“Great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2014

Can not go past this place for price or position
It is quirky and a little dated but clean and friendly. The rooms comfortably slept our family of 4.you literally walk out your door down a small flight of stairs and your on the famous Santa monica beach .turn left and walk a little way and your on muscle beach then keep taking in the spectacular scenery and eye blowing sires of the interesting people that make thier living here .keep walking and your in Venus beach.no need to spend big money on hotels in Santa monica cause trust me you will never be on your room

We spent 3 nights here with a 1 night break in the middle when we went to Disneyland.
Great location very close to the Pier / Muscle Beach & a short stroll into the main town.
We stayed in a Junior suite which is 2 rooms with a queen bed in each which was well laid out & very clean & tidy, the first 2 nights there was a bit of noise from the apartment upstairs but with jet lag & really comfy beds we got to sleep ok. Our 3rd night we had an upstairs "Alcove Suite" (room37) this was a lot more spacious with a sitting area & the 2nd bed off in an alcove behind a curtain. This was great. We had 2 small children with us & there was plenty of room. The beds are sooo comfy . The Reception staff were great , friendly & informative especially Katie who even left us a note for when we returned as she was not working & wanted to wish us goodbye properly . Complimentary coffee, juice, bagels & Muffins in reception for breakfast was also great. Highly recommend this & the mexican place right next door was great too.
No Aircon but the fans were fine for our trip in June .

Room Tip: ask for an upstairs room at the beach side /rear , the front road gets a lot of traffic & ther...

We have just spent a week here, and what a fantastic week. The staff were superb, very helpful and friendly. Our housekeeper was brilliant - kept us in coffee. I wish I had written all their names down but they were all very good. Room was delightful with a great bed (new mattress put on whilst we stayed there :-) ) The Hotel was a couple of minutes only from the Santa Monica Pier, the beach and great night life. It was a paradise. We had a room that opened onto a small patio area where we took our breakfast. Would love to go back again at some point and would definitely book in at the Hotel California.

Room Tip: Ask for a downstairs room with the patio. Some of the downstairs side rooms also had seating areas...

First we loved the sound of staying at The Hotel California and weren't disappointed when we entered the reception area. The Hotel is themed beautifully to create that California feel. Great location, so close to Santa Monica pier and surrounds. The hotel room was spacious and clean. Katie at reception was fabulous. She told us to use the website "Sportswhereiam" when we wanted to go to the Baseball at Dodger's stadium. We used the tips for parking and tickets and had a fabulous day.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor and could see the Ferris Wheel at the Santa Monica pier at night. It was...

This was my husband and I's first stay at Hotel California and we look forward to the next. The entire staff goes out of their way to make sure guests are comfortable - the front desk, is truly great, especially James. Upon arrival he made us feel welcomed and right at home, he gave us direction around the city throughout our stay and let us in on all of the must see spots. The location is excellent, right by the beach and blocks from numerous bars and restaurants. The rooms are kitschy but that only adds to the low key beach vibe

The parking is $36 a night, which is a drag because you don't need to use your car much with everything near by. But we needed it so it was okay.

Thank you to all of the staff at Hotel California for taking such good care of us!

Short TL;DR version: after an initial major issue with the room was remedied by the extremely responsive and friendly staff, I had an excellent four night stay in a junior suite at the Hotel California with two friends. Weather was highs of 75 and lows of 60; any warmer and it could have gotten a bit warm in the room during the day (I like it quite cool, especially at night).

Longer version: I knew that as someone who prefers a sleeping temperature of 70 or below and who needs a quiet environment for sleep that I was taking a risk by choosing a hotel without AC and with hardwood floors. I took the advice of other reviewers and asked for a room on the second floor (to eliminate noise from people stomping on hardwood floors above us) and toward the back of the property (to reduce road and sidewalk noise). All of the windows open, and there are sea breezes. The layout of the suite is a living room with a double bed that is in a three-walled alcove with a curtain, and a bedroom with a queen size bed. There is a fan in each room, but the bed in the living room is too far from that fan to feel anything. There is a mini-fridge/freezer. The bathroom is somewhat updated. It was hard to get the hot water to the right temperature, but it did work. One outlet did not work, and one set of living room blinds would not close (I was able to turn each slat manually); those were minor issues. With hardwood floors and old doors, if my roommates were walking around there was really no way to sleep through it; I am a light sleeper.

The major issue for me was that there was a skylight directly over the bed in the living room. Seriously! I was exceptionally tired the first night there after not getting to the hotel until 1:30am, but was woken up quite early by birds chirping outside the skylight and of course sunlight. As someone who needs a full 8 hours to feel good this was not going to work out for four nights. I was afraid I would have to change hotels or at least change rooms. I asked the front desk what they could do the next morning. Within an hour a maintenance person came and closed the skylight cover, fixing the noise, and then got on the roof and covered the skylight with a trash bag or something. It completely resolved the issue. I was quite relieved.

As other reviewers have said, the wifi was quite spotty. The grounds were clean. I closed all the windows at night to reduce noise. The location is amazing. Ask for a "hard" key so that you can use the gate closer to the beach. There are free muffins, bagels, and juice in the morning, and free coffee/tea and fruit all the time. The staff were very polite and friendly on the phone and in person.

The ambiance, kitsch, and character of the place are noteworthy. Lots of art and trinkets. That said, for me personally, the main reason I would stay at the Hotel California again is because of how cheap it is for the location and size of the room. Otherwise I'd prefer not to take the risk of high temperatures and noise. But if you are someone who can handle some noise, or can still sleep in a room that is 80 degrees and humid, or if you love unique hotels, I definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor, away from the parking area and Ocean Ave. Be wary of skylights over be...
