Went to Santa Monica and stayed at Bayside Hotel from April 17-19, 2008. We chose the hotel for the location and budget. It is located beside 5 star hotels like Casa del Mar and Shutters on the Beach but way below their price for the same view of the ocean. This hotel is very casual and staff are friendly. We selected the room in the garden to suit our budget. It is in the inner part of the hotel with a little garden in the middle. It is spring time so we don't need aircon, fan is ok plus open windows to let the ocean breeze in. Parking here is FREE unlike other hotels which charge parking a night! Accomodations are not fancy...just something for you to sleep and take a bath. Bed is ok, we slept comfortably. There's a celing fan, portable heater, marble desk with chair, three lamps, cable TV, sofa, coffee maker with two complimentary coffee, tea. Bathrooms are ok with nice hot shower, wall heater, and wall soap/ shampoo dispenser. Best deal is the beach is just few walks away. There is also a park where you can relax and play just in front of the hotel. View of the sunset is just amazing. The Santa Monica Pier is around 5-10 minutes walk. Tide Shuttle Bus stops directly across the hotel. It will bring you to the main street and promenade, so you don't need to bring your car coz parking is hard to find near the promenade and its expensive. This bus ride comes every 15 minutes from noon to night and is 75cents only. Dining...try Ye Olde King's Head if you crave British Food like Fish & Chips and bangers & mash. Check-out is easy. We paid what we booked in the internet, no hassles. Overall, experience is just excellent!!! Thanks Bayside, we had a great time.

  • Liked — location and budget
  • Disliked — no breakfast...how about adding donuts and muffins next time haha; also tight parking but its FREE so not a big deal

We stayed for one night. After checking many motels in the area this turned out to be the best price for the location. Many motels did not have this great location or was way over priced. The rooms were rather outdated as other users have stated, but they were clean. All we wanted to do was sleep so it was ok for use. The staff was friendly and helpful - we were able to check in early when we arrived. The location was great - it looks out over the beach - very short walk to the pier and 3rd street. Free parking - which was also a plus - several motels charge for parking - and the entire town seems to charge for parking. We drove around the city just to site see a little but when we were ready to just explore we parked at the motel and took off walking... went to Venice Beach, S.M. Pier, 3rd street, and S.M. Beach. We would stay again at this location.

The hotel was more than I had expected from reading other reviews. Although very small the location couldn't be beat! I found the hotel staff to be kind and helpful.

The Bayside it's just ok, but you can't beat the location , in front of the beach. you won't find anything better for less than US$ 200. The staff is rude , the rooms are little and there's no room for all the cars in the parking (although they pay for you parking in the street in front of the motel)

I stayed at the Bayside for 2 nights and wished I could stay longer. The location is great as it is literally by the beach and about 5 mins from Third Street Promenade and Main Street. The rooms are small and a little out-dated, but the location and price more than make up for it.

I was initially quite apprehensive about security though, as the rooms seem to be pretty accessible to just about anyone. But the neighbourhood is safe.

Getting there from the airport by bus was a little tricky. You can take the Big Blue Bus #3 to Pico and 4th, and then walk along Pico Blv to Ocean Ave for about 10 minutes. It was alright for me as I only had a backpack, but I imagine it to be horrifying for folks with pull-along luggage.
