“Beautiful and Calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2011

Beautiful, calm and not at all the typical cutesy bed and breakfast. Hanford House is warm and welcoming, without the cloying "Victoriana" that seems to permeate all other bed and breakfasts in gold country. The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, with great bathrooms. Breakfast was fabulous, from the wonderful coffee to the delicious homemade blueberry pancakes and sausages. Our hosts were welcoming and friendly, offering insight into the area and lots of interesting information. Be sure to take advantage of the free bikes to tour Sutter Creek in a leisurely manner. Free wi-fi, DVDs, books. The Hanford House is a short stroll to all of Sutter Creek. The BEST place in gold country, bar NONE. There is a very good spa just a few steps from the hotel, where a 1 hour massage is only $60.

This hotel is walking (stumbling) distance from the best that Sutter Creek has to offer. Stayed here last year during Valentine's day and am thinking about going back this year to start a tradition. We loved the new "modern" rooms with heated floors and separation from the main building. My wife who is an urbanite to be sure, was impressed and wants to go back with our newborn to 'country-fy' our daughter. Looking forward to a long relationship with this B&B for years to come. Only thing I would request is space heaters out in the courtyard so I could enjoy a glass of wine at night without freezing my tail off, but that is obviously a city-lubber necessity and may not fit the decor, but here's to the Hannford House for shining among the other hotels in town. Its the first B&B you'll see on your way into town and its the first stop you should make to settle in because you won't find any better.

Had a wonderful two night stay and great breakfast at the Hanford House. The new owners have made many improvements since the last time we were there. It is walking distance to the downtown shops and restaurants and you could spend days visiting all the wineries in the area.

We spent a delightful New Year's weekend at the Hanford House Inn in Sutter Creek, in spite of some unusually blustering winter weather. My husband and I took two of the newer cottage suites in order to accommodate our family party, including my parents, our two-year-old daughter, and ourselves. The cottage suite rooms were decorated with taste and sophistication, and had all of the amenities that we look for on a luxury getaway to the wine country (flat-screen televisions, jacuzzi tubs, heated bathroom floors), but at significantly lower prices than we've encountered in more heavily-trafficked wine country areas (i.e., Napa/Sonoma). As other reviewers have noted, the innkeepers pay a lot of attention to the small details that really matter (plentiful strong coffee, delicious multi-course breakfasts, extra conveniences in the bathrooms, free strong wi-fi, baked treats in the main house). The property is located just off of the historic main street of the town, and thus preserves convenience without sacrificing privacy. Overall, the inn aims at romantic charm while still being family friendly-- the innkeepers were very gracious in accommodating the needs of our small child, while the adults in the family found it a a relaxing place to unwind.

Centrally located. It is in Amador wine country. Delightful B & B. Room was spacious, quiet, clean, & the bed & pillows oh so comfy. Robert & Athena are perfect hosts. Had great conversations with Robert, he is very interesting to talk to. Athena's breakfasts are delicious & the presentation beautiful, the best we have had in any B & B we've stayed. Athena's Eggs Benedict were awesome. Also every morning before breakfast delicious freshly made scones are left outside you door. We especially liked the lemon scones. Wine & cheese are served every evening @ 5:00 PM. I was not feeling well the second day but the bed was so comfortable that it was wonderful to be able to take a nap in the afternoon in peace & quiet . I felt better by the next morning. This was our first visit and we couldn't have been happier with our choice & plan to go there again.

My husband and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary at Hanford House's new 4th cottage- what a treat! Innkeepers are attentive and characteristically charming, without any of the overbearing or annoying qualities that we've all (unfortunately) experienced at b&b's. Breakfasts are delicious and satisfying and the wine and cheese hour was charming and refreshing. We went to the spa right next door for massages (wonderful), dinner a short drive away (delicious), and multiple bike rides using the complimentary bikes. Loved the scones and coffee delivered with the newspaper, as well.

The room itself was very comfortable. We loved the hot tub for two on the patio, the claw foot tub, the roomy shower, the attention to detail in the room itself (lighting, floors, nice sheets, etc).

All in all, a great stay and we would love to return!

I found this wonderful inn online. We were welcomed by the owner and shown to a beautiful room in the recently redone cottage. Each room had its own porch for watching the world go by. It was quaint and homey, but had all the amenities of a modern hotel. It even had it's own fireplace. It had a huge bathroon with heated floors. The shower had a rain shower head. The bed was a tempurpedic! It was wonderful. It was the best sleep of our trip. Each morning they delivered a tray with hot coffee and fresh scones to your door. It was a lovely way to start the day. The breakfasts were wonderful. I have a wheat allergy, which I made them aware of when we made the reservation. This was not a problem and all the recipes were adapted for my needs. Everything was fresh and locally sourced, including the eggs which came from their chickens in the back. Bob gave us great recommendations for wineries to visit. Do not miss Convergence and Jeff Runquist. He also made great restaurant suggestions. Do not miss Taste in Plymouth. Outstanding! This inn is within walking distance of the town. There is a lot of shopping and a couple of pretty good restaurants.
It was a great stay.
