The Sonoma Mission Inn is one of the few "full service resorts" in Wine Country, with expansive grounds, a golf course and a famous spa. This was our second visit to SMI, and we liked it even better this time than on our first visit two years ago. Fairmont has really done a wonderful job restoring this classic resort that was built in the 1920's. I felt that the grounds, the lobby, and the other common areas were in top condition. I woke up quite early in the mornings, due to my body clock still being in a different time zone, and I enjoyed taking morning walks around the beautiful grounds---there were gorgeous flowers all around. It was cool in the mornings, and I enjoyed going into the fabulous 1920's lobby and having complimentary morning coffee and sitting by a fire while reading the newspaper.
The rooms vary pretty widely, and this can affect your experience. The Mission Suites are very popular, have large fireplaces and on open bathroom arrangement, with french doors to a patio or deck. We had a Mission Suite last visit---and our traveling companions had one this visit--pictured here. On this trip we booked a "wine country room" which was quite a bit less expensive. Our room was fairly standard, but it was very nicely furnished with attractive side pieces and nice fabrics, and had a pretty bath, so I thought it was fine. The heritage rooms, in the original 1920's wing, are another option. I booked our room through a web site that discounts the room prices from the Fairmont site. Although I requested a King bed, we got a room with 2 doubles. The front desk nicely explained that when booking through this service they will only honor the bedding request if available, and since this was a sold-out September weekend there were no more King-bedded rooms available. They offered to move us after the weekend crowds moved out. Although I was disappointed, I do not hold this against the hotel---these are the risks you take booking through a discounter. We did not use the spa but our friends traveling with us did, and they loved the spa. You frequently see people in white robes trekking across the grounds to the spa.
There are a couple of negatives to this hotel. First, the immediate neighborhood is not particularly scenic---auto repair stores and even tattoo parlors are found within a block or two. This doesn't really affect you when you're on the grounds, but you do drive through this area to get to the hotel. Second, the prices are relatively high, even for Wine Country. These two factors prevent me from giving a 5-star rating.
Another consideration in booking this hotel is that the SMI is larger than many wine country hotels---this is either a positive or negative depending on your point of view. Because it is a little larger, the grounds and common areas are, in my opinion, nicer than comparably priced small inns. However, the experience will likely not be as "personal" so this is a factor to consider. I would gladly return to the SMI.
