“Renovated hotel in a sleepy coastal town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

We stayed here for our honeymoon, the week before we were in downtown S.F. We spent 6 nights here at the Hillside Cottage thinking that it's a 'cottage'. It looked like a newly refurbished big casa turned into an exclusive hotel merged with the spa/old hotel next door.
The first thing we noticed was the placed reeked of paint!!! It must have been -very- newly renovated, and there are a lot of weird features in the room itself. We could write an essay about it but that's alright. Lets concentrate on the good stuff.
We found that the staff are generally very accommodating. We did ask for an international charger, some local information and enquired about a wine tour. Wendy surprised us with a bottle of wine when she discovered that we were there for our honeymoon. Thanks Wendy!
All in all, what made us happy with this place is the view of the harbour and the sleep quality is much better in Sausalito than in downtown S.F.

My husband and I recently took a trip to Sausalito with my in-laws and our 3 young children. Upon arrival, we were shown multiple rooms to make sure we would have just what we needed. This took quite a while, but the staff (Melissa?) was SO patient with us. We were given a room with a beautiful view of the water and boats. We were supplied with a pack and play for our baby, and the pull out bed was made up for our other children. When we asked the front desk for information about the area, they were more than happy to help. I had snacks delivered to the room, and when Wendy saw we had children, she ran downstairs to bring them candy bracelets. Near the end of our trip, my daughter's comfort item (stuffed bunny) went missing. We asked Wendy at the front desk if it could have gotten mixed in the laundry. She made calls to housekeeping but no one had seen it. She went to the spa and got a sea lion for my daughter to sleep with that night. The next morning as we were checking out, at least 4 different staff asked if I was the guest that had lost a stuffed bunny. Clearly, they were all aware how important it was to us that we find it. Almost a week went by after we got home with no bunny. Imagine our surprise (and my daughter's elation) when a package arrived on our doorstep with her missing bunny inside. The physical hotel was clean, charming, and had great views. But the customer service surpassed my expectations. Any staff that values the entire customer experience the way they did has my stamp of approval. THANK YOU for a lovely stay, and for returning my daughter's most prized possession!!

Room Tip: Room 401 had a bedroom and sitting room with pull out couch. The view from the balcony was beautiful

The final stop of our USA road trip. I hadn't realised when I looked on line that some if the images were of work that will be completed later this year, and don't exist at the moment. Excellent location, very helpful staff and perfect room for a family of three adults, affording privacy. The balcony overlooked the harbour, but was lacking a bit In privacy as was near a flight of stairs, directly in front, I would have preferred the room with the I overlooked balcony. It was very clean and comfortable. Valet team very efficient (24 dollars a night). The spa was very popular and I have no doubt that when the works are finished later this year this will be a stunning hotel. Very good, light breakfast at the Poggia restaurant next door included (go the bar and order!!) we sat waiting until we realised. Very friendly place.

This was the first stop on our trip down the West Coast and we were very pleased with it. The setting is beautiful with wonderful views over the bay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. There are some great restaurants nearby in easy walking distance along with a variety of shops. The room was a very good size with the usual amenities.all in all, it was excellent value for money and we were very satisfied and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: We had the Court room

I had the pleasure of spending last night at Casa Madrona. It's a lovely, quirky, boutique hotel and spa. It's built into the hillside of Sausalito just north of San Francisco. It's a $20 cab fare out of the city across the Golden Gate Bridge, and would be a great place to stay instead of in the city.

I had special requirements, and they had them perfectly arranged. Asking for more towels and ordering cold drinks was easy and fast (considering there are a lot of stairs!!)

The room was in the Mansion, apparently owned by the treasurer of Sausalito a long time ago. It was sold to a lawyer and made into a bed and breakfast. Now it is a wonderful hotel.

The Mansion room was small (300 sq/ft) but brand newly renovated. A beautiful glass wall shower in a small bathroom that was still very comfortable. It was a bright white room that was very 'happy' feeling. The bed was soft and wonderful to sleep on under the comforter. A fancy coffee machine, a little fridge, and a real wood writing desk were great additions. A large flat screen was on the wall, but not obtrusive or even seeming out of place.

