We are a couple mid 40s, from Calgary.
We were looking for a cheap hotel that still was safe and hopefully clean. Despite the flimsy lock on the room door and the windows not too secure, we got what we were looking for.
Room quite small - bed, 2 chairs, small desk and chair, wall closet, dresser, tv. Tiny bathroom.
As close to the beach as can be.... you walk across a little street, down a litlte garden hill, and there is the beach.
Once across the street, easy to walk right towards santa monica pier and then back again.
Easy also to walk left to venice beach but that is at least a 1-2 hour venture. we went on a weekend when all of the "displays" are out -- people dressed in their get ups were quite interesting.
The waves weren't enough to have the surfers do anything spectacular to watch.
Walking distance also to the 3rd Street Promenade. And also to the Sunday Market. That was crazy to get something to eat there so we walked further and just had bagels.
Having a little fridge in the room was good - although we walked forever to find a grocery store to get food.
The reception room even had a little record player where one of the men was playing records!
The front of the hotel has excellent ocean views - we just sat at the tables in the late afternoon. Our room overlooked the "garden" which was a tiny triangle of grass with nice flowers.
We had no trouble in the area with homeless people or other things that people commented on for the area.... but we generally weren't out later than 9 pm.
Getting to the hotel from the airport -- took the airport shuttle. $14 each.
Public transportation from santa monica to downtown LA was only $1.75 each, but took 45-60 minutes. A cab ride for the distance would have been huge $$$$.
Overall good value for money. No luxury. No problems.
Great location.
