We were looking for a place that wasn't too far from home, too spendy and a place we had never been to before. . . that criteria eliminated a lot! I'm not sure how found Hotel Sutter, but am glad we did!
After a quick two hour, very scenic drive, we arrived right in the middle of their dinner rush, so check in was a little scattered but that's OK. Part of the charm of this place is that it isn't a Marriott with a staff of 500. Our third floor room was charming and cozy. They did a nice job on the remodel, striking a good balance by adding some modern amenities while keeping the look historic look of the property, which was built in 1858. The large, light bathroom was very "restoration hardware"looking. And I love it when you can open the window in a hotel room.
We went downstairs and had dinner in front of the big windows. . the crowd had thinned out by the time we got there, and we practically had the place to ourselves-but they didn't rush us. Service was so friendly and personable. We had the braised short ribs and some soup and a really yummy cocktail. Everything was delicious. It was really quiet and romantic, but it was getting late and we figured we should get out of there and let the servers get on with their Friday night.
We went down to the Cellar and it was ALIVE!! How had we just been upstairs, it was so peaceful and no one there and just below us was a band and a party! it was great to not have to worry about driving anywhere and we had a blast here. We left our credit card at the bar and the security dude brought it to our room the next morning (before we even knew it was missing) Another plus of the small staff!
The next day we wandered around the little town, had coffee and quiche at Caffeines (using the vouchers they gave us at the hotel). Later we decided to go to one of the tasting rooms. The first one we went to was super crowded. . . no one greeted us or even made eye contact so after 5 minutes we split. We kept walking until we stumbled upon Baiocchi Wines. What a find. The wines are delicious, the two guys who were pouring were stepping in for the owners who were on vacation, and we had so much fun with them we ended up buying a couple of bottles AND joining their club (take THAT place that ignored us!). Then we did a little shopping along the cute main street. . skipped dinner and eventually ended up back in the cellar which was hopping again. Everyone in this town is so dang friendly and happy!!
We really liked the Hotel Sutter and had a really great weekend here and look forward to returning! It was quiet and cozy but also a ton of fun. A perfect mix!
