The Sonoma Plaza, also known as the Square to locals is as expected in the heart of the town of Sonoma. It is a Plaza that dates back to the 1850s.
Today, there are a variety of shops, wine tasting rooms, restaurants, ice cream shops, galleries, etc. all surrounding a park with picnic tables, a rose garden, fountain, children's play area, a visitors center and even a duck pond.
From May through October, there is a Tuesday night Farmers Market that is not to be missed, complete with local farmers, prepared foods, music and entertainment and lots of friendly people. 5:30 - 8:30 pm
There is also history in the Plaza, including an old Mission.
Overall, while many people visit Sonoma it is not touristy and lots of locals frequent the Plaza most every day. But, many people miss Sonoma and continue on to the much more touristed Napa Valley (about 20 minutes away).
