It has been a while since dining at the Breadfruit tree. I always favor independent restaurants and Breadfruit tree has always been a local favorite if mine. First of all Breadfruit is located on the fringes of Stockton at Paradise Pt. where there is a large public dock. Cabin cruisers, houseboats, ski boats, and avid anglers all populate this marina in the Spring-Summer.
Reggae music and colorful handpainted walls of the Breadfruit tree get me in in the mood for Jamaican food! I tried their Jamaican punch, rather sweet, and heavy on the rum...whoa! The owner/chef, Louis, is a delightful guy and offers an ever changing daily menu.
Today I tried the sweet chili fish, $16 and my wife was delighted with her Roti with shrimp. My fish dish had a Basi fish filet with the sweet chili sauce over basmati rice. Very nice balance to the dish and the rice a nice base to the plate.
The Roti plate basically is a very soft flat bread served with a slightly spicy curry sauce with meat and potatoes. My wife chose the prawn version over the beef or chicken choice and was delighted with her food.
Although the menu is limited, the Breadfruit tree is a good restaurant to try out. In the summer, reservations is a good idea since seating is limited. The few outdoor tables are perfect to watch the sunset set over the delta.