You are right at the room door. And you can hear people in the hall, but these are destinations, not throughways...

You take the historic elevator to get to the renovated mansion. There are a number of stairs after to get from the fourth floor level to the sixth where our room was. Fortunately the staff are more than eager to help get your luggage to and from your room. Room service was amazingly fast considering all those stairs!

Another room option was a small cottage that has been renovated but isn't quite finished (no air conditioning). I would have upgraded in a heartbeat if it had been opened and cooled by the bay air. It had a separate bedroom and seating area. A very funky little sitting nook in the living room, a huge soaking tub along with a glass wall shower, and a balcony that overlooked the bay. It would be much more private.

Morning room service is delivered from their adjacent restaurant. The ham and egg panini was great, and a huge meal. The steel cut oats seemed to be rolled oats instead though. But the berries and fruit and pastries were all great. And super fast. Much faster than any 'corporate' hotel I've stayed in that has a huge kitchen. Plus they had to use the stairs!

When I go back, and I'll definitely stay there again, I was told that the other larger room with the sitting area would have air conditioning and I'll jump at that room, even if only for a night.

We found it only after looking hard. San Francisco was booked to 82%. But Sausalito is nice and close. Funky shops and restos to walk too. The bay right across the street and a beautiful view of San Francisco.

And they have a sister hotel in Stowe, Vermont. I wonder what that would be like...

Room Tip: Try for the Mansion rooms if you can afford it. And while there was no noise that disturbed us, you...

Green Features: The shower was full strength, the toilets had two flush levels. The rooms had recycling cans as I recall.

We just returned from two nights at Casa Madrona with our family of five (2 adults and 3 children). Wendy at the front desk was very warm and welcoming and so kind to our three children. We were upgraded from our original room (Cottage Suite) to the Hillside Guest House (Room 704). The room was beautifully decorated, offered a large amount of space, and had the most incredible views of the Bay. The telescope was a nice touch and was great to check out the boats. Two of the windows in the front of the room opened and let in a nice cool breeze. The soaking tub is HUGE and the bathroom had nice amenities. The pull-out sofa was a comfortable bed for two kids. The location of the hotel is perfect. Yes, there are a lot of stairs but we were warned and didn't hear too many complaints from the kids. Walking distance to restaurants, ferry, etc. And the valet was very quick to get the car when needed and was willing to lug our suitcase up all those stairs for us.

The room was recently renovated and there were a few kinks, which I'm sure will be worked out. For example, the A/C was not operational when we stayed. This would not have been a problem but for the unseasonably warm day on our arrival. However, maintenance brought us several fans that did the trick and the front desk stocked our fridge with some snacks and beverages to cool us off. Also, each day the fire alarm went off while one of us showered. Again, I think it was just a bit overly sensitive and will be worked out, but it wasn't too much fun to wait in a robe while maintenance checked out the problem. While there was a full kitchen (sink, fridge, oven, stove, microwave), there were no utensils, plates, etc., just a couple of glasses, coffee cups, and wine glasses like any standard hotel. I think some additional kitchen items would have been a nice touch.

All in all, I would definitely recommend Casa Madrona. The room was well-appointed, offered AMAZING views, and had plenty of space for our family. Service was great and the staff was very friendly.

Room Tip: Room 704 has amazing views of the Bay and offers a full kitchen.

Stayed here 3 nights with family on vacation, beautiful harbor view room on the top floor, amazing views of the water. Great experience, the staff was professional, the valet guys had our car ready every time we needed it. Sausalito is beautiful, with a relaxing slow pace and no crowds, the perfect location to stay at when visiting the bay area. Ferry to SF only a 5 minute walk from hotel, go see Alcatraz (book in advance), enjoy Pier #39 and the aquarium, catch a Giants ballgame and then take the ferry back to Sausalito. Good restaurants just minutes away. Casa Madrona is our SF area Hotel of choice.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views of the bay.
