“Outstanding food, prices and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2011

I have been a frequent customer for several years. The restaurant is attractive and unpretentious. The service impeccable, and the simple food always delicious and impeccably prepared. Soups, sandwiches, burgers and main courses are exceptional, and prices very reasonable. Very popular with Sonoma locals for good reason.

“welcoming ,with good food at good value. Casual pleasant setting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2011

Breakaway cafe is more than a cafe. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (closed for a couple of hours in the afternoon), it has a broad menu at good value.
There are specials everyday (even at breakfast) The chef cooks fish extremely well. The fried calamari is also quite good. Their soups and salads are also delicious. From comfort food such as meatloaf and mashed potatoes or the fish tacos with a delicious unique slaw to the specials of the day which include meat/fish and potatoes/pasta/rice and a vegetable, it all tastes good!
The wine selection is limited but they do have a full bar as well and make a good margarita.
The staff is friendly and attentive.
It is a good place for informal business meetings as well as for family events. I often take out of town guests for breakfast or lunch.

“Local favorite for breakfast, lunch or dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2011

As frequent weekend visitors to Sonoma, we always make time for a Breakaway breakfast. Their delicious Huevos Rancheros are the best but all the dishes have been wonderful. Lunches and dinners are also excellent - with the Beltane Burger (grass fed local beef) at the top of my list - with the crispiest fries. A recent Saturday night we had the fish special with salsa verde which was the best we have ever had. This unassuming restaurant in a shopping center is well known by locals who love the friendly service and food. For tourists it is a little off the beaten path but very well worth the effort.

“Fabulous Food in a Comfortable Setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2011

No doubt the greatest value for the money in Sonoma. The Informal, but attractive setting will surprise you with the hight quality of food. Owned by a former, well respected chef, this casual restaurant produces consistently outstanding breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The Breakaway serves as the meeting spot for many Sonomans, who while having the choice of many places, continue to keep this one at the top of their lists. Known for the best burger in the area, it also serves excellent fish, pastas, steaks and outstanding desserts. Check with any local and you will hear the same thing.

“This is my favorite restaurant in Sonoma.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2011

Unpretentious and comfortable, The Breakaway Cafe serves some of the best meals in Sonoma county at half the price of many of the more fancy establishments.
It has a great atmosphere; in the day time for breakfast and lunch the dinning room is beautiful, friendly and spacious and filled with light, and in the evening the feeling is warm and romantic and inviting.
It's good, honest food, fresh and clean tasting. I love fish and I almost always have one of their fish specials and it's always been superb. Their chef really knows how to cook fish, crisp on the outside and soft and velvety in the center. Last week I had a very generous portion of beautiful local rock cod on a bed of creamy risotto with a blood orange reduction sauce making a delicious accent. Simple good food, perfectly cooked.
Fried calamari is one of their specialities and it's the best I've ever had, anywhere, period.
It's perfectly fried, without a trace of grease, and served with an addictive chipotle mayonnaise and lemon wedges. It goes great with a glass of their Oatmeal Stout; a perfect combo.
They have some of the very best deserts around too. Marcia, who is one of the waitresses, also makes many of the deserts, and she has a rare talent. On my last visit I had a citrus flavored pound cake, light as a feather, with a perfectly sweet/tart rhubarb and strawberry compote and a spoonful of creme fraiche. Pure heaven. She also makes the best lemon biscotti I've ever tasted. And chocolate brownies; and key lime pie and many other treats. Be sure and save room for desert. The assortment is always changing.
The staff are really friendly and nice and go out of their way to be accommodating. They seem to be really enjoying their jobs and seem happy to be there. A big reason why this place has such a nice atmosphere I bet. I've also found that the chefs are really open to making up special requests.
This really is one of the most pleasant dinning experiences to be had in the North Bay for my money.
It's a favorite with locals and with good reason.
I live over in West County near the coast, and only get over to Sonoma a few times a month, but if I lived in town I'd have dinner at the Breakaway at least several times a week, and breakfast too.
