I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Casa del Mar. I was in Santa Monica for business and stayed, off and on, for almost an entire month.
The staff were always friendly and treated me like a VIP, even though many times I hardly looked like one (my dress is quite casual). Still, the doormen / valet attendants were especially accommodating and made me feel like I belonged.
In my experience, the rooms at Casa del Mar are generally pretty small. Each room I had felt cramped, even when the staff gave me a complimentary upgrade because I couldn't handle how small my first room was. Still, they were comfortable. I especially liked the bathrooms--with deluxe massage baths, a separate shower, candles (with pipe matches to boot), and often a window that opens up onto the bed area so you can watch TV while taking a soak.
On the weekends when I got to visit home, my daughters loved getting the complimentary teddy bears, placed on the bed each night.
Oooh. The beds. The beds at Casa del Mar are divine. Probably the best I've ever slept in. Crisp, clean sheets, a wonderfully soft mattress (but not too soft) and big, fluffy pillows. Outstanding.
I never did have much of a view of the ocean, but often could catch a glimpse of Santa Monica Pier. To see the Pacific in its salty glory, all I had to do was walk to the outside deck.
The heated pool and whirlpool were first-class, and the adjacent patio area overlooking the ocean was supremely relaxing. I never went into the spa/exercise facilities, but they are rumored to be first-rate.
Internet was fairly reasonable--less than $15 a day, if memory serves me.
And yes, the prices are steep, but remember that this is a restored 1920s architectural landmark. Plus you're paying for convenience here: the beach (and the Ocean Front Walk) are literally steps away, as are beautiful views and great restaurants.
The lobby restaurant/bar is a nice mix of upscale and casual, with couches and lounge chairs toward the rear and formal dining arrangements near the ocean-view window. Still, I'm not sure I would recommend the food at Casa del Mar so much, just because there are a plethora of great dining choices within walking distance. Two standouts: Capo at 1810 Ocean Ave., and Pedals—now named "Coast," I believe—next door at Shutters on the Beach, with lemon-ricotta pancakes that are not to be missed!.
Overall, Casa del Mar is a relaxing hotel experience where you're always comfortable, the staff always treat you right, and you're always going to pay a lot!
