“Beautiful historic hotel with great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2011

We spent three nights at Gunn House and absolutely loved it. It has so much character and great staff. It's a beautiful, historic building and the rooms are lovely. The breakfast room is surreal. One of the employees, Lois, has worked there for 40 years, and still serves breakfast with a smile. Tracey is a very attentive - if busy - manager, and they go out of their way to engage you in conversation.

The breakfasts are wonderful (but not for the calory-counters).

We loved our stay, and would happily stay again and again.

Was being a companion whilst husband was on business. Our first impression was that we had annoyed the person with Blue or Purple hair when we checked in on Sunday night around 6.We stayed for 5 nights so I have lots of experience! The room we booked was supposed to be their largest king, at $100 a night. The room we got was really small with lights shining in all night from their lights on the porch. Very skimpy window coverings. We were able to fix this ourselves by buying a cheap towel to cover the window in the door. The noise from traffic was constant and horrendous. Being a person in my 60's I never did breakfast as it was up two very steep flights of stairs. The bed was very good and the room was cleaned very well. The TV was really nice Plasma but there is hardly any Internet connection at best it was very low. I was to occupy myself with work on the computer but this was impossible. Next time we are in town we will be back at the Best Western. I won't be able to walk to places but will have Internet, a large room and easy access to breakfast.. Had great lunches at the Diamondback Grill down the street. Unfortunately for us the Best Western was totally booked or we would have moved.

Room Tip: Pay one night only, have other options.

Stayed one evening with my husband and two young boys. For $99 this hotel was just fine. The rooms are simple with ample room for the four of us. The downside of our stay is listed below. The upside was the delicious included breakfast. There were several fresh pastries which I was told are made every morning by the owner. There was an egg dish as well and belgian waffles. This is not your ordinary continental breakfast and would definitely put you out a little at a nice bakery. The young who checked us in didnt know much of local restaurants but I am sure the owners would. They seemed to be engaging with some folks I saw during breakfast and the owner did apologize for the noise I mention below.

The location is on Main Street which is convenient if you want to walk right into town. However, this main street is not quiet. In fact it is busy, which means cars whizzing by on the street (front) side of the hotel. The fact that our room was on the street side was a problem once it was time to sleep. After a long day with the kids we all crashed out at 10 p.m. The kids slept fine, but my husband and I woke up several times during the next couple hours. This was due to the loud sounds eminating from the restaurant/bar across the street. Even though we were on the second floor, it sounded like the folks in the bar were right below us. It progressed from upbeat revelry to nasty angry words being exchanged as people were kicked out of the bar. The drama of the patrons was right out of a reality show. The bar noise finally seized around 1 a.m. and was replaced by cars whizzing by. Now, this was a Saturday night and in fact, the owner did tell me the next day that this bar had just started staying open past 10 p.m. So maybe this will change in the future. At any rate, if you want a quieter room then request a room on the back of the hotel. (although you wont have much to look at)

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Although we much prefer our guests to be 100% satisfied with their stay, I appreciate your concerns and comments on the noise the night you were here. Our live in manager was aware of the problem and did notify the authorities of the noise as well as the proprietor of the establishment during the disturbance and stayed apprised of the events during the hour-long situation.

We can honestly say incidences such as this are a rare occurrence and since your stay, we are working with the proprietor in ensuring this does not happen again. Please accept our apology and on behalf of the business proprietor also.

We are very happy you and your family enjoyed our breakfast. We take great pride in providing a delectable surprise for our guests.

I also noted on your review that one of our desk clerks did not sufficiently assist you in choosing a restaurant. Once again we apologize. Our expectation is that all our staff be helpful in every way possible with our guests needs and questions. I will personally work with the desk to ensure the next visit; we give you, as much information as you feel is helpful.

Lastly, I hope you will return to our hotel on your next visit to the area. We have a selection of rooms, and the rooms on the 3 rd floor in the back have a lovely covered courtyard just outside the guest rooms that overlooks the pool. It is quite spacious as are the 3 rd floor guest rooms, and a great gathering place for families.

We found Gunn House onTrip Advisor - fantastic! They have gone out of their way to help us as we dealt with a health crisis - nice staff gave us early coffee and delicious homemade coffee cakes with fresh berries every morning to get us on our way. They helped us find good local places to eat (Diamonbacks) and our rooms were clean, with comfortable beds. Thank you!

I stayed here with my wife and in-laws while traveling up HWY 49. We were here to check out the California gold country. We didn't have reservations, but the friendly staff was very accommodating. We stayed in Room 23, which was a two queen room. Even though we were 4 people to the room; we didnt feel cramped. The place was clean and everything worked great. I was amazed since this hotel was built in 1850! In the morning, they had breakfast setup in the parlor. It was amazing, all kids of great stuff like homemade waffles, Quiches, pastries, coffee, juices, etc. Again ,the decor is late 1800's, early 1900's which made our stay feel like we were in the past. I would highly recommend this Hotel to my friends and family traveling in the area. room was around $130. great restaurants around too. try the BBQ place across the street.

A complete contrast to the chain hotels we had stayed in for the previous 3 weeks. The golfing theme of the bedroom was a complete novelty. The staff could not do enough for us.
Highly recommended if you want something a little different.

This is an adorable place. The rooms capture the Victorian areain the most precious way. We fell absolutely in love with it. Breakfast was free and rich with home made delicious dishes that were prepared by tge staff that morning. Breakfast Service was excellent!

The only two things I found needing improvements (and hence the 4 star) were that the room walls needed touch up paint) and the bath tub could have been more thoroughly cleaned.

Overall - we can't wait to be back

Thank you so much for reviewing your stay with us. Please know that we rely on our guests feedback so that we may continue to provide an exceptional guest experience as well as improve on areas we may have overlooked.

We are sorry to hear that your shower/tub was not as clean as you expected it to be. We certainly will look into this and use your review as a training tool for our housekeeping staff and room inspectors.

Also, being a historic property, we realize that our rooms need 'touch up's on a consistent basis. This is an ongoing process that we take seriously and lovingly with our Inn. I am sure during your next visit with us, you will see an improvement as we have focused this winter on painting.

Once again, thank you for your review and we look forward to your staying with us again.
