We stayed at The Artists' Inn for several weeks in May '04. A lovely English-American couple took over management early in our stay. Location is excellent - a secluded, leafy residential side street only minutes' walk to South Pasadena shops and restaurants. The area is a pleasure to explore on foot. Our room was the Degas Suite, in the Cottage behind the main house - the best room overall. Although light on storage space for long stays, it has a poster bed, jacuzzi, bidet, double vanity bench, dressing table, writing desk, separate lounge area, gas fireplace, mini fridge and tv. Decorated in a light, feminine style, it has its own entrance, and windows looking out to the quiet street and its own rose garden. Complimentary bottled water, port wine, mints and chocolates are nice touches each evening. Afternoon tea is also served in the main house daily, but we were so busy sight-seeing, we never made it. Breakfast is included and is served in the front room of the main house [which is a beautiful pale yellow corner establishment with lovely rose garden]. The food is fresh, homemade and absolutely divine, ranging from bacon and eggs to souffles and omelettes to pancakes. Toast, muffins, yoghurt, cereal, fruit, juices, teas and coffees are available on the side. Off-street parking is available, but management got us a parking permit from the local council [no cost to us] so we could park on the street right outside our door. Rooms in the main house are just as lovely, although smaller than the Degas Suite. Must-see local attractions are JPL, Norton Simon Museum, Caltech, Huntington Gardens and Old Town Pasadena. This place is only a short drive from LA, but a world away. The Artists' Inn also has its own website, with pictures and descriptions of the rooms and amenities. It was like home to us, we loved it - highly recommended.

“Charming B&B in a quaint metropolis”

Artists' Inn and Cottage Bed and Breakfast

July 2004 --
This charming yellow-shingled inn is located in a residential neighborhood in the quaint by metropolitan area of South Pasadena. Within walking distance of the Gold Line Metrolink, and also to several good restaurants (one of which, FIREFLY, has garnered several awards and is highly recommended), this is a welcome retreat for frequent travelers who are tired of The Doubletree, yet want easy access to good dining and the train which goes straight to downtown LA.

The rooms are decorated with artistic themes. "Degas" "Gaugin," "Expressionist" are in a separate cottage and have jacuzzi tubs. The other rooms are wonderfully decorated in the big house, and have all the nooks and small sitting areas you'd expect to find in a B&B. In the backyard is a large wall that has been painted to look like George Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."

The breakfast is excellent, perhaps the best I've had in my many travels of frequenting B&B's. The new innkeepers are British, and have a few plans for repainting and general TLC and they are incredibly kind, and gregarious.

The room was very clean and whimsically decorated. All the rooms are air conditioned, and our room not only had a jacuzzi, but a gas fireplace and a four-poster bed, tv, sitting room, and a verandah.

I'd highly recommend this B&B. The Firefly Cafe is a wonderfully romantic place to dine, and the entire family runs the operation. The food is imaginative and not over the top.

Bugs? I saw no bugs.

The inn was quite pretty and charming. The breakfasts were delicious. But some bugs bit me all over my legs and stomach and back. I told the owner. She said that I must have picked up some bugs from walking through the grass or maybe the bugs were in my car! Two months later I still have scars from where the bugs bit me. Maybe it was a spider. I stayed there in March, so it was odd that I got so many bites-maybe 25 bites.

Management Response

I'm surprised that TripAdvisor doesn't protect its own reputation by allowing service industry targets of a review like this to respond before it is posted! Some facts: This report dates back to March last year, and no one has complained about bugs in any of our ten rooms before or since. We take all guest complaints very seriously, especially those that even hint at an ongoing problem that might be hazardous to the health of our clientele. We stripped the room in question down to the floorboards and could not find a single bug, dead or alive. The complaining guest could not produce any proof either, other than pointing to bites that could easily have been suffered somewhere outside of our meticulously clean (and bug-free) premises. In the service industry, we're vulnerable to damaging complaints put forward without proof. This one of those!
