“Love this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

The Sonoma Mission Inn is one of those places where the longer you stay the more you love it. Is it glitzy - no. Not the right location for that. It is cozy and comfortable and casually elegant. The standard room we had was lovely. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. The grounds are beautiful, the spa is wonderful, the gym with its perfectly equipped wood floor exercise room is one of the best of any resort. Having access to this space with all of the yoga props you would want is a treat while traveling. The restaurant and the wine bar exceeded what we expected onsite. Food was unique and the service top-notch. And a fire pit! Want to relax and enjoy nature - Sonoma and the Mission Inn is the way to go - love its small town feel and attitude! Highly recommend a visit to Bear Moon Clothing on East Napa - cool clothing that your friends at home will not have!

This hotel was great. i was concerned after reading several negative reviews about service, construction etc. We had no issues whatsoever. This Fairmont is a bit different in the sense that it was once a mission so not built to be a luxury hotel like many others in the chain. it still lived up to a Fairmont reputation....just maybe a country version of a Fairmont.

Upon arrival the great valet staff had our key ready to go with no need to head to the lobby to check in. we were in the room within 5 minutes of arrival. Stayed in a wine country suite which was perfect. It was in a building at a quiet end of the property with only 8 room in the building. it had more of a resort-feel than a hotel feel. the fireplace came in handy on the cool evenings. Room was well appointed and very clean. Furnishings are not dated as some reviews have remarked. they are just more of a French Country klind of look. The lobby has completely been renovated (and no there was no construction) and the complimentary wine tasting each evening was a nice touch. Splurge on a cheese plate to go with it. We were tired of large meals and went to the lounge for drinks and appetizers one night. The wine selection by the glass is good but a bit pricey. The 'poutine' is worth getting. The complientary bottle of wine in the room was appreciated. There is not much around the hotel but there is a lot within a short driving distance. I wouldn't stay here without a rental car to get around. It is about 10 minutes of downtown Sonoma with lots of restaurant options. many wineries within a 10-minute drive as well. the hotel rooms are expensive and since we upgraded to a suite, i am not sure what the rooms are all like. i had a small issue with a charge on my bill which the front desk promptly fixed. if it hadn't been for this, i would never have needed to see the front desk for anything.

The stuff you must know: This is not in beautiful, wooded wine country and the buildings are not newly renovated. It's on the edge of a so-so neighborhood and many of the buildings could use some work.

That said, my wife and I LOVE coming here. The grounds are not huge, but peaceful and perfectly maintained. The spa is magnificent. The bathing ritual is so relaxing and the spa treatments are consistent and rejuvenating. The food is excellent and the newly decorated lobby and bar (38 degree north) are fun and great looking. There are often wine tastings in the lobby and overall the service is very good.

Room Tip: There is a big variety of rooms here. My wife and I have tried a couple of the different suites, an...

I recently stayed here on a family trip for my 30th birthday. Our experience was not particularly awful, but this location certainly does not live up to the Fairmont brand reputation or expectations. We were very dissapointed upon arriving with the location and grounds. The bathroom in the lobby felt like a public restroom. Nothing was lush or welcoming really. The lobby is modern and nice enough, but lacks any character. The building and layout felt like a pink, mission style, apartment complex. The gym was fine, I didn't visit the spa though based on my impression of the rest of the grounds. Overall we all felt like the hotel was fine if it were a 3 star hotel, but it was absolutely not worth the price they charge per room. Also, the hotel location lacks any appeal or charm. I don't believe there was a continental breakfast included and the restaurant "Big 3" felt like a diner. While the main town area of Sonoma was nice, you are better off staying in Yountville, Napa, St. Helena or Calistoga if you want more of a quaint, vineyard, scenic feel. Interesingly enough, everyone in Sonoma made it sound like everything was so far away (it's not) and discouraged any trips outside of the area. Once driving to the other parts, we understood why.... That said, the valet staff at the Fairmont Sonoma were lovely. Super friendly and helpful! Again, not a "bad" experience, but just not what we expected. Save your money for the Fairmont Heritage in San Francisco's Ghiaradelli Square, now THAT is what a Fairmont experience should feel like.

