Maya was easy to find, sitting on the outside corner of the Sonoma square. The decor was unique, one wall completely brick. The chairs were cool, carved/formed wood for the seat and surprisingly comfortable.
The chips were fine, and two different salsas were served. The green/tomatillo was ok, but the red tasted like canned tomatos and little else. We asked for something hotter, and they offered jalapeno and habanero salsa. We opted for the jalapeno. It was not too hot, and unbelievably good. Roasted flavor with lime. I couldn't get enough of the stuff.
The menu is not traditional. Don't expect a combination plate offering. My family ordered nachos, a taco plate (small chicken, pork and beef tacos), and an enchilada. The nachos were very good, and had an unusual flavor/sauce. The same sauce was in their rice as well. The enchiladas were very good, and the tacos were extremely good. The beef tacos were probably the best I've ever had.
The side dishes were unique. Cabbage salad was served instead of the traditional iceberg lettuce/tomato/onion/cilantro mess. Very good, excellent dressing. I'm pretty sure the beans were not pinto, they were much more pale; whitish, and were very good. The rice, as mentioned, had a unique flavor but not everyone at the table liked it.
The only two knocks: the table salsa (red) was poor (ask for the hotter stuff!) and the portions were small for the price. Other than that, great restaurant.
