“Great Place with Great People!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2005

We stayed at the Solvang Gardens Lodge over Veteran's Day weekend to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We were treated beautifully and the owners, Paul and Diana, were the ultimate hosts. We enjoyed their "Sideways" package, which included our room, a $50 voucher to the Hitching Post II Restaurant (great food and wines!), continental breakfasts, and an awesome tour of local wineries. We had the time of our lives! Paul always made us feel welcome, and he was such a pleasure to talk to. We even saw him and Diana at a Los Olivos restaurant during our weekend, and they made us feel like old friends. Our room, the Butterfly Orchid Room, was warmly decorated, always clean, and we slept like babies both nights we were there. The weather that weekend was exceptional, and we enjoyed eating our breakfasts in their gorgeous Gardens. The Lodge is within walking distance of downtown Solvang and all its' wonderful wine-tasting rooms. We highly recommend the Solvang Gardens Lodge. It's a great place of comfort, warmth, and charm. It really feels great to be treated so wonderfully. We will DEFINITELY be back as soon as possible. Thanks Paul, Diane, and Staff! You are the greatest!!!
Warmest Wishes, Denise and Karl Sampson

We recently stayed at this Motel. We were traveling on specific dates and everything else was booked that weekend. I checked their website and tripadvisor but was still totally unprepared for the low quality and kitch of the rooms given their price. It's even worse than what the "Interesting" reviewer described. Let's put it this way, if I had known the rooms would be that bad, we would have rescheduled our trip for another weekend altogether. We stayed in 2 different rooms. Both rooms were small and dimly lit, with very low ceilings and most face the parking lot or a common driveway. The decorating is a mish mash of painted paneling and clashing florals, colors and patterns that are quite unattractive. All rooms seem to have at least 2 faded and extremely dusty fake floral arrangements that are ready for the trash bin. Rooms had crank windows that didn't all lock. and Our room was dusty and the carpets/blankets were of questionable cleanliness.

Not to be completely negative. The bathrooms were very small but clean. Cute gardens but you've got to like the sound of running water because there are small fountains everywhere. We liked the location because it was away from the noise of the main drag. My husband and I rank this as one of the worst places we've ever stayed in the $100+ category. The rooms should be priced much lower for the quality.

My companion and I spent two nights at the Solvang Gardens Lodge in mid-July. It was an interesting experience, but I cannot honestly describe it as being luxurious. Here's why: The lodge is a converted motor-lodge, and lacks the polish and amenities of a true luxury inn. The staff, although reasonably friendly, seems to lack a firsthand knowledge of the finer points of the Santa Ynez Valley in terms of both cuisine and wine. The grounds are a cutesy attempt at old-world charm that just doesn't quite come off. One has the feeling at someone's sweet old grandmother has been put in charge of the landscaping and interior decorating. The initial impression is one of tackiness, but then one realizes that, given what they had to work with, the owners have done a fairly nice job with the property. The rooms do not have telephones, and although the fixtures in the bathrooms are newly renovated and clean, certain basic items such as a hairdryer are missing. The "artwork" in the suites is rather cutesy (cherub prints abound) and one had best be in touch with one's floral side if one is to feel comfortable with the decor. (Although... to be fair, this is probably true of more than 90% of Solvang's accomodations.) One caveat: The single wall-unit air conditioner labored VERY HARD to cool the room in the torid, mid-July heat, and left us just a bit too warm at certain times. All in all, I was not displeased by anything at the Lodge, and neither was I impressed. The rate of $180.00 per night (midweek) did seem a slight bit inflated for this level of accomodation. But, if you find Petersen's booked, this is probably among the best alternatives. Just don't expect much more than a clean, comfortable room (or suite) with the most basic of amenities, and you will not be disappointed.

While we just moved from California to Arizona recently, one of the last trips we took was to the town of Solvang. We had stayed at a few of the other hotels before and fine ones they were but this last time we decided to give the Solvang Gardens a try and we were not disappointed. This one-story establishment is ideal for couples looking for a nice quiet place to stay. Located on a side street (Alisal Rd) this place is a short walk from the main part of town with fine dining and shops. The garden setting is ideal and has places to sit outside and relax. The rooms are fabulous and very clean. The morning breakfast isn't fancy but Solvang is noted for great breakfasts - The Little Mermaid or Paula's Pancake House I'd suggest in town. We will make sure and come back here the next time we're in town.

My wife and I decided to stay at the Solvang Gardens Lodge after looking at various websites on the lodgings in Solvang. Their website doesn't mislead viewers like some do. It appeared to be the most like a B&B, which is what we like to stay in. It is not a B&B, but it is very quaint and has the feel of a B&B with it's cozy rooms, beautiful grounds and wonderful staff. It is not on the main road (Mission) which was nice (and much quieter), yet it was walking distance (2 blocks) to downtown. The staff was great. I dealt with Jolon and the owners, Paul and Diane, most of the time. Jolon was very helpful in setting up reservations for a wine tour and dinner. Paul and Diane are also on premises making sure everyone is taken care of and offering advice on things to do and places to go. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed with antique furnishings, new fixtures, and above average linens. At least the ones we saw were. They are still updating some I believe. It was a great 1st anniversary and we'll spend more there I'm sure.
