The only real positive experience for this hotel is the location - right behind Third Promenade - all the shopping and restaurants that you could want. The hotel foyer gives you a false sense of what the actual hotel will be like. The foyer is actually pretty nice, fresh white orchid arrangements, Spanish style with brown leather chairs and a large TV. Front desk were helpful, polite and accommodating.
And now comes the BUT. Our first room we were given was on the second floor on the horrid smoking level. The room was the tiniest room I had ever seen with over sized furniture taking up what little space we had it was room 229, overlooking the internal mechanics of the hotel. The room reeked of cigar and the carpets were sticky underfoot. I actually felt claustrophobic. My partner being an asthmatic could not stay here so we were shifted to level 3 room 329 which again overlooked the internal working pump (just keep your blinds closed!) but the room was much more spacious and didnt reek of cigarette smoke. Make sure you request Non Smoking. It sickens me to think hotels still allow smoking rooms. Disgusting.
The room was dated, tired, and carpets were again sticky underfoot. Bed (King size) was comfortable enough but you couldn't sleep in as the hotel itself was noisy and house keeping began cleaning at 8am or sometimes earlier: none of the rooms seemed to have the do not disturb signs either. You could also hear adjoining rooms conversations through the vent in the bathroom. Upstairs was also very noisy, we even went up to investigate if in fact the floors were wooden, but alas 4th floor was another carpeted room. Cable TV was a joke, some channels didnt even work - I read though that they are in the process of upgrading I think. Not that I go to a hotel to watch cable tv, but sometimes when you're resting its nice to be able to watch something decent.
The lift is small and cramped so make sure you take the stairs. I feel sorry for the guys who bring your bags up, makes their job extremely difficult.
We stayed at 7 hotels all the way down the CA coast on our vacation and this was the only hotel that indeed charged for Internet usage. Very poor Hotel Carmel. A huge disadvantage and inconvenience. In this day in age it's crazy to think hotels still charge patrons!
Late check out is only one hour extra too, so bare that in mind - they will hold your bags for you though. All staff and concierge were friendly but overall this hotel was very disappointing. Only thing going for it is the location.
Try Chloe Bar next door for some beautiful cocktails.
We didnt try the breakfast they had each morning, too busy in the foyer and no where to really sit.
