“Convenient Business Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

This is a very convenient hotel to stay if you are in a business event in the area. Walking distance to my office location. Comfortable bed, breakfast included and the manager's reception. The WIFI connection is not the greatest though. Overall a very convenient hotel to stay for short business trips and also near the airpot

This is a very convenient hotel to stay if you need to do business meeting in the that area. It was a 300 m walking distance from my business destination. If you want to spend little money (US$ 3) to go to downtown there is a nearby train-station (CALtrain). The inconvenient is to be so close to the highway and to walk near it.

I was in the 4th floor, the size of the room there was more than enough. Good shower and comfortable bed. Just the carpet had a discrete odor. I liked the big open space in the middle of the hotel too.

The breakfast was a little bit crowded in the weekend. I don't know what was happening, but a lot of kids there in this time.

We stayed one night before flying out of SFO the next morning. Definitely an older property, but with a little bit of charm, and no issues with cleanliness or anything like that. Some other reviewers had mentioned not liking the fact that there is a sink in the bedroom area over carpet, but that sink is is in addition to the bathroom sink and the bar sink, and we found it to be a nice addition.

If you are an HHonors member, be sure to include that info when making reservations, as you'll be placed on one of the top floors, and you'll get a couple of bottles of water comped.

Concerning the hotel's contracted shuttle service: We arrived about 9:15PM on a Saturday night. There was only one shuttle making the route for this property. The entire loop takes about 25 minutes, so if you just missed the shuttle, that is how long your wait might be. Good news is that the Embassy Suites South was either the first or second property stop from the airport, so it is a short ride once you are picked up. The down side is that on the route, there are about five hotel stops on the way to the airport. Allow 20 minutes from pickup at the airport until the first terminal stop at the airport.

Breakfast was fine- standard Embassy Suites. The serving line isn't the only location for the hot food- there are serving stations tucked away near the water. Also, you don't have to sit directly next to the breakfast area if you would like some peace and quiet while you dine- just cross over the bridge next to the serving area for another seating area that is more quiet.

Oveall, a nice property, and we will return if we need to spend a night near SFO airport.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Arrived SFO 5:00pm, shuttle van arrived 5:13pm, hotel approx 5:25pm. Driver helpful with two large heavy bags. There have been reports from other reviewers that there is only "one" black hotel shuttle van. In the 15 minutes I was waiting, I saw at least 5 other hotel shuttle vans that were black in color. The correct shuttle will be announced as going to "South San Francisco" and will have the Embassy Suites South San Francisco logo on the side.

Check In took about 3 minutes, and the reception staff was friendly and quickly explained the various hotel amenities. There are two elevators, and both are VERY small. Three persons with baggage will be about all you can fit. My room (604) was a 2 room Executive Suite, 1 queen bed, $207 all-in. Not exactly the most inexpensive in the area, but it was a large, quiet, corner room, and had a very large bedroom with bathroom, and an extra sink just outside the door.

Adjacent to the bedroom was a large dining area with a large round table with four chairs. The third large space was the sitting room, and it had two sofas, a workdesk, and a television. Most of the furnishings seemed a bit dated and well used, in particular, the carpet really needs to be replaced (a couple of years ago). However, the room was clean to normal hotel standards. The sitting room and bedroom have floor to cieling windows and plenty of natural light. There are also plenty of lamps and other lighting in all areas of the room.

While the rooms in this hotel are very much in need of renovation, if it were not for some of the "deal breakers" I encountered, I would have given this property 3 stars. Some major problems I found, at least for me, were: 1) The HVAC in this hotel is centrally controlled, in that the entire property is either in "heat" mode, or "cooling" mode. This means that if you like your room cool, and the hotel is in "heat" mode, you just have to live with the temperature in the room. The HVAC controls are also programmed very strangely, in that there is no way to just have the fan operating, so no air circulation is possible. This is "deal breaker" number one for me. 2) Upon arrival, there was a musty, humid, difficult to describe odor in the room, probably due to the lack of air circulation. This was "deal breaker" number two. 3) I had an early flight the next morning and really didn't feel like looking for a restaurant in the area, and I ended up ordering dinner from room service. It took about an hour to be delivered. The burger was OK, even though I ordered it medium and it came up medium rare, and the toppings were not correct. The french onion soup was watery and bland. Stay away from it. Not really bad for hotel food, although a bit pricey. Now "deal breaker" number three - the little jar of mayo on the tray was opened previously and resealed. Apparently this hotel "scavenges" condiments (and what else?) from returning room service trays and does not properly check that they have not been used. Based on this, I would not reccommend eating anything from the hotel kitchen if you have a sensitive stomach.

The room also suffers from the common problem of 110 AC power outlets either not where they need to be, or if they are, something is plugged into them. I had to unplug the clock next to the bed to charge me cellphone overnight. There is an AC outlet in the bedroom next to the television. The outlet is mounted in the wall mirror. When I plugged my laptop power supply into it, the TV shut off. I had to disconnect both, then connect my laptop power supply, then plug the tV back in so that everything would keep working. Rather strange. Also, there are only two small trash cans, one in the bathroom, the other by the work desk. Another common problem for all Hilton properties.

The bed was decent enough, and there was plenty of hot water in the morning. About 5 minutes after turning out the lights to try and get some sleep, the guest in the room above me decided to take a shower. The sound in my room was almost deafening, akin to standing next to Niagara Falls. Thankfully, once this ordeal was over with, there were no other disturbances for the rest of the night, and I had no problems getting some sleep, since there was no noise from the HVAC unit, as I had it turned off for the reason mentioned earlier. The in-room coffee was provided by one of those "single cup" coffee makers, which I absolutely hate. Pour a cup of water in, get a half cup of coffee out. This unit was no different, and the coffee it made was pretty much undrinkable.

Check out in the morning was uneventful, as was the shuttle trip to the airport, which took 40 minutes, leaving the hotel at 8:05AM on a Thursday. The Embassy Suites is the first stop both from SFO and to SFO. Going to the airport, the shuttle stops at four more hotels in the area, Hampton Inn, Larkspur Landing, Courtyard and Residence Inn before heading out on the freeway. This alone takes around 25 minutes.

Closing Comments - I did not have time to check out the breakfast in the morning, or the managers reception in the evening, so you are on your own. Finally, the Internet. There is no wired internet access at this hotel, all of it is wireless. All I can say is that the wireless access is unusable. It drops out every few minutes, and you have to reconnect. While this hotel may be adequate for some guests, I will not be returning again due to the three "dealbreakers" discussed earlier. I ended up giving this property two stars based on the overall property condition and services and conditons which are important to me, but YMMV. Based on reviews of other hotel properties in the SFO airport area, it seems that all of them have some issues as well. It might be best to just stay in downtown San Francisco next time, after all, it's not that long of a ride to SFO if the traffic cooperates.

Room tips: try and get a corner room, they are tucked away from the open atrium and are quieter.

I highly recommend this hotel, they are known for their great breakfast - and its outstanding at this location. Their coffee / espresso etc maker machine is top notch, omelette made to order are superb, and the rooms are suites - with couch, fridge, and amazing. Comfortable beds and the works. That says a lot as the local Marriott and others are not as nice or comfortable, and breakfast is $30-50 for less than what you get here included.

Room Tip: ask for west facing, good light etc. 729 is a great one for example. high enough, west facing, etc.
