I've stayed in all kinds of hotels, from Fairmont and Ritz-Carlton luxury hotels, to boutique B& Bs (such as the Grape Leaf Inn in Healdsburg), and chain budget-priced accommodations similar to the Hilton Garden Inn. This particular HGI was better than all those taking into consideration the location and price.
As other reviews mention, this is a new property--only about 8 months since it's opening. So it's clean and shiny and the staff are committed to keeping it that way. Upon arrival they reminded us that the entire property is dedicated no-smoking in order to maintain the quality. Hooray! The rooms are traditional in terms of decor and not terribly large, but spacious enough. There's free WiFi throughout the property, a small fridge (that's quiet!) in each room and a microwave. Good news if you take leftovers from any of the many wonderful restaurants in Sonoma county. The bed is on the extra-firm side, but it has nice linens and is covered by a duvet that the property advertises as having been washed between guest stays. That's good news for those of us who know how really dirty most hotel bedspreads etc. are.
There are lots of towels in the bathroom, which has only one sink and a tub-shower, but the shower curtain has a mesh top which allows you to see out and lets light in while you're showering. A nice feature. Also, there is no noisy fan attached to the bathroom light, a god-send for those of us who find the din of those fans annoying.
There's a small work-out room with head-phones so you can watch a personal tv attached to each piece of cardio equipment. It would be nice if the Inn invested in some weights--a suggestion from my husband.
The real plus of this property are the staff. Priscilla at the front desk was especially warm and helpful; Amy, the evening waitress was terrific as was the morning waitress. Even the cook in the little restaurant--which has terrific food, by the way--took time to wish us good morning and ask if our meal was okay. Everyone was very friendly and worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. (Mission accomplished.)
I will definitely stay at this property again. It's not the Fairmont Kea Lani--my favorite hotel in all the world--but it's also not $600 per night. And, to be honest, for that price you expect people to be extra nice. For $132 the staff at the Hilton Garden Inn Sonoma were more genuine. Truly terrific!
