We have just returned from a visit to california with our adult children. Our first stop was the cal mar suites. It was the one hotel that concerned me.We are used to staying in at least 4 star hotels and after reading some of the reviews on this and other websites we thought it was going to be very basic, noisy and not very clean. But as we needed 2 rooms and santa monica is expensive we thought we would give it a go expecting to check out if it was so bad.
Well it wasnt bad at all, it was great. The staff were helpful, polite and charming. The hotel is old and shabby but it dosnt matter because it filled our needs. It was clean and both my sons had big fans over the beds to keep them cool. They slept in the large lounge and we had a kingsize bed in the bedroom. They put fresh flowers in the room each day.The pool was clean and ususally empty.A lovely big fridge with ice box and enough crockery to have a basic meal.I asked for more knives and were given them in a few minutes.Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. It is small so everyone is friendly. Our room was noisy and if I went again I would make sure i had a room on the second floor and not overlooking the alleyway.
When we left we stayed in big hotels in las vegas and san fransisco. But my sons said there favorite hotel was the Cal mar
.If you want grandure dont stay there but if you want a hotel in a great position and dont want to eat out for every meal then go there.
