“Everything we needed and more!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Stayed here 6th-8th September with my girlfriend. Drove from San Francisco on a Friday afternoon and the traffic was awful. Took us 3 hours and this being the first time I had driven in the States and in an automatic, the journey was draining. When we checked in, we took the car to park outside the room, about 200 yards from reception. I couldn't get the card to open the door. I tried every which way but no joy so I walked over to reception again and got it changed. Came back and it still didnt work. After trying for a minute or so I could see the receptionist walking over to help me. Turns out she said the door must have been at fault...back to reception again and she changed our room and said this was an upgrade for our trouble. No problems this time, room had a sofa, fridge, microwave and coffee machine and was clean so we were very happy!

The breakfast is self service but there is a lovely spread and its a perfect start to the day. You can bring your breakfast out of the little room and eat it by the pool in the morning sunshine. The lady working in the breakfast area was very efficient and made sure everything was replenished, be it the hard boiled eggs, toast or the coffee. The pool area was quite quiet during our stay and very relaxing. Water a tad bit cold but not majorly so.

Overall we were very happy and in the end disappointed that we couldnt extend our stay for another day to enjoy the lovely weather.

Our room had the usual microwave, hair dryer, iron, ironing board and a refrigerator a bit larger than the usual motel room size. There was a table with two comfortable chairs, a desk with office chair and convenient plug ins for chargers, etc. The bed was queen size and just firm enough to be comfortable. The sink and wide counter space were outside the toilet and tub/shower room. The shower had good pressure and high enough for me at 6 foot 6 inches. We were in room 148 at the rear of the motel opposite the huge pool and hot tub and it was quiet. No freeway noise and no night time partying at the pool. We would stay here again. We paid $89 a night for the queen room.

Room Tip: Room near the rear of the property, there are four buildings

This was a busy hotel right off highway 101. The rooms were very basic but quiet and the beds quite comfortable. The staff was fantastic as we quickly discovered the microwave did not work and the front desk immediately came to the room and replaced the microwave. This was first class response to a problem. We would definitely stay here again if we return to the area.

Room Tip: Since this is near highway 101 it is wise to choose a room toward the back on the south side by the...

Since it is so close to 101, we expected to listen to traffic all night. Plus it's a very large motel with rooms opening to the outside, and the No Vacancy sign was lit when we arrived, so we expected car noise and talking all night. We asked for a quiet room but still didn't have high hopes for a good night's sleep. BUT WE WERE WRONG. Even with our window open, the highway noise was minimal and the other guests were apparently as tired as we were. We had two quiet comfortable nights at the Sandman. The breakfast room was large enough, and you can sit outside by the pool if it's warm enough. The attendant was very attentive, keeping the food stocked and the tables and counters clean. The room was perfectly clean and seemed new and fresh.

This was a one night stay on a cross-country trip. It is a family run motel and its greatest asset is the people who run it. The price was better than most in the area and the motel is clean but can use new pillows. The pillows we had are very old and flat. Plan to bring your coffee and a snack back to your room because the office is tiny. The walls are thin and even though the people in the next room were talking softly in the next room, it was difficult to sleep because they talked most of the night.

Room Tip: This motel is on a busy street so try to get a room away from the main street

Needed to go to Santa Rosa for an overnight to ride in Le Tour de Fuzz, a great bike ride that winds its way through the vineyards of Sonoma County. The Sandman Inn was rated fourth among hotels in the area by Trip Advisor, so I decided to check it out. It is a motel but a very clean one with a friendly staff. They allowed us to keep our bikes in our room and were very conveniently located on the northside of town. The ride start was a five minute drive from the Inn. For location and the basics it was very good.

Room Tip: Lower floor in the back near the pool was a quiet location.

With the exception noted in the headline, Sandman is a perfectly reasonable choice for a motel. The rooms are better furnished and tidier than most. It has the usual issues of noise from above if you’re on the first floor, blank-faced teenagers at the front desk, and a cheap, all-carbohydrate breakfast. But if you want to save money or are just passing through for a night, it will probably work for you.

Now for the big exception. There’s something about places that charge extra for pets. Quite a few, including this one, use pet owners as a way to get rid of rooms that no one else would want. At Sandman the “pet rooms” are in a dark corner building, across from the maintenance room. Parking is down the hallway and around the corner, instead of the usual front-of-the unit location, so don’t bring a lot of stuff with you. It’s a pain to get it to the room. My room also had a glaring florescent light right outside the window that was on all night.

It’s like you have some sort of embarrassing social disease and have to be segregated from the general population. And then you get to pay more than the "normal" people. Next time I’ll plan my stops around places that are truly dog-friendly. It’s not worth the feeling of second-class citizenship at motels like this one.
