This was a three day trip to San Francisco and we thought it would be nice to stay in Sausalito away from the crowds of the City. We made the right decision for sure. It is wonderful to take the ferry that is located a short walk across the street to either the Ferry Building or Pier 41. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, SF skyline, are awesome and you will pass right by Alcatraz. The ferry schedule is available at the desk or Valet is happy to help. Just know that during the week the last ferry back is 5:30pm (later on weekends). We spent more time and took a cab back (about 22.00).

The staff at the hotel was so nice and friendly starting with the valet. The rooms were very clean, well decorated but a bit small. There was a lovely court yard area with modern seating. My husband used this as he smokes. We were on the top floor and that can be a problem for him when he needs a smoke but there was a back door to a beautiful large multi level open area.

Having the beautiful village of Sausalito to take a walk ,shop or have a nice meal is just magical. All along having one of the most spectacular views of the greatest city in the world.

The only downside we had was after meeting friends in Napa for dinner we returned about midnight to discover there was not Valet to take our car. We learned later that the desk clerk would have done it for us. Not a big problem for we parked in the parking lot just across the street for the night. The fee was 22.00 but the Valet was 24 dollars a day and the hotel was more than happy not to charge us for the night for their service.

The only other down side was when we returned to the room at 3:30 our room had not been made up and we had to get ready for dinner. In my opinion that is a small thing and I understood that we were the last room on the floor. When everything else is so nice it is easy to forgive the small things.

I left my heart in SF a long time ago but now a piece of it is in Sausalito at the Casa Madrona! Many thanks to the staff and the Valet guys for all their help.

Nice enough hotel but when compared with other hotels on this and other trips I can only rate it as average, for three significant reasons: Location, room service and given the first two, price.

What we saw on the hotel's website clearly inferred to us that we would be staying in a bay windowed room, quite possibly overlooking a grassy hillside and the sea beyond. (It was the peace and quiet that had attracted us to this hotel). The reality is that the hotel has two parts, a modern extension sitting beside the older structure that is featured on the website. The whole building is situated on the main road through Sausalito with about two hundred yards of asphalt car park between it and the water. We were in a modern room with a little balcony perched over the road. It was nice enough therefore but not what we were expecting and was overpriced when compared with other hotels on this trip.

We also had the distinct impression that they really don't want to do room service. There is, for instance, no breakfast menu available to leave on the door the night before - the system is that you just phone down in the morning. The problem with that is that more often than not the phone was left on answerphone and it was beyond 7.30 a.m. before establishing any human contact ... and then, of course, we had to wait for breakfast to arrive. As is the norm in most hotels, quality and amounts were also variable but this hotel added another twist. Call me uber picky if you will but I get grumpy when I have to wait too long for my tea and then find that it tastes foul because the hot water is from a *coffee* pot that hasn't been properly cleaned.

To sum up:
1. Be aware of its location. If you'd like a hotel situated 'in the thick of it', this will probably suit.
2. If you're hoping for what you've seen on their website you might want to check *exactly* where you'll be staying - modern or old part of the building.
3. If you're a businessman hoping for an early start or holidaymakers who like breakfast in bed, you'd probably best scratch that idea and simply go down the road for breakfast

It was lovely! The view, the town, the Lighthouse diner where we had breakfast was recommended by a staff member of this hotel and it was fabulous...try the raspberry pancakes!
I'd go again and stay!

“Not as Good as the Cookie”

Casa Madrona Hotel

Jun 20, 2008

So we loved Sausalito, but not really this hotel. Their site really doesn't show you what it's like. The location, yes. That is great -- beautiful views of the boats, good food, but the hotel itself was less than desired. We found the room to be ONLY just clean, holes in the rug, holes in the comforter and the bathroom was just clean enough that I felt just clean enough. We only stayed two days, but that was more than enough time for me to wish we had stayed somewhere else. I think this is a refurbished property, if so, you can tell. I so wanted to like it, but other than being a nice quiet room with a good view, there is not much more I can say about it. Next time we will go with our gut and stay in the city and just visit Sausalito.
