We live in San Francisco, and to escape the cold and fog in the summers usually take our two little kids and sometimes our two big grownup kids to Santa Monica for a warm beach getaway without having to fly to, say, Hawaii to get it. We have spent the last three such mini-vacations at the Hotel California. Now, don't get me wrong. When I have the cash I'd WAY rather experience the luxury and opulance (and the pool!) of the Loews next door. I'm all for a bit of pampering. But for an entire week? The Loews would kill my credit card. And actually, you know, the Hotel California is far superior in a lot of ways. It's far more comfortable for us to cook in our own kitchen and have an extra bedroom to pack away small children who go to bed early or need space for a nap. The Hotel California is perfect for a family. Don't bother with those tiny little rooms. Go for the full suite. It's the only way to stay there comfortably. The Hotel California is just downright cool. It's close to the beach and the Pier. It is homey. We stay in Room 37, which is on the ground level, and my kids play out front on the walkway. We feel very at home there. I've stayed in their other rooms, and it was a mistake. As the other reviewers note, they are cramped and on the noisy side. But the suites are really apartments. The decor is fun, the location is wonderful, and it's a really great place to sit around and relax while spending time at one of the more beautiful beaches around.

  • Liked — Availability of apartments so we could save a bit of the budget and cook ourselves.
  • Disliked — No pool, but with the beach right there it was a minor problem.

Stayed one night Labor Day 2007. It did not occur to us that a hotel in LA would not have air conditioning, so we did not think to verify when reserving. The room was small and very stuffy even with windows open and ceiling fan. Decor was cute and location was good. Bed was comfortable. Parking was a hassle. The lot only held about 10 cars( one of which was about 3 feet from our room) at a $14 charge, they said Loews next door was $28, but we did find a space on the street about a block down around $10.00 and were able to park at the hotel briefly to load luggage. Also room did not have hairdryer and no answer at the front desk until after 7:00 am.

  • Liked — cute decor, well located
  • Disliked — no air conditioning

This hotel made our vacation miserable. There is NO AIR CONDITIONER in this hotel. We had booked a junior suite. This unit was to have 2 rooms. It did but the second bedroom had no door and about 6 inches to walk around the whole bed. This made for no room for suitcases. We were uncomfortably crowded. The bathroom was extremely small. NO BATHTUB. I had a better shower stall at the last campground that I stayed at. The knob fell off the faucet. The T.V. reception was horrible and the remote control did not work. The small sofa in the front room had a broken arm. Because there was no air conditioner we had to leave the windows open. This makes for terrible sleeping conditions. Every morning we were woken by the cleaning ladies scrubbing and hosing off the grounds. Every night it was hard to fall asleep with the sounds of cars racing up the road. The staff was OK, they did reduce our per night fee after telling them how dissappointed and upset we were. But, that wasn't enough. The parking is a nightmare. There are approximately 10 parking spots and about 25-30 rooms at this hotel. This posed a huge problem at all times of the day. Also, if you do get fortunate enough to park on the lot there is a $15.oo a day charge to park on the lot of the hotel you are staying at ! Did not know this until check-out. The location was good but I would have preffered to have A/C and a door on the 2nd bedroom than be close to the beach. Their website photos are VERY misleading. Consider this hotel carefully. Pay a little more and get a hotel with the ammenities you are use to. We felt like we were camping and dirty the whole time we stayed at this hotel. When we look back at our family vacation this is what sticks out : Our horrible hotel that made our vacation miserable. Don't want anyone else to have to have this experience.

Stay at this place for the location, its an excellent location, its almost on the beach, there is an exit very close to the beach. (you cannot re-enter at this gate though). Its also only a short walk to 3rd street Shopping area, and very close to the pier too.
It's a very basic place but theres a lot close to it, if you need a gym you can use LA fitness for 10 etc... down the road.
The staff were pleasant enough.

The location is the only reason you would stay here.

Decor:
The rooms decor was terrible, it's too unmaintained to be quirky, they probably think it is quirky. The pictures on the wall are faded and horrible, and lacks any cohesive theme.

Air Conditioning.
The air conditioning didn't work I dont know if it works in other rooms but it was very hot. big difference if the air condiditoning would have worked.

Bed.
The bed was very small, they could of fitted a bigger bed in it would of made a lot of difference.

Generally no attention to detail in the place, its pretty rough I wouldn't try to bring your gf on a romantic stay here.
They cannot get the basics right like bed and airconditioning, I was on the top level so at least there they should of had the airconditoining working. Opening the windows didn't make much difference.

A great place to stay in Sant Monica. Good location near pier, Lobster restaurant and Chez Jay. Although next to road it was quiet with great decorations. A small hotel that makes a big effort.