Dear M B, Thank you for choosing the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa for your special celebration and happy belated birthday. I appreciate you taking the time to write your review and I am sorry for any disappointment with our grounds and location. I am glad to read that our staff succeeded in providing the warm, engaging service that we feel is part of our culture at Fairmont. I do hope you will consider returning and enjoying the spa as well; it is 40,000 square feet with our Watsu and other pools heated by natural geothermal mineral waters, as well as our signature bathing ritual experience including Grapeseed exfoliating scrub, warm pool, Jacuzzi, eucalyptus steam room and dry sauna. Thank you again for your post. Warm regards, Guest Service Manager

Stayed here for a business/pleasure trip for 5 days. Reserved a suite and an extra room for my daughter and her fiancee as they love the wine country and the restaurants in the area. The hotel does things that a luxury hotel does to make you feel special, however, they lack some basic customer expectations that we have come to expect from a high end hotel.
The bell service and concierge was good and the check in process was painless having us into our rooms with luggage in no time. There is a nightly complimentary wine tasting that adds a touch of class.
However, the hotel is dated and therefore the rooms aren't soundproof. The small kitchenette was not equipped with any appliances or tools. very basic. Not even a trash can. The phone service in the hotel is spotty at best and the $15/day internet relatively slow. The spa that they promote is overrated and has a bad layout. The spa locker rooms are very basic but even worse they are remote from the spa on another floor that make it awkward when going to treatments, sauna, Jacuzzi, or steam.
Both rooms were scheduled for 5 days but had to have one of the rooms check out a day early and they said they would have to charge me full price for that room regardless of the reason. I cannot recommend this 70's hotel that try's to be upscale.

Dear Dave S., Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am glad you enjoyed many elements of our service and amenities. However I am sorry for any disappointments with the resort or rooms. Thank you for bringing these items to our attention. I am sorry that one of your rooms had to depart early; we do have a five day cancellation policy as we are generally not able to resell a room in that time period – I do apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you again for your feedback. Kind regards, Guest Service Manager

My husband and I stayed at Fairmont Sonoma Mission for the first time. At arrival, we were welcomed by very friendly valet staff and every time we retrieved our car, they always had nice smile on their faces. We were excited about the complimentary wine tasting at the lobby from 4:30pm-5:30pm. We paired with some selections of cheese and the server was so knowledgeable. All the concierge staff were very friendly and they know everything about Sonoma, especially various wineries. We did some homework prior to the trip, but there are so many wineries and we didn't know where to start (If you contact their concierge prior to your trip, they will send you a ton of stuff to do in Sonoma). One concierge suggested to take a tour by Platypus which chooses smaller and boutique type of wineries (I also posted my comment about the tour on this website). Next day she also suggested a few wineries that she likes and we loved them all! We had a wonderful breakfast at the golf course (a private course). We ate outside by looking at the beautiful greens and it was so peacefully quiet. I had 'Egg white omelette' and it was so yummy. We also tried Sante Restaurant for dinner. We both had 'tasting menu' paired by wine with each dish. The server and the manager were perfect companions for this beautiful and delicious course. The room was rather smaller, but it was newly renovated. The bathroom was clean and beautiful and the bed was comfy. We didn't get to try the spa, but next time for sure!

We stayed here for friends 50th birthday, so planned months in advance and all were excited! The hotel property itself including the lobby and dining area are beautiful. The rooms not so much, not worth the $600 rate for an average room, we were unable to sleep both nights. The air kicked in so loud that we kept waking up all night. Our second room had the same experience with the added sound of dishes and glasses being collected from an event. The second room ordered a fan to create white noise to be able to sleep thru the night which worked well. If you are wine tasting in Sonoma the location is great but not if you are headed the 45 min to Napa... Breakfast was slow and average, wine tasting in the lobby was nice but a bit crowded. The bell and valet staff especially were excellent. When we checked out I told the front desk about our lack of ability to sleep due to the noise of the air, he said "thank you" and will tell our engineers... Not the response I was expecting.
