“Very Good Place in Simi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2007

Unusual for a Holiday Inn Express, this property does not have inside corridors. However, since this *is* Southern California and most of the corridors *do* face in to the hotel courtyard/pool, it retains a reasonably upscale feel.

Check-in was very friendly. The rooms were up to the usual high standards of a Holiday Inn Express, with clean/elegant/functional bath, extremely comfortable bed/bedding, microwave and fridge, and a modern/quiet A/C unit. The high-speed wireless internet is very good. On the downside, there are very few TV channels, although I suppose you should be out enjoying the nice weather instead of watching TV. The shower did the freeze/scald cycle every 30 seconds, but my brief poll of other guests in the morning indicated that this was only an issue in my particular room.

The hotel is located near the west side of Simi Valley, and is easy to get to off the 118 freeway. There are several restaurants within walking distance (including IHOP and a nice Mexican restaurant), plus many within a short drive. Simi is a nice suburban-feeling community about 40 miles or so from downtown L.A. It's over a pass from the San Fernando Valley, so it has a totally different feel. Simi today is probably what the San Fernando Valley was like about 30 years ago before the SF Valley became the densely populated and frantic extension of L.A. that it is today.

The first night we stayed there was only one room left. It was the room with the jacuzzi suite--room 309. The room could use some updating for sure and a more thorough cleaning. When my 1 year old walked around barefoot in the room, I noticed that the bottom of her feet were black! It also didn't appear that housekeeping cleaned under the counters, where there was some garbage--not ours.
We stayed here again a couple nights later--in a different room. It was normal (without the jacuzzi) and no black feet! Still could use updating--but at least it was cleaner.
The fitness room was great for us. The front desk was friendly and the breakfeast was ok.

  • Liked — Fitness room and the location of the hotel
  • Disliked — The jacuzzi suite had a window between the room and the bathroom so you could view the person in the bathroom!

Holiday Inn Express Simi Valley. We chose this location owing to it's relative proximity to Six Flags. Having never visited Simi Valley before, we were pleasantly surprised with both the hotel and the surrounding area. The views of the graduated and terraced mountain greenery is simply breathtaking. Just minutes from the freeway, we found a clean hotel and welcoming staff. Our jacuzzi room was nicely furnished and spacious. The breakfast spread offered the usual HI Express items- yogurt, cereals, tea, cinnamon rolls, h/boiled eggs, coffee, tea, muffins and fruit. Centrally located courtyard pool and small common jacuzzi. We drove (less than one mile) to Town Center Mall- and had dinner at a wonderful Tapas-style Spanish restaurant, "Limon-Latin Grill. Other dining options included Red Robin, California Pizza Kitchen, and many others. Other dining options just blocks from hotel include pizza, burgers, 7-11, etc. Computer kiosk and printer off lobby.
Short and simple- you won't go wrong here.

This motel has an excellent location that is very convenient, but it does not have very good “drive-up appeal”. However, once inside the room we were pleasantly surprised. The room was clean, had VERY comfortable beds with nice linens and the towels were of better quality. The bathroom was also clean with a “newish” tub/shower. The room was furnished with a small fridge and microwave. The hotel appears to have been renovated in the not too distant past. Although it is older property and built in the “motel style” with exterior room entrances, the property has been secured through locking gates. The complimentary breakfast was adequate with a decent selection and a couple of hot items. The fitness center had basic equipment (one of the two treadmills was broken). Wireless internet always worked. Front desk personnel ranged from average to very-good (Kudos to Traci). Compared to other hotels in the area, we felt like we got a good value for our lodging dollar.

No real negatives to mention other than a blanket comment about Holiday Inn Express toiletry items. The soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion have a cinnamon scent that is nauseating.

Me and a friend went to Simi Valley for a few days last september. We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights.
We got a room with one double bed, which was just great. The room was big, and had a desk with a stool, and another table with 2 stools. It had a tv that worked just fine, and a fridge, and a microwave. The bathroom was big and tidy.
But since we were on a vacation we loved to sleep late ('til 10 or 11 in the morning) so we missed breakfast for 2 of 4 days. But that was ok, we didn't like the breakfast very much. For the two days we decided to sleep late, we were awoken by the maid. That was kinda frustrating.
Two of the days they had some maintenance work on the stairs, but it didn't bother us, we just used the elevator instead.
It was a great stay, and I would deffinitely stay there again.

  • Liked — Everything about my room
  • Disliked — There were no computers for the guests to use

As a wedding present I was looking to book a room for my sister-in-law and her husband. I found a great rate on Holiday Inn’s website, and decided to book a room for myself and my wife as well. At check in the front desk was appalled that we would require the discounted rates on both rooms, and questioned how we were able to get a discounted rate. After the onslaught of questions we were finally able to get to our rooms. My wife and I were looking around the room and noticed we only had two towels, so I called to have some additional towels sent up. Imagine my surprise when two pillows showed up at my door twenty minutes later! The poor kid running around felt so bad that he was told to bring pillows instead of towels brought us more than enough towels. Well, after finally getting settled we decided to take a swim in the pool. Yet again another big mistake! The spa was closed, and the pool had no clean towels available. After running back up to our room to get towels that they ask you not to remove from the room I was grateful that I had requested additional towels. The next morning we got up early to get breakfast before they closed at 9 AM. The breakfast was less than average, but did have quite a variety of juices. Well, after breakfast the real fun began! We were walking back to our room to find yellow CAUTION: DO NOT CROSS tape blocking off the area in front of our room. Well, it turns out that they were having the railing replaced in front of our room and we were unable to get back to our room. The maintenance crew told us to go see the management. We spoke with Ashley at the front desk that was amazing. She apologized profusely and called the manager to come meet with us. Well, we tried to explain our frustration to him, but he rudely interrupted my wife and asked that we continued our conversation as we walked back to our room. As we walked and talked he again accused us of swindling Holiday Inn by getting a discount on rooms with jetted tubs, and that since we were already getting a discount he couldn’t do anything about the inconvenience. He did however offer to extend our check out from noon to 1 PM, but told us we would need an escort whenever we wanted to leave our room due to the maintenance. We stayed only long enough to repack our bags and get ready for the day and checked out due to the unbearable smell of burning metal. I could not believe that they would put us in a room that they knew would be having maintenance the next day. Be smart, stay somewhere else!

This hotel had a perfect location for my business visit. After the experience, I would have stayed elsewhere. I had a room with two queen beds. One mattress was bad, the other was awful. There was a funky smell in the room. Management was indifferent to complaints. During the time I stayed, something was wrong with the TV system for the entire hotel and, from what I was told when I complained, had been for a couple of days. No warning of the problem was offered at check-in. No compensation was offered when I complained. Bad beds, a smelly room, and bad TV reception made the stay less than perfect. The response of staff and management made the stay maddening.
