I would stay there again, but I'm glad I did once for the experience. The sunrise from our balcony was beautiful and peaceful - the highlight of the stay.

We spent two nights at Sunnyside Lodge this past week, taking advantage of the mid-week special ($250 total). Our room, #40, was a bit too near the road, but traffic noise eased off by bedtime. The room was quite large, with a huge stone fireplace, but also a bit dark. The king-sized bed felt wonderfully soft until we actually settled into it, when we discovered that if one person moved, the mattress rocked up and down like a waterbed. The bathroom was also large, with beautiful slate flooring, and equipped for the disabled.

The continental breakfast served in the upstairs nook was adequate;, with house-baked pastries, cereal, bagels, orange juice, and fresh fruit. Even with a knee problem I was able to climb slowly up the 2 sets of stairs, having known in advance that there was no elevator. I found that odd, however, as the rest of the lodge is quite handicap-friendly, but the manager offered to bring tea and breakfast to our room if we wished. However, there is a long bar in front of the downstairs (small) lounge, and one wonders why breakfast could not be served there. One nit-pick: the web site says “afternoon tea,” but it’s really just tea and cookies. Someone from Britain would be disappointed.

We ate in the dining-room-with-a-view both nights, as the midweek special included dinner. We were told on check-in that we would get a $60 credit toward dinner, although the web site said that dinner was included in the package. I don’t know how two people could have dinners both nights for a total of just $60, given the prices in the dining room. Our meals were excellent, though, especially the prosciutto-wrapped scallop appetizer and a prawn and scallop couscous that was Michelin-class. Service was good, and the dining-room manager was outstanding.

The lodge's location is excellent, away from the noise and activity on the other side of Tahoe City. In the fall it is beautifully calm and quiet, and the likeside setting is lovely.

Sunnyside is a wonderful upscale full service resort right on the shore of Lake Tahoe. It's just a couple miles south of Tahoe City, so not in the middle of busy tourist traffic. There are great walking and bike trails nearby. Rooms are very nicely appointed, spacious, clean, and have great balconies on second floor units for views of the lake. Continental breakfast and afternoon tea are included and are quite ample. The front desk staff were all friendly and helpful, making our reservations for dinners and boat cruises. The spectacular outdoor dining room had excellent food. We ate there two nights in a row because it was so good! One minor complaint was a lot of housekeeping and restaurant worker noise outside our balcony in the mornings. I think it was over a delivery area, so trucks and delivery carts were noisy there. It's such a perfect setting for enjoying the sights of Lake Tahoe and more classy than some of the more crowded tourist areas. Very highly recommended!!

Great lodge/hotel right on Lake Tahoe! We spent two nights there and had dinner on the deck the first night - the food was great but the nicest thing about the lodge and the restaurant is the setting! Book dinner on the deck - the food is good and the views fab! Though Sunnyside is pricey (two nights usd 500), the prices were similar to other accomodation around Lake Tahoe. Well worth a visit!!

I've always loved the Sunnyside deck, having stayed in cabins on the West Shore for 10 years, and so was eagerly anticipating the treat of spending the night in the hotel. What a disappointment! For $250/night, one just expects more. The room was fine, but the street noise was noticeable, there is no guest parking, being a guest helps not a lick in getting a table for dinner....and it is clear that the staff just does not care--in fact, the check in lady was just plain rude. Seeing the cash cow that is the restaurant I don't blame them for ignoring the hotel; but we felt gross after stayed there. My advice is that, if you want a lovely time in Tahoe, stay someplace else and maybe visit the Sunnyside for a dinner if you are in the mood for a loud party experience.
