“Do one thing well - but not every time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Generally excellent burgers (including chicken and veggie), made to order with custom toppings. Fries, sweet potato fries, & delicate onion rings all delicious. Good shakes too - and wine and beer served. The burgers can be a bit inconsistent in terms of both flavor and cooking (can be either undercooked or overcooked) and the place is really noisy. Weekday lunchtime caters to young crowd from across the street, with early dinnertime filled with young families, crowd growing up as the hour progresses. There's often a wait at busy times.

“Usually Good”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

The food here has usually been good but the last time there my burger was so severely undercooked it was actually raw in the middle. 8 hours later I came down with e-colli which lasted for 5 days. They have got to really pay attention to the done ess of the meats. I suggest you cut your burger in half before you eat it and make sure it is appropriately done to kill any bacteria. E-colli is not fun.

“Have it Your Way - Savory Custom Veggie Burger!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Sometimes being a vegetarian at dinner time means satisfying your ancient pre-vegetarian cravings and having a veggie burger and fries. If this is you, and you like choices, and you happen to be near one of the many locations of the Counter (mostly in California but also represented in states throughout the nation) will definitely satisfy your needs.

I stopped by the Santa Monica location before a poetry reading nearby on a Sunday evening. It’s one of those places where you are given the menu and an order form and you custom “build” your burger by selecting various options on the order form...handing it to your waiter and off he goes to deliver it to the staff who will craft whatever it is that you’ve come up with. That’s always fun.

You also get to choose the size of your burger which is usually only available for the actual meat variety but as they house-make their veggie burgers you get to join in that fun as well. The usual problem with house-made veggie burgers, which was no exception here, is that they tend to be mushy and fall apart as you eat them. Not my favorite texture as a result but the flavor was uniquely savory and almost made me forget about that. The burger as delivered is nicely presented with your choice of a number of different french fries or combinations of fries. (Sweet potato fries, onion rings, parmesan fries.) They even have a fired dill pickle chip appetizer...if you’re already a fan of pickles, and you’re the type to acknowledge that anything fried is instantly better than anything not fried, then these are for you.

The food also came very quick which was a relief to me as I had a limited amount of time and a surprise as well considering how crowded the place was.

The counter in Santa a Monica is a clean, casual, family friendly atmosphere (also with a good selection of beers and wines in case you’re there on a not-family friendly occasion.) Street parking at this location is tough but free parking is available in an underground lot which you access from behind the building.

If you need a veggie burger and fries exactly how you want them...with many many cheese, topping, sauce and bun options (Check out their menu online to be overwhelmed with the choices.) Then this place is for you.

“Excellent custom burger”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

The Counter has excellent burgers that you can completely customize. Pick your protein, cheese, toppings, sauce and bun. They have a a "market selection" for each category as well which is a rotating special item - currently buffalo for meat, Gruyere for cheese and a pretzel bun. The onion strings and sweet potato fries are great and the fifty-fifty combination of the two makes a great appetizer.

“The best Hambuger Period”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

This place is expensive for a hamburger but it will be the best hamburger you would ever have eaten. I am rather a good backyard chef myself and this place beats me hands down. Everything is made to order with just the best of everything that you can put on a hamburger. If you have not eaten here you have never had the best.
