“Quick get away in Solvang”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

My wife and I decided last minute to get out of town for two days. We stayed here just because I didn’t feel like jumping from place to place, too tired after driving. I was a little surprised by the $280 price tag but just caved in. They did let us check in early (11:00 AM!) and also dropped the price to $250 for the corner room. Staff was always very friendly and professional. Room was definitely on the small side but furniture and 4 poster bed where nice and comfortable. The only lacking feature is the sink had some major rust spots and needs attention, but everything else in the room was fine. It’s in the middle of town so easy walking distance to everything Solvang has to offer. My wife is handicapped and has limited walking ability, so this was an advantage. You have a choice of above or underground parking with direct elevator access. In the hot summer the underground parking with direct elevator access was a big plus. The breakfast was nice with fresh pastries/bread from the bakery next door, fresh local fruit, and cold cuts. The dining room is nicely furnished and service was good. If you need the four star service (cleaners, etc.) then it’s worth the extra money. I’ve just never had a need to have my laundry cleaned and pressed while away so we will be looking for a more economical inn on our next trip. They do have some very nice large meeting rooms downstairs for business or reception type meetings if you have that requirement.

Room Tip: If you would like a room with a balcony they do have several available.

Visited Solvang, which is meant to be a Danish village in California, and stayed at the Petersen Village Inn. Happened to be there at their annual car exhibition by chance, which was quite interesting. Solvang is more wine tasting country than a "piece of Hamlet". Clean and quaint, no Danish spoken anywhere that I could see. Hotel was expensive for what it was, but the rooms overlooked a small courtyard/garden, which added to the quaint appeal.

The Petersen Inn is an old and charming inn in delightful kitschy setting. The Inn will be refurbished beginning in January (which it sorely needs). However, the staff and the breakfast were wonderful. The room was a good size, but the furniture was truly tired. Remember hen you go that several restaurants are closed Monday and Tuesday, and, if you want ice cream after 6:00 PM - forget it! Almost all shos are famiy owned and close early (We were there n August)

Keep an eye on it, it will be worth visiting after refurnishing is completed. The location is ideal.

My husband and I stayed here 1 night during Labor Day weekend. The hotel is in a prime location in downtown Solvang. Restaurants, bakeries, and shops were all within walking distance. Our hotel room was clean and had a small porch that faced a courtyard and pond. Despite how crowded the town was, noise was not an issue. We arrive a couple hours before check in time and our room wasn't ready. But the staff was very friendly and accommodating. They gave us several wine tasting vouchers to use while we waited.

My only complaint is that the room we had was very dated. The furniture, bathrooms, carpeting, TVs, and fixtures were in desperate need of updating. For the price of the room I would have expected more modern amenities.

Overall it was a pleasant stay, but I would likely choose one of the other hotels in the area during our next visit.

We stayed here using a TravelZoo voucher and were very pleased. We opted for the Courtyard View room (#336) which was bright, cheery, and very quiet. Nothing was worn out in the room as others have stated and we found the decor very pleasant with comfortable bed and plenty of hot water. A complete buffet breakfast was included as well as 2 wine tastings. Fresh water and delicious pastries are available in the lobby. The staff is very professional and helpful. We also had dinner (not included) in the hotel restaurant, Cafe Provence. The menu offers European type dishes and our choices were all very good. The restaurant overlooks the lovely courtyard. We will definitely return and felt that it was a great value at $139. Note that room renovations will begin soon which might impact the quiet atmostphere...best to check with the staff before booking.

Perfect location in the heart of Solvang. Great hotel back in the '80s but it has not been update or renovated. While it was clean, staff was attentive, and the beds comfy, the room was worn out! Arms on the love seat and chair were worn through exposing the stuffing. Lighting in the bathrooms was poor and dated. Wallpaper in the room was damaged in many areas and coming off the walls. Bottom line...this hotel has not been shown any love for a long time.

How in the world does it still rate AAA 4 Diamonds. Makes me question the whole rating system.

We have stayed at this hotel at least once a year since 1996, usually in March for the Solvang Century bike ride. It has always been a very quiet, European-style hotel with plush carpets, soft music, and a gracious staff. It's situated in downtown Solvang and is convenient for all downtown shops as well as Santa Ynez Valley attractions. The hotel is still owned by the Petersen family but is now managed by another company. The hotel is planning major renovations after the first of the year but will still be open to some extent. This past Saturday we were graciously assisted with a noon check-in as we had an event in town at 1:00 p.m., although another lady at the front desk insisted on a standard 3 p.m. check-in, no exceptions. Fortunately, we were accommodated. I would still recommend this hotel, depending on what the new rate structure will be and whether it will remain a quiet, peaceful facility. Breakfast was included in the rate but maybe not after the first of the year. The dining room is light and airy.

Room Tip: Most rooms have views of Solvang's quaint streets. We prefer a sothern exposure.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Landsby, a newly renovated 41-room boutique hotel, will bring a unique hospitality offering when the doors open in spring 2015. Located in downtown Solvang, a small town in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, the property will combine a bright contemporary design with Scandinavian elements inspired by the town's Danish roots. The Landsby, which means "the village" in Danish, will offer an authentic hospitality experience to both visitors and locals. Designed by Santa Monica-based design firm, Studio Collective, the hotel incorporates a Scandinavian lodge aesthetic with a design nod to the past. The hotel lobby has been completely reconstructed to add relaxed lounge spaces and a new bar. The bar's lively atmosphere will be the perfect place for patrons to gather and enjoy a craft cocktail or glass of locally-produced wine. The bright and welcoming guestrooms, including several junior suites and our signature tower suite, will be finished with blonde woods, brushed brass fixtures, genuine leather accents and sophisticated, yet comfortable, handcrafted furnishings. The rooms will feature whimsical artwork commissioned by a regional artist and thoughtful accessories, which work together to create a residential ambiance. Standard room rates start at $225 and suites start at $329. All guests will have access to the property's redesigned outdoor garden lounge. This new space will prove an oasis for guests can relax and unwind among lush landscaping and romantically lit trees. Additionally, the property will serve as an ideal retreat for meetings, with multiple meeting venues offering a total of 2980 square feet. The property also provides full-service amenities, catered meals from the restaurant, as well as access to courtyard and garden areas that can be used for breaks. Mad & Vin, the hotel's highly anticipated restaurant, is inspired by the local wine region of the California coast. The name of the restaurant, which translates to "food and wine" in Danish, continues to play off of the hotel's Scandinavian inspiration. Executive Chef Seth Nathan will develop a specialized menu that captures flavors from around the world and incorporates them into foods native to the area. The restaurant will offer dinner seven days a week in addition to daily breakfast. A complimentary breakfast will be included for all hotel guests. Located 35 miles northeast of Santa Barbara, The Landsby is centrally located in downtown Solvang and steps away from boutique shops, bakeries, art galleries, sidewalk cafes, wine-tasting rooms, and restaurants. ... more   less
