“Gunn House Hotel Exceeds Expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2011

I stayed here with my wife and in-laws while traveling up HWY 49. We were here to check out the California gold country. We didn't have reservations, but the friendly staff was very accommodating. We stayed in Room 23, which was a two queen room. Even though we were 4 people to the room; we didnt feel cramped. The place was clean and everything worked great. I was amazed since this hotel was built in 1850! In the morning, they had breakfast setup in the parlor. It was amazing, all kids of great stuff like homemade waffles, Quiches, pastries, coffee, juices, etc. Again ,the decor is late 1800's, early 1900's which made our stay feel like we were in the past. I would highly recommend this Hotel to my friends and family traveling in the area. room was around $130. great restaurants around too. try the BBQ place across the street.

A complete contrast to the chain hotels we had stayed in for the previous 3 weeks. The golfing theme of the bedroom was a complete novelty. The staff could not do enough for us.
Highly recommended if you want something a little different.

This is an adorable place. The rooms capture the Victorian areain the most precious way. We fell absolutely in love with it. Breakfast was free and rich with home made delicious dishes that were prepared by tge staff that morning. Breakfast Service was excellent!

The only two things I found needing improvements (and hence the 4 star) were that the room walls needed touch up paint) and the bath tub could have been more thoroughly cleaned.

Overall - we can't wait to be back

Thank you so much for reviewing your stay with us. Please know that we rely on our guests feedback so that we may continue to provide an exceptional guest experience as well as improve on areas we may have overlooked.

We are sorry to hear that your shower/tub was not as clean as you expected it to be. We certainly will look into this and use your review as a training tool for our housekeeping staff and room inspectors.

Also, being a historic property, we realize that our rooms need 'touch up's on a consistent basis. This is an ongoing process that we take seriously and lovingly with our Inn. I am sure during your next visit with us, you will see an improvement as we have focused this winter on painting.

Once again, thank you for your review and we look forward to your staying with us again.

I was searching for a place to stay in Sonora and found the Gunn House. I can't say enough positive things about this place. I love old historical hotels and this one is a gem. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is wonderful. For what you are getting their rates are reasonable. I've already booked my room for this year.

Very clean and well kept hotel that felt more like a Bed & Breakfast. The breakfast each morning was fantastic (much better than your normal continental breakfast) and our young kids enjoyed it as well. Good location within walking distance to many downtown stores and restaurants. Just a short drive to highway 108 and skiing/sledding is only 20-30 minutes up the highway. Would defnitely stay here again.

Spent one night at the Gunn House. King room and Deluxe King room were both really nice. Lots of room, good furnishings, huge bathrooms, TVs, comfortable beds, everything you could want. Staff and owner friendly. Absolutely great, free breakfast. Great place to stay in Sonora. Can't wait to go back.

We read the reviews on this hotel so decided we'd splurge and try it. As others said, the breakfast was very nice, although a little protein other than cheese in the egg casserole would be nice. We found the hotel staff and owner to be very cordial. The rooms are very cute, and the bears on the beds add a nice touch.

There were two things we felt could be improved. 1) There's no coffee in the rooms. We both prefer to have our coffee while getting dressed in the morning, instead of having to get dressed and ready to go and then going to get coffee in the breakfast room. This isn't a huge problem of course, only an inconvenience. 2) The drapes and blinds on the windows are very thin. Not only did the sun wake me up in the morning, but the porch / hall lights outside of the rooms that are left on all night kept waking me up during the night as well. I am somewhat sensitive to the light so for me this was a big problem. For those with no sensitivity to light while sleeping this won't be an issue.

Other than these two things we enjoyed our stay very much. We probably would never splurge on this place again, but for this one time it was nice and enjoyable.

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay at the Gunn House. We appreciate input from our guests so that we may continue to improve our guest experience. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay overall.
As our hotel is historic and as we strive to provide an old fashioned, home like feeling with a step back in time ambiance for our guests, we have chosen to provide a guest experience similar to that of having family stay at our home. Although we are very popular, we understand this is not for everyone. Each room at the Gunn House is unique and you apparently were in a room that the morning sun greets. Some people love this. We do have rooms in the courtyard or in the back of the hotel where this is not the issue. We have discussed in room coffee makers but feel it would take away from our 'just like home' feeling. Coffee is usually available in the Parlor by 6:30am and we welcome our guests to get coffee to take back to their rooms. We do change our food options each day for breakfast.
Perhaps you will try us again someday. Please give us a call directly if you would like to stay with us. We would be happy to accommodate your needs.
