We've been to Solvang many times for wine tasting trips with our friends, but this was for my wife's birthday. I absolutely needed a clean room, with nice amenities and courteous staff: the Hadsten House delivered on all fronts here. But as several folks have noted this is a MOTEL - - a very nice one, mind you, but still a motel: there's no one to help you with your bags to your rooms, which normally doesn't bother me, but at the price we paid (more expensive than the Fairmont we stay at in Orange County) think this should at least be an option.
Disabled travelers should be aware that there is no elevator lift here, so this could be an issue.
We asked for, and got, a second-floor room. Rooms are nicely decorated (I found the fake fireplace a little kitschy, but whatever) and beds very comfortable but a bit smaller than I would have liked; nice Sony flatscreen LCD TV with DVD player; wardrobes are large and contain a small refrigerator to put your own food/drink away to enjoy later.
I would prefer the bathroom area have a door that actually shuts/locks but that's a minor gripe. Walls are thin: late at night we had some boisterous neighbors and I could hear them slam the door open and closed and muffled voices through the walls. Luckily my wife and son were dead to the world at that time.
Agree with those who note that the AC in the bathroom area turns that into an icebox while the rest of the room stays relatively warm: management should consider installing central air throughout instead (again, at this price point I kinda expect that).
We took advantage of the happy hour and really enjoyed it: GREAT baked brie and nice big wine pours; the hotel provides two vouchers for each guest in a room.
The pool and hot tub areas looked great, but alas we didn't have enough time to try these out (next time).
Location in Solvang is really ideal: you are right in the downtown Solvang area; wineries are short drives away.
Here's what really nice about Hadsten House that other area motels do not do for guests: you get a pass that allows you and a guest into at least a dozen local wineries for FREE tastings: do a 4 or 5 tastings and you're getting up to $100 in value (avg. tasting at most area wineries cost $10/person). Sure, some of these wineries may not produce the best vino, but many have beautiful grounds (e.g. Buttonwood, Bridalwood) and are worth visiting for that reason alone.
We've stayed at other motels in the area and this one tops the bill in terms of style, amenities and staff service. Worth staying at and next time I'll try to book farther in advance to get a better rate -- they don't offer a AAA rate on weekends and in general I'd advise folks to expect to pay more on weekends at Hadsten House; seems like since "Sideways" came out that the Santa Ynez Valley just got more expensive to stay in and there's no way around this on the weekends regardless of where you stay in the area -- I'm sure as hell not paying $100+ taxes for the Buellton Days Inn!.
