I'm surprise by some of the reviews. We found the front desk helpful and all the staff very pleasant. Our room was spotless and although it partly overlooked the car park, it also had a lovely partial view of the ocean. We didn't experience any kind of dress code or 'attitude'. I wandered around in jeans and t-shirts for most of the trip and was treated with nothing but courtesy.

The hotel is in a great location - close to Third Street and the beach. The rooftop bar wasn't open when we were there - I assumed it was still being renovated - but to us that didn't really matter. Santa Monica is packed with excellent restaurants and bars. Lots of them are within five minutes walk of the hotel. Wherever you choose to lay your head, it would be madness to just eat at the hotel.

Santa Monica is a beautiful part of the world. There are lots of homeless people but they're rarely intimidating. I'd happily stay at the Huntely again.

What can I say...other than ring the hotel before you book to find out if they have still got renovations going on and make it clear you want your money back if you book and they do not tell you the whole truth!

We checked the webstie and it said a 12million dollar renovation had been completed, a fab rooftop restaurant with 360 views of LA by some top designer in New York was available, there was even a few pics of the view from the restaurant.

We arrived tired after a 16 hour journey and retreated to the room at 6pm. I rang down to book a table for the restaurant to be told that it was under construction? We were gutted as we specifically booked the hotel so we did not have to tramp round LA every night for something to eat...we wanted the high life but without being forced to leave ;)

After the initial dissappointment we got on with our vacation and were having a good time. Bear in mind we booked a "renovation complete" hotel as we have had the neighbours from hell (both sides) for the past 6 years who do DIY from 8am - 10pm every weekend and every evening in the week...we really wanted some peace and quiet.

Monday morning I was woken up at 8am by the familiar sound of a drill..followed by some banging and then just for variation a bit of sawing wood. As you can imagine, jet lag, no restaurant and now construction, ARGH!!!!!!

We complained and they moved us to a better sized room, but nearer the construction?. They didn't seem to understand that we were a bit miffed as we were unable to relax in the room between 8am and 6pm due to the noise. Still it forced us to explore more which was nice but not really the kind of holdiay we were looking for.

Then on departure we requested a refund of 50% of the price for the 10 days we put up with the construction...it took a full month, 10 e-mails, 12 phone calls (from the UK) and a threat of legal action but we did get our refund in the end (I say that - I have a document from them showing the refund has been done but my bank account doesn't yet agree)

The hotel itself is actually quite nice, decoration is acceptable and atmosphere was good too. Only a few things like drawer knobs drilled in sideways and buzzing lights, business centre a little inadequate and luke warm water in the mornings for showering but not to the point that it annoys you. The staff were great people though, really helpful and the lady in the Cafe was a total star, she made each morning brighter. Views from the room was fabulous also.

I would stay here again one day maybe once the renovation was complete as the location is excellent. Virtually every major LA street ends within walking distance of the hotel and it's 20 paces from the beach so where ever you drive you just need to follow street numbers down if your lost and you always end up home!. 5 mins walk to Santa Monica Pier and 2-3 mins walk to 3rd Street where all the shops and restaurants are.

Rude Security Ruins It All

This is hotel which has problems only with SERVICE (as the rooms are very clean and spacious) because 1) the staff is very un-corteous to simple/working class people who don't wear expensive Armani suits 2) has expectations about who the guests are and how they should dress. My experience was severly hampered by an incident when I was checking out, after paying $150 a night for three days, as I was climbing the stairs, a
big security guard said I could not go up and he put his hand out. He was extremely rude to me and threatened to "remove" me from the building if I did not comply, he even called another security guard, both of these men were (type) dressed in fancy suits with the "undercover ear piece" pretending to look like CIA agents. As a result of their gathering upon me, I could not check the email one last time that was promised on the Rad homepage, and I lost a few contracts for work because of it.

I was wearing jeans and normal clothes, but as this is a very upscale hotel, they must have thought I had wandered in from the street. I later told the manager that he would not let
me use the restroom or even check email and the manager said he would only "speak to him". There is a "serious L.A. attitude" problem with these snobs.

Sorry, not everyone drives expensive cars and is in the film industry. I can not recommend this hotel based on my experience but if you are well dressed, have money, then its probably the place for you so enjoy its elitist treatment. What a joke.

When I drove into the garage at the hotel, the valet looked at me like I had stolen the car and he did not help me, this is a hotel for the very rich but I paid for my 2 days here. When I returned to my car, which was left, awaiting to be parked by the valet with keys inside, windows wide open and the valet's driving like maniacs in other cars, the garage man looked at me like I was going to steal something. The reception desk is full of snobs who didn't seem too concerned by my reservations and they gave me a smoking room (I'm
allergic to smoke). Too many rich people, who are quite arrogant and rude, sit in the lobby and I felt truly uncomfortable.

The only good thing I have to say about this place is that it is near the beach and the
3rd street promenade, in a safe, yet desolate area. Do not walk by the beach at night, for many homeless and gang members are occupy the place.

Very nicely decorated hotel with large rooms, but a lot of them face a parking lot and the view is therefore nothing like the one pictured on their site.
However, what is really the problem is the service, or lack of. The front desk needs to step up, very simple service tasks can not be performed, but the worst is that they have a serious attitude. And the standard respons is, Oh my gosh!
The hotel also lacks the possibility to enjoy a drink in the lobby area, which we missed. But maybe that was ok, because the lobby is intensly perfumed with scented candles, so after five minutes, you are sure to have a headache!
The restaurant on the top floor is closed because of remodeling, there is a temporary location in one of the conference rooms, horrible!
An ordinary room at this hotel should not cost more than 250 dollars, otherwise, choose a different hotel, and get a better value for your money!

  • Tips/Secrets: — Be sure to ask for a room that does not face the parking lot, or at least, ask for a high floor!

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights and had a wonderful time, but for what we spent I wished I would have picked another hotel. One that had a balcony or a swimming pool to sit around and relax. After a long day of walking on the beach(wonderful)and shopping (wonderful), and eating and drinking(wonderful), I hated to go and sit on our bed to relax when we went there for the weather and sunshine.
The rooms were clean and very comforable and the tv was a great bonus but at night we were kept up by the noice of the elevator even though our room was way down the hall. All we heard were the heavy room doors closing all night and very early in the morning, the morning paper being dropped out side your door and everyone else's, the t'v from both sides of our rooms. I'm not one to complain but for the money, the walls were paper thin and we were awake by 5 am everyday. (not much of a holiday sleep)
If you are a heavy sleeper and don't care about having a balcony or a pool then maybe stay here. But for the money I'd not stay there again. There are alot better hotels tostay at.
