“My favorite place to stay in Solvang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

I highly recommend this place. The rooms are cute and comfortable and the staff is very accomodating. I only had a reservation for one night and they graciously accomodated me when I wanted to stay for two and even upgraded me for the second night to a wonderful Jr. Suite with a HUGE shower and a flower-filled private patio out front which is great for people watching and sipping morning hot chocolate. The Inn is connected to downtown so it is an easy walk all over downtown and a short drive to Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, and Buellton.

I thought this place was fantastic. We had an upstairs room with two bunk beds in a separate bedroom and two queens in the main room with a fridge, a fireplace and a sitting area. We paid just over $100 which is a STEAL!. Breakfast was nothing fancy but I we were thrilled to find this place. I would definitely stay here again. The location is excellent but Solvang is so small eveything is walking distance.

Followers of my reviews know that we have been visiting the Wine Valley Inn for over 9 years (it was originally called the Chimney Sweep). The Hotel continues to transform itself into a first rate destination in Solvang.

It started out as a very eclectic Motel, with each room different, funky furniture, funky bathrooms, but a rustic "what's in the Attic" charm. When Broughton took over, they remodeled all the rooms, completely remodeled all the bathrooms, added a beautiful lobby and sitting area, added a nice continental breakfast, added afternoon wine tasting, added Bike Rentals, added high end soaps, shampoos etc in the rooms, added nice bath towels, mats, etc, added a gym, and massage area, added some outdoor fireplaces and remodeled and expanded the breakfast area.

They increased staff, and also added value priced packages. Each room still has some of its eclectic charm, and room by room, window by window, door by door, they are slowly, but surely correcting the "sound issue", that we also experienced in a couple of the rooms. That being said, we have stayed in almost every room and Cottage at the Wine Valley Inn, and can claim the title of their longest running frequent guests! To put your mind at ease, most of the rooms are quiet and comfortable. A Couple still need "adjustments".

To date Broughton has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in upgrades and adjustments, and according to their fantastic Manager, Sandra Hallman, they will continue to do so. If you ever have a problem, ask for Sandra, tell her Big Daddy G sent you, and she will make things right!

To insure you get a quiet room, make sure you ask for one when you make your reservation. We found that as long as you do not have a room with an adjoining door (which is used to turn a couple rooms into bigger suites), you should not experience alot of noise. There are also a couple of rooms where new thicker pain windows need to be installed to eliminate pedestrian noise.

All rooms have new LCD TV's, refrigerators, safes, ironing boards, and very reasonable "honor system" snacks and beverages. The Hotel is perfectly located (away from main traffic, but a 4 minute walk to anywhere in Solvang).

We look forward to going there, and their PCPA Package continues to be one the best deals on this Planet, which includes: Two tickets to a great professional musical or play in the beautiful Solvang Outdoor Theatre- 2 short blocks from Hotel, a great bottle of wine, and continental breakfast (eggs, waffles, hash browns, yogurt, juice, coffee, bananas, oranges, cereal, sausage paddies, and toast).

We have stayed at most of the Hotels, Inn's and Motels in Solvang over the years, and Wine Valley Inn continues to be our favorite.

I wrote the following letter to the Wine Valley Inn and never received a reply email.
Hi, We very much enjoyed our weekend visit and love the hotel. It is very charming and in a very nice location and provided us with all our necessities for the weekend. We did however, have a problem with our room that we addressed at checkout and feel that she did not want to hear our complaint. We just felt the room is in the worst location. All the other rooms seems to be very quiet and maybe a little bit more private, but our room was anything but. Room 102 is just a bad location. We couldnt open any of the window curtains without people being able to completely see in, which made for a lousy time spent in the room enjoying our wine relaxing. It wouldve been nice to have the shades up and look at the cute surroundings. Also, every morning the housekeeping carts were parked outside of our windows and we were woken up to them speaking very loudly. I opened the blinds and literally there were five carts outside of our window and the ladies standing right there! We had to have our shades shut the entire time and it was loud. And that light that lights up that step at night is so bright we had to keep it covered with a pillow, the clock was wrong, and the toilet paper holder is broken and the roll kept slipping off into the trash can. Other than that, everything else was lovely, the beds comfortable and we would love to come back and visit but not stay in that room ever again.
Very disappointed the staff did not bother to respond to our complaint. I would recommend this hotel, however definitely would not recommend this room!

Room Tip: Do not allow yourself to be in room 102

Based on what I had seen online and the price I was paying I thought our room would be nicer. The Inn overall is very nice. It's in a convenient location and the complimentary breakfast was nice. But our stay was not stellar. When we first arrived we were too early to check-in; we were attending a wedding rehearsal that afternoon and just wanted to check out where the hotel was. We were told we were going to get a room with two double beds but that it was on the third floor so it would be quiet. I had made the reservation for a King Chateau room 9 months prior so I wasn't too happy but I went with it. The woman at the desk told me that the third party booking agent (in this case Priceline) doesn't communicate that info and I should have called to be sure I'd get a king room. When we returned after the rehearsal we were told by a man at the front desk that we were getting a king room on the ground floor. I thought maybe that had rearranged things for us to make sure we got a king but once I saw the room I thought differently. I was pretty sure someone else had demanded a change. It was right on the parking lot. When we walked in the first thing we saw was a dark carpet stain and badly scuffed wall. Bleh... We decided to try the "wine reception" in the lobby, which was not free as another reviewer had mentioned. It was after dark when we returned from the pre-wedding dinner. We parked in the lot and instantly noticed the stadium-bright lights shining directly into our room. Ugh. There were no drapes on the window, only some French blinds that let in a ray or neon white light that tracjed across my husband's pillow. We called the front desk and a woman came who was less than helpful. She shoved a sheet into the blinds, which promptly fell out the second she closed the door. I suggested thumb tacks since there was a deep window seat that had lots of space behind a wooden valence to fit anything at all. Like some drapes!!! She said she would "get fired" if she tacked anything to the wall which was absurd since there were huge black screws attaching the valence. After she left we noticed a white hook on the wooden valance and I played with the sheet until I could get it to stay up and block some of the light. Pretty ridiculous. I imagine the cottages might be very nice, but the inn, not so much. If you still intend to stay here after reading this, definitely make sure you are not on the parking lot side, and apparently you need to call ahead to confirm the bed size that you requested.

My wife and I went to Solvang for a weekend getaway and stayed here. The cottages were cute. We got a Chateau Loft, which was very spacious. It wasn't a super fancy room, but very quaint and peaceful. Right in the heart of town and good walking distance to pretty much everything in Solvang. Very short drive to the nearby wineries. Service was good and they have a free wine tasting happy hour. If you're looking for a cozy cottage place in a good location, this is an excellent choice.

Hmmm....we checked in here because we got a great last-minute rate when we walked in. From the outside, it looks quite adorable, and is in a great location! We stayed in one of the LOFT ROOMS, and we found it a bit creepy. It's a very LARGE room, two floors, sparcely decorated, with an odd layout. You literally walk from the hallway into the bathroom. There is a toilet and shower in a separate room to the left, and the bathroom sink is there to your right, out in the open...no privacy. It was a bit like an inexpensive ski lodge, looking over the parking lot. Decor was something out of a 70's porn. We did walk around the property, and if we'd stayed in one of the very few "cottages", it might have felt very different. The cottages did seem quite nice. On the up side, breakfast was included, location was excellent, and it was quiet.

Room Tip: I'd suggest you try something other than a "loft".
