“The Best of the Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2008

A wonderful inn conveniently located for the entire Santa Barbara wine country. Beautifully decorated and appointed. The description about being classic French is spot on. The room is comparable to an elegant B&B. There is no trace this was ever a budget chain motel.

Breakfast is very nice and included three types of juice. Bacon was crisp which doesn't happen often at a buffet. We didn't make it in time for the wine and cheese reception, but were immediately offered a complimentary glass of wine at check in. While we only stayed one night, this would be the place to stay for a longer visit. We toured California for a week and if logistically we could have stayed at the Hadsten House for the entire time, we would have.

We spent one night at the Hadsten House recently. My family and I thought the stay to be extremely nice. The room was decorated very tastefully and was very comfortable. A nice breakfast buffet is offered as part of the stay. The location of the hotel is within easy walking distance to the sights of Solvang. The hotel has a nice indoor pool which my daugther enjoyed. I found the staff to be both very professional and friendly. As an added touch, a hand written post card from the Hadsten House thanking us for our stay was waiting for us upon our return from California.

The Hadsten House is a great place to stay while you are in Solvang; the rooms, staff and food will not disappoint. My wife and I stayed there August 8th and 9th while visiting the local wineries (recreating the "Sidways" experience) and found the property and staff to be most accommodating and a pleasure. The property was previously a Vagabond Inn and now has been rejuvenated to a nicely decorated (modern version of French Country) and well-appointed boutique motel. Note this is a motel (albeit nice), where you drive up to your room, not a full service hotel. True, based on other reviews, the complimentary breakfast does end promptly at 10am and if it is busy (weekend) the items go fast. However, the breakfast consists of eggs, potatoes, bacon, fruit etc, not just a few muffins, and is included in the price of your stay; a daily happy hour (3 to 5) is also included. The restaurant's menu offered a wide array of choices and the food was fantastic. The rooms were well decorated (see photos) quiet and spacious. The flat-screen Tv and fireplace were nice touches. HH is an excellent property that we would highly recommend.

When we arrived in Solvang, we pulled up to the property and proceeded to check in. The front desk staff seemed to be a bit new and disorganized. It took at least fifteen minutes to check us in with the lack of competency that they had. We then went to check into our room and were disappointed to see that the room was in the corner of the hotel, under the stairwell and next
to the maids' area, We decided that the noise level between the stairs and the maids' carts was going to be an issue. We called the front desk to see if we could possibly change the room location. The manager answered the phone and stated that there were no more king rooms. We then went to the office to let them know that we would take another kind of room. So they proceeded to look in the computer for twenty minutes to try and find some solution. While waiting patiently, another couple came in to complain about their room and a family then came to check in. We tried to tell them that we would trade with the other couple, but they said that that particular room would not work for us. We also had arrived before check in time, but they told us that there were no other rooms available. They finally found one and we checked into that room for the night.
Later, we attempted to use the spa and were told by the group of people that were already in the area that it was not working.
We were also told that there was a free breakfast buffet until 10 am, so we along with quite a few others, went to the restaurant at 9:45. Upon entering, we found that the food was gone and the staff explained that they would not be making anymore. Another guest complained and that there were about 10 people in her party, so if they could at least make some more eggs and potatoes, they would be happy. Miraculously, within a couple of minutes more eggs and potatoes appeared. We also spoke to another couple who said that they had made reservations at the restaurant for the night before and when they got there, there was no staff in the restaurant. We proceeded to eat with our fingers and when we finished, the staff brought us forks and napkins.
We would have to say that there are quite a few problems with this particular hotel in the organization of it as well as lack of knowledge by the staff. For $200 plus per night, this place needs to shape up.

  • Liked — The quality of the room.
  • Disliked — The rampant incompetence.

I am very surprised to read this review. Since I was never contacted by this guest while they were staying here or givewn the opportunity to resolve their issues. The review does not state when they actually were guests but after reading the review I can only assume that the hotel was full which would account for the problem with moving the guests to another room. we do try to accomadate all guest requests and i am sorry that this request didnt go as smoothly as possible. as far as the checking in procedures, we do not have any new employees at the front desk so I can not really answer why it took so long, part of that might be due to waiting for rooms to be cleaned. there is no mention of what time the guests were trying to check in. as for the spa, there spa shuts off @ 10pm. there has never been a problem with the outside whirlpool tub. it has not been b roken or down for any reason, the fact that they "heard this from another guest is unfortunite and appearantly untrue. as for the breakfast again since no complaints were made to the desk I have no way to verify the situation and if true, we were not given the opportunity to resolve it more quickly, if all of their asssertions were true and had they taken the time to provide the hotel with their comments prior to checking out I would have been happy to have made an adjustment and most likely invted them back another time. if you are reading the response I would suggest that if you ever have a problem at a hotel, do not wait until after you leave to post a negative review. instead speak with the manager while you are still at the hotel and allow them the opportunity to resolve the issues and make you happy. complaining afterwards really solves nothing other than venting. the goal of every manager is to make the guests happy and make sure all complaints are resolved so that the guest will return. I am sorry that we were not able to do that with this guest.

My name is Chuck Byers and I am a wine, food and travel writer that came to Slovang to do a Christmas article for the magazine I write for called East of the City in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Hadsten House quickly became my next home for the 9 days that I spent there. The comfort was immediate and the service exceptional.
The Hadsten House breakfast (which was included in the stay) was something to look forward to with its bacon, scrambled eggs, sausages, home fries, fruit and Danish pastry. Coffee was always available.
The meals served during the other parts of the day looked very inviting though I was out doing my research and saw them while on the run.
I found the rooms very comfrotable and quiet. My daughter and her friend made use of the pool facilities which were kept spotlessly clean by staff. As a matter of fact, the rooms were always in mint condition whenever I returned from my work.
Management was alwyas courteous and willing to talk. They made every effort to help in any way they could.
Being within the City of Solvang and close to other communities such as Los Olivos and Santa Ynez made my stay at Hadsten House very convenient. Solvang had much to offer the visitor with its Danish architecture, tourist sites and food.
For those who like beaches and visiting Santa Barbara, 30 minutes would be all that is necessary to travel.
I would highly recommend this hotel/motel to any who visit.

  • Liked — The rooms were spacious, comfortable, very clean and quiet. Excellent television reception.

We stayed at Hadsten for our first anniversary after we were unable to book the hotel where we spent our wedding night. When I found their special including dinner and a couples massage I was no longer disappointed about the other hotel. The wine, cheese and fruit were a nice greeting upon our arrival. We enjoyed an early dinner. The baked brie appetizer was huge delicious as was the salmon carpaccio. We enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi with fireplaces and great chairs. The rooms were beautifully decorated- not a single detail neglected. The next morning's breakfast buffet was nice and the massages were wonderful. We hope to return again soon.

We had a great 7 night stay at the Hadsten House. The employees were so nice and cared about everyone. Margariet in the dining room for breakfast was very special. The breakfast was always fresh and good. The evening staff came every night to turn the bed down always happy and smiling. Solvang is a beautiful town to visit, we hope to return in the near future.
