“A Fun Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Selected this Santa Monica hotel for two reasons...close to LAX and on the beach. We found it to be delightful. It's a kicky little 1930's style hotel which has been totally refurbished. What it lacks in modern amenities, it makes up for in charm. The porch out front is the obvious choice if eating at the hotel while you are staying here. Across the street is the beach and people watching is at its best. The room doors have retained a cute open-the-latch peephole to see who's knocking. The bathroom faucets, etc. are probably new but have that heavy industrial look from the '30's and the tile in our bathroom was a splashy green, black, and white. We even spotted a pipe in the ceiling, left over from the good old days. The air conditioning worked great (will freeze you out) and the hot water stayed hot as long as you wanted. The toiletries were an herbal blend that evoked a spa sense. Even the elevators are old, paneled in heavy wood, and one even sports the original hand-operated floor selector wheel (what DO you call those?) location. Our only problem is that during the one-night stay there, the alarm went off in the elevator and beeped continually for a while.....we're from Texas....could it have been a fire alert? Earthquake alert? Tsunami? Nope, just the elevator. The next morning there was an out-of-order sign on the elevator so we had to use the other until the former was quickly repaired. Stay here. It's absolutely adorable.....and by the way, is close to the shopping district called Promenade on 3rd street within walking distance.

We were impressed with this hotel from the moment the valet took over parking our car. A lovely, welcoming foyer with fresh flowers and an old world feel with art deco design. We were a little disappointed to not be able to have an ocean view room (not available for a twin share, which we needed as we were travelling with children). Our room did however have a window that had ocean glimpses up to Malibu. We had breakfast on the patio one morning and the food was excellent, as was the service. Situated perfectly on the beach and a close distance to all Santa Monica attractions such as the Pier and the shopping precinct. It is also listed as having a resident ghost :)

Room Tip: Choose a room not near the lift shaft, which is quite noisy

The service at this hotel is some of the best we have ever experienced and we are seasoned travellers. We arrived at the Hotel at 6.30am after a dreadful 6 hour flight from Honolulu with Delta Airlines and the welcome we received was amazing. We were quickly attended to and were lucky enough that our room was available - we couldn't believe our luck. We ate on the hotel verandah three times during our 3 night stay and the food and service was of a very high standard. The hotel is well located - close to shops, great places to eat, the Santa Monica Pier.

The rooms are not huge but not tiny either and they are clean and comfortable. I agree with previous comments about the staff - they are exceptional in their willingness to help their guests enjoy their stay.

The only thing that we found difficult was the level of noise between the rooms - as mentioned by a previous reviewer - you can hear the plumbing noises from other rooms and voices late at night which meant that we didn't sleep soundly during our stay. I'm not sure how this could be fixed without taking away some of the hotel's charm. This would probably have us look elsewhere next time we visit Santa Monica unfortunately.

Room Tip: Front rooms have a fantastic view to Santa Monica pier and the beach - worth paying the extra

Dear Kristine H,

An early check-in is always our pleasure to provide when available, it can make a world of difference after a long flight. Wonderful to know that this, along with a Veranda breakfast, pleased you.

Our team thanks you for your praise of exceptional service, this is something that we strive to provide to all of our guests. These are the things that we can control. Voice level is sometimes not as easy.

Perhaps you will return for breakfast again.

Regards,

Laura W.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of June. The location is fantastic, right on the ocean font and the staff were all very helpful. Valet parking makes life easy if slightly expensive at $26 a night but that appears to be in line with, oval rates. The hotel maybe feels a bit tired and some other properties on the Ocean front look good prospects - I guess it all depends on rates. I would stay again.

