“Not our normal style”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2009

Having booked this motel some time ago, certainly before the April 09 review below, we were somewhat surprised and disappointed on our arrival at the motel. It certainly didn't look like the photos on the website and we thought that we'd made a big mistake.

The room was just about big enough to accommodate the bed but we would have been better off leaving our luggage in the car to make the room feel a little more spacious. The bathroom was small but the shower cubicle appeared to have a recent overhaul and was spacious with good water pressure - definitely no complaints on that.

The a/c unit was built into the bathroom window and so if you wanted it on then you had to leave the bathroom door open ... but it was effective and not too noisy.

We didn't try the complimentary breakfast that was supplied (outside under a tent like construction).

At $65, including tax, I suppose I shouldn't complain but we just weren't comfortable ... perhaps that says more about us than it does about the property. I could recommend this place so long as you book it with your eyes open to it's true nature ... however the website paints a distorted view of the surroundings and features and therefore I can not.

We read the reviews and decided to give it a go and stay just one night - it sounded intriguing but after arriving at the motel we could hardly wait to leave again. Decrepit and dilapidated. It wasn't dirty, just awful and we certainly didn't feel at all comfortable there and at $75,-- comparatively overpriced. We booked a room with a kitchenette and this is what we expected to find. What we got was a floor-level microwave and a built-in kitchen (presumably built in in the 30s !!) which we preferred not to put to the test. There were no pots or pans to cook with anyway. The room was small and the bathroom tiny. The Californian tourist agency rated the room at up to $195 per night - was this inspector blind !! Maybe he got the decimal point wrong - $19.50 would be much nearer.
Also the owners had been described as friendly but after having paid for the room (in advance - be warned, look at them first), we never saw them again.

Cute little place just outside of the park. We were going to camp but got snowed out, Squaw Valley Motel was an excellent alternative for the night! Friendly and helpful owners, and their 3 adorable cats roamed about the place and sat on the front stoop. Extremely affordable for any budget. Small rooms with the most basic amenities, no coffee maker, no vending machines, no ice, small TV. But it was comfortable, clean, and safe. Owner recommended a great place for dinner, the Bear Mountain Pizza and a fabulous breakfast place about 5 miles down the road, the Hummingbird Restaurant. All around pleasant experience and would definitely stay there again. If chain hotels is not your thing, give this motel a try!

This is a great place to stay just a half hour from the entrance to Kings Canyon and felt really safe and friendly. The owners were helpful and really cared about the place. The other guests were chatty and all were headed to the parks: from all over the world.

My teen daughters loved sitting outside (the weather was gorgeous) and playing with the cats. We had the local pizza on a picnic table, then ate breakfast poolside the next day.

The rooms are very tiny and no wi-fi, but they are clean, include fridge and microwave and the A/C is powerful. Overall , a great stay with lots of local flavor. We'll take this over Holiday Inn Express any day.

It was ok - the usual run-of-the-mill rural motel. It wasn't dirty and I felt they worked to keep it acceptable. The owner was nice but I found him to be a slightly opinionated and a little short on people skills. This is probably through no fault of his own. Still, it bothered me enough to write this review. In addition, they don't take AAA or offer any sort of group or senior discount. I don't see why not.

Room was very clean but also very very small and you could hear the people in the room next door as there was an interconnecting door. Owners very friendly and the cats very cute. Breakfast of coffee, toast, fruit and beautiful danishes served outside. Went to Bear Mountain Pizza for dinner (the only place close) and it was great. Good place to stay en route to Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Park but don't expect too much.

Very nice for the price. You can tell the owners had a lot of work to do when they purchased this place, but the work has paid off. An OK breakfast is included in a nice little outdoor seating area. They have comfy beds and simple rooms that function just fine. They have a pretty nice swimming pool as well. It had the feel of a bed and breakfast rather than a motel.

  • Liked — B&B type atmosphere
  • Disliked — rooms weren't terribly well insulated from each other
  • Tips/Secrets — Nice place!
