Casa Madrona Hotel

So we loved Sausalito, but not really this hotel. Their site really doesn't show you what it's like. The location, yes. That is great -- beautiful views of the boats, good food, but the hotel itself was less than desired. We found the room to be ONLY just clean, holes in the rug, holes in the comforter and the bathroom was just clean enough that I felt just clean enough. We only stayed two days, but that was more than enough time for me to wish we had stayed somewhere else. I think this is a refurbished property, if so, you can tell. I so wanted to like it, but other than being a nice quiet room with a good view, there is not much more I can say about it. Next time we will go with our gut and stay in the city and just visit Sausalito.

This was the second time we’ve stayed at Casa Madrona Hotel and we opted for a more expensive Bay view room this time. We arrived a little early and were quickly checked in at the front desk and shown to our room by congenial staffers. We noticed that the coffee maker was missing; reported it and by the time we moved our car from a municipal lot to the valet (an extra charge, but convenient) and returned to our room, the coffee maker had been installed. Our room “Bridgeway to Hollywood” was on the 4th floor and afforded a wonderful view of the harbor and bay. The windows were expansive enough (and openable for a nice breeze) that we didn’t at all miss having a balcony. True to the theme of our room, it was furnished in a classy, subdued glam-style with a faux fur throw on the bed, mirrored walls, glossy photos of classic Hollywood stars like Gable, Taylor, Monroe, Bogey and Becall. It was a lot of fun perusing the 2 coffee table books with famous photos of the even more famous stars. But I wondered how many “under 40’s” would be able to identify most of them. Our spacious and light-filled room had such a beautiful carpet that I actually took a photo of it. The queen-size bed felt comfortable, but the mattress was on the soft side for my back. The bath was a decent size with marble checkerboard flooring, an oversize shower (the head did leak a bit) and a mirror framed with bright lightbulbs--another nod to the Hollywood stars. When we checked in, I asked if our room had wine glasses since we’d brought a nice bottle of Zin to enjoy and using drinking from water glasses just wouldn’t be the same. Rick at the front desk assured me that there were, indeed, proper wine glasses already in our room--something that many places of lodging don’t provide unless asked for. We would give our room “4 stars” and it was a true pleasure to relax and stay in. The only negative of our stay was having a little kid next door who loved to run, run, run and scream at the same time. He/she sounded like a small buffalo with a screeching parrot on its back, but the hotel shouldn’t be faulted for that as no walls could have blocked out such sounds. As most people know, Casa Madrona’s hillside buildings have been added on to over the years and there are many flights of exterior steps to negotiate. The elevator will only get you up part way. Those with limited physical strength or abilities should always inquire about access. Both times I’ve stayed at the hotel, I’ve enjoyed the little workout I received getting up to my room, and the stairs make the property much more interesting than a single level facility. It’s a unique and lovely hotel. We loved being able to just walk down those stairs to the street level and have dinner at Poggio. The restaurant is as great as ever and their house-made pasta is fabulous. Altho’ the place was busy, service was efficient and attentive. Unfortunately, we didn't have an opportunity to take advantage of the hotel's spa services. The next morning we took a stroll down Bridgeway and had a delicious and hearty breakfast at the cozy Bridgeway Cafe. We sat next to the window and had a nice view out to the Bay. It’s a great place to watch the world go by. All in all, our short stay at Casa Madrona in Sausalito was a very welcome respite from a busy schedule.

Very nice room (Harbor View King) with a balcony overlooking the marina and San Francisco Bay. Some traffic noise during the day, but quiet at night. High quality furnishings and supplies, huge bathroom with two sinks, oversize tub, large shower stall. We had a great time.

This hotel is a step above the rest! A quaint, comfortable place in the heart of Sausalito! Park your car and walk to all that Sausalito has to offer! The staff was exceptional upon check-in. Everyone was very attentive and courteous throughout our entire stay. The room we stayed in was spacious and had ample room to relax and enjoy the scenic views of Sausalito and the harbor! The bathroom featured a separate shower and spa tub. The hotel provided nice towels and robes as well as nice, quality shampoo and lotions. This is a place we won't soon forget! In fact, we haven't really stopped talking about it since we left! We will be sure to visit this lovely place again!

A friend recommended a night in Sausalito because of the wonderful views and the small cozy town. I found Casa Madrona through a google search and the description of rooms, the balcony and the views sounded perfect. When I heard the price of the room $279/night, I thought it was a bit expensive but I figured it was a really nice hotel and would be worth it for just one night. I was so disappointed when we arrived - almost embarassed that I paid so much. My boyfriend would have killed me if he knew how much I agreed to pay. We did receive a room that had a balcony and windows that allowed a view of the bay - only if the big full tree wasn't in the way. My boyfriend and I walked in and he said it was almost as good as a Super 8 hotel. Some of the room attractions: The old TV was stuck in the corner of a built in shelf that didn't swivel and couldn't because of the size of the shelf. A "couch" was available under the TV against a wall but it was basically a wooden box that was covered with cheap carpeting (no cushioning at all). The decor of the bathroom and sink outside the bathroom were dated from the 70's. There were steps that surrounding the bed so you had to go up two steps to get into the bed. These steps were also covered by the same cheap carpeting that covered the "couch". Coming from a week at the San Francisco Marriott where I paid $169/night, this was so disappointing. I wanted to go back. Thank god the room was clean and the service was very friendly. This was their only saving grace. There were other rooms that looked like they had views so maybe I would have liked them better. However, I'm sure they were +$300. I will not be returning to this hotel.