I gotta tell ya, these guys are great. Michael R couldnt do enough for us, and helped organise our Car service for the four of us travelling to and from LAX at a very reasonable price. He was always in contact with me through the process and it worked out 100%.
Nothing was too much for any staff, they all were very friendly and courteous. I recommend having Breakfast on the Verandah and soaking in all that Santa Monica has to offer. This Hotel was within Walking distance to the Sightseeing bus stops, the Pier is only minutes walk away, and you are really in the best spot to get to the start of the 3rd street promenade.
The reason we picked this hotel was mainly for its Decor, as my Daughter loves things from that Era.
As for the rooms, they are modest. we had a twin room on the top 8th Floor with queen beds thanks to an Upgrade from Michael R. We spent a minimal amount of time in here, really only for sleeping etc. As I always say.. If your going to worry about a room your staying in, you've got the wrong idea as to why your on holiday... It was cosy and comfortable, yes the bathrooms are a little smaller, but didnt bother us at all.
Room service was great, the food was great, the waiters and Bell hops were fantastic.
Thankyou to everyone at the Georgian who made our stay so amazing, we would definitely come back here.

Room Tip: Look for a room with a view either Malibu side like we had, or other. Waking up to that beautiful s...

We stayed here for two nights. Overall the service was the highlight, along with location right on Ocean. The downside for me, though, was that although it is meant to be Art Deco, the rooms are very small. There was also A LOT of outside hallway noise and noise outside our window. Bottles crashing, people talking, it all could be heard. The bathroom was small(essentially European size). Again, the service and location are great, which make up for a lot, but I'd likely stay elsewhere if I could.

Dear Snp83,

Thank you for your kind words regarding our service and the beautiful location that is Santa Monica.

There are multiple room types and sizes to choose from at The Georgian Hotel. We are always happy to assist in providing you with accommodations that would suite your taste and budget.

The sounds from Ocean Avenue and the street behind are something that many locations on the street must contend with. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Sincerely,

Laura W.

My husband and I and our pre-teen stayed here for 3 nights recently while visiting friends in SoCal. This is a perfectly nice hotel -- it has its charms, and it's in a great location on Ocean Av. The valet parking was very efficient and convenient, and we enjoyed having breakfast every morning on the veranda while watching the scene on Ocean Av. Our room was quiet, the furnishings were pleasant, and it was very clean and well-maintained. There are many thoughtful touches: bathrobes, down comforters, turn-down service.

The problem is, it's just not a comfortable place for more than one person, and at $350/night, we felt a bit ripped off. Our room was more like a Hampton Inn double than the "Deluxe Queen" we expected at a boutique hotel. A short hallway leads to a small square of a room. There is a tiny bare-bones bathroom off the hall. We did not spring for an ocean view, so our windows looked out on the cement facade of the building next door. It was difficult for all of us to dress - modesty required us to change in the bathroom as there is no alcove or other small area for privacy, and there is no full length mirror either.

The bathroom had been recently updated in a retro style, with ceramic tiles and a quality sink and toilet, but the shower is a 1960's style tub with a shower curtain. Shampoo, lotion, and shower gel are in dispensers attached to the wall. There were no hooks or towel racks in the bathroom other than the hotel rack which is in the shower and filled with folded towels, so the towel you dry your hands on goes on the glass shelf above the sink, and your wet bath towel hangs on the exposed pipe near the ceiling. Applying makeup requires you to straddle the toilet to get close enough to the mirror.

In the room, there is a petite table and desk with a lamp, but the single very large lamp between the two beds made it impossible for one of us to read while the others slept. Perhaps the beds really were queen size, but they sure seemed like double beds to us and we felt very crowded at night. The you-touch-it-you-pay bar and snacks apparatus was cheesy and over the top -- not only was there a display of chips and candy and $7 water bottles on top of the dresser, there were two more shelves of junk food underneath, as well as a bar fridge in a cabinet below.

I can see why this hotel has so many great reviews, because it does many things right, but ultimately the discomfort of the rooms, especially the bathroom, was a big drawback and we would not stay here again.

Dear Gingembre,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations. Our queen / queen guest rooms have received positive feedback in the past, even from a family of 4 that were also traveling with their dog. I am sorry to learn that this room did not suite your tastes. Should you chose to return, you may prefer our Signature Suite, offering larger spaces and privacy. Perhaps you will come back to enjoy breakfast on The Veranda and watch the scene on Ocean Ave.

We would welcome the opportunity to see you again.

Sincerely,

Laura W.
