“Wood cabin, warm feeling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012 via mobile

We stayed in room #3. It was very clean, warm cabin decor. Great dining room room behind the main office that you can use anytime. Decent continental breakfast and friendly service. The bed was comfy but a bit soft for an old back. We'd go back again!

My husband and I stayed in one of the hotel rooms at the beginning of August 2012 for a weekend getaway. We were a little worried about our room facing the main road through Shaver but it was surprising quiet and we didn't have any problems getting to sleep. Every experience we had was wonderful: office staff we very friendly and willing to help, great location within walking distance of the entire town & lake, and our room was nothing but comfortable. We had never stayed here before but are already planning on coming back for our anniversary!

We would absolutely reccommend the Shaver Lake Hotel for anyone looking for a nice, clean, and inexpensive stay.

We stayed here in July 2012 and picked up bed bugs which I am now battling in my house. We were in the building furthest from the office and had to stay in a couple of different rooms since the hotel was full and we didn't arrive with reservations, so I can't say for sure which room we caught them from. I know they came from this hotel because we haven't stayed in any hotels in two years. The exterminator said "looks like you've had them about a month" which coincided EXACTLY with our return.

We recently purchased this hotel about the time of this review. I apologize for the delay in response time as we did not have a Trip Advisor account until today. During our due diligence period in escrow we had pest control inspections on the hotel because we also had read Trip Advisor complaints in 2010 about possible bed bugs. There were no sightings of any infestation at that time and in fact we believed the previous owners were diligent about eradication of all insects and bed bugs. It would be easy for me to blame the past owners, but that is not fair to them as I believe they did an excellent job upgrading and maintaining this facility. That being said, I personally cannot think of anything worse for a guest than to experience bed bugs. This is my wifes greatest fear of hotels! If this guest did in fact obtain bed bugs from our hotel, I am ashamed and deeply embarrassed. As a hotel owner, this is our greatest nightmare. Most of you are probably aware, bed bugs are usually brought into the hotel from an outside source.......generally the luggage of a guest, obviously without the guests knowledge. It is our job daily to inspect all linens, mattresses, and furniture to make sure we do not find any traces of these nasty creatures. It is possible this room was missed. If that was the case, I deeply apologize and would be happy to try to make this right with this guest. Unfortunately, since bed bugs are brought into all hotels from outside sources, we cannot prevent their occurance......only eradicate them when they get here. This week we are implementing a new deep cleaning policy for each room on a regular basis (including steam cleaning) to coincide with the daily inspections. We will continue to monitor and implement all possible solutions to this crisis. If there is ever a machine or chemical invented to prevent them, I will be the first buyer. Again, my deepest apologies!

I stayed at Shaver Lake recently to attend a wedding in the area. The hotel rooms looked like the picture on the internet. The hotel is not fancy but does have that old lodge look. I do wish there had been a rug in the bathroom since the flooring is old stone pebbles and it is hard on the bare feet. I was impressed with the service response from the manager. Our alarm clock was broken and he took the time to get it replaced for us. The location is close to everything and next to Ken's Market. The internet speed was a bit slow at times. The only suggestion I would make would be to have a customer printer available for printing boarding passes at the hotel. Also there was a tiny Farmer's Market on Saturday in the parking lot. I would definitely stay at this hotel again in the future.

Thank you for your review! During our walk through inspection of the hotel rooms prior to our purchase, we too were concerned about the aggregate floors in the bathrooms. From a practical standpoint, they are very durable and relatively easy to clean.......but are not comfortable to the bare feet. Maybe your suggestion of a rug would be the best bet. We are also investigating tiling over the aggregate. Hopefully we will have an acceptable solution soon. We have ordered new pedestal sinks and faucets to replace the existing formica tops. When those arrive, we should be able to address the flooring issues. Thank you again.

My Wife and I stayed one night in the newer Log Cabin and did not have a good night. We didn’t discover a few problems till the evening, and the office was closed early.

The room was clean, rustic and exactly as advertised. The first issue was the heater in the bathroom created smoke, so we decided to leave this off. This made the bathroom incredibly cold since even at full tilt the gas fireplace in the main room couldn’t pick up the slack due to the cold temperature.

At bed time we found if the pillows were any thinner, they would have disappeared. Even though the room had a pull out bed, there were no extra pillows. We made due with jackets under our heads.

The bed was as lumpy and uncomfortable as the worst flop house variety.

After a tough sleep we found the shower was broken. The hand held shower head only stayed on the wall at waist level. Couple that with a frigid bathroom it made the morning shower a shiver-fest.

The odd thing about the room was there were very few places to put anything away. No closets: The bathroom had no shelves and in the bedroom there were very few drawers. It was easy to find no hair dryer was provided, since there were no shelves to keep it.

We would have mentioned these issues to the office, but no one showed up the next morning. We didn’t bother using our roaming cell phone minutes to call the number tacked to the office door.

Although we had not yet purchased this hotel at the time of this review, I found it most helpful in determining what improvements we wanted to make to this property once we took title. None of the cabins or rooms had hair dryers which I thought was odd. We have added hair dryers to every room and cabin, changed all televisions sets to the large flat screens, changed linen companies, changed pillows, added a new lodge room with a continental breakfast now included with your stay, new water system with new plumbing, electrical upgrades, and within 30 days a new parking lot and signage. We have added new swings, horseshoe pit and are working on promoting outdoor movies soon. Our new lobby will be completed shortly with a custom front reception desk made of sinker logs from the bottom of Shaver Lake. Thank you for the helpful review and hopefully you will give us another chance someday.

We stayed in the "Antelope Apartment" and there were Several! randomly placed doors to other areas/rooms of the facility. They all had a sign that read do not enter, employees only. It was odd and uncomfortable to stay in a place that had 100% access from the bedroom, backdoor area near restroom, and 2 front doors; all that did require a key, but there was no security latch like at most other hotels. The owner or any one that had access to the keys could easily come in at any time. The bedroom that had a door to the next room had a small latch but could easily be pushed opened and you could see light around the entire door frame and hear the tv/people on the other side. The beds were terrible! Squeaky and very uncomfortable! It was big though, enough to sleep 8. Definitely not a traditional hotel.

I agree with the guest on this review. The way I understand the history of this building, this particular suite was originally part of a retail building with many doors. When you enter the suite and walk around both downstairs and upstairs, you see several closed doors with signs. It was relatively confusing and a little intimidating. Since our purchase of the hotel, we have removed the excess doors and sheetrocked the openings to match the walls. We are in the process of changing the last remaining door from a hollow core to solid wood door with a latch to the next room. It is possible we can make this Antelope Apartment into a 3 bedroom suite eventually.
