“What you'd expect from a big hotel but some disappointments”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Room on top floor was comfortable, spacious and there was a great view of the ocean. Breakfast was disappointing and car parking fee seemed high. No complementary water on the room. We've stayed at many hotels on the Californian coast during the past 3 weeks and all provided mineral water free of charge each day. It didn't spoil our stay but it was a niggle.

Huggis,
We are very sorry to hear that we didn't exceed your expectations. If there is anything we try to avoid more than anything it is providing our guests with an average experience. Glad though that you enjoyed your room and the view. Water, available in the mini bar in room, is also offered to our guests in lieu of champagne as a welcome drink and at our runner's station located at valet. Thank you very much for joining us and for providing your feedback.

We arrived in Santa Monica after a four week trip to LA from NYC. What a hotel to choose... It was amazing. Our ocean view king room had a view to die for. The staff were as wonderful. Santa Monica, you stole my heart. Viceroy, you've made a friend for life. (A special shout out to Sandrine for helping us).

Craiglegrice,
Thanks so much for your review. So glad that we were able to play a part in ending your trip on a high note. We've shared you comments with our entire team especially Ms. Sandrine. I've heard of leaving your heart in San Francisco but we'll definitely take you leaving your heart in Santa Monica instead. Hope to welcome you back soon.

We booked the hotel because we wanted to stay in SM and this hotel offered an excellent location, close to the beach and in a walkable area, just off Main St.
We arrived late and had asked for a room with view, which i would recommend otherwise you can end up with view of the parking lot in the back even though you're 2 streets from the ocean.
We got a room on the 6th floor in the end of the hall, the view was nice but we found out that we were right by the service elevator which was extremely noisy particularly in the early morning and evening.
The hotel was decorated Kelly Wearstler and it's very modern and sleek. However for such a new hotel I found it to be badly kept up. We were surprised to find loose screws and rust stains in the bath and the bedroom lamp (which was a china dog) was broken (?). Cleanliness seemed to be an issue as well since there was a huge amount of dust in the furniture, which didn't get cleaned while we were there.
I would stay here for the location but was clearly disappointed by the maintenance. This hotel was very hype when I lived in SM but it seems to be losing its luster. Hope somebody takes care of it.

Room Tip: Book a room with a view otherwise instead of an ocean view you'll be staring at the parking lot...

spdmatos,
We're very disappointed to hear that your experience did not live up to expectations. We do though greatly appreciate your feedback. The hotel has just celebrated our 10 year anniversary and along with this we plan to conduct a refresh of our rooms near the end of the year. We hope we can welcome you back when this is completed.

Arriving at viceroy was nice with a glass of champagne on booking in,nice touch, our room was lovely with a distant view of the beach but viceroy is a good 10 minute walk to Santa Monica pier & we were told their is complementary tea, coffee & pastries each day self serve on the bar however when we checked out they charged us $15 dollars each per day for guest amenity fees $25 for wifi each day so please be aware of hidden fees, also the walls are very thin we could hear the people in the next room especially our last night we had to move rooms at 10.30pm because the noise was so bad, management didn't care we where told the general manager would contact Re our concerns and over charges , they took all our details and email addresses and we still haven't heard a word from any one. .A good tip check out shutters it's right on the beach & we had dinner there & it was excellent.

FiveStarKazz,
While pleased to hear you had a pleasant arrival we were very sorry to hear of the disappointment you experienced during the remainder of your stay. We do assess a $15 per night Guest Amenity Fee as a value added service which does include coffee, tea, and pasties and wireless internet as well as many additional services. We are truly sorry if this was not communicated properly. Unfortunately neither our General Manager nor I were made aware of your concerns and we would consider it a privilege if you would allow us the opportunity to speak with you to resolve. You may call either of us at the hotel at any time. Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of your concerns.

As it was my family's first trip to the US from Australia, we wanted to stay somewhere with a bit more soul than your average international hotel. The Viceroy lived up to it's reputation of chic furnishings and moody look and feel. The service was impeccable from the moment we walked through the front door with staff both friendly and knowledgable. Our children (girls 8 & 10) were warmly welcomed and they too loved the vibe, and citrus scent, of the lobby. Even though it was early January the kids swam in the heated pool and warmed under the heaters in one of the pool side tents. Our upgraded room was spacious, particularly the bathroom, and had a spectacular view of Santa Monica beach. The hotel is well located and the valet parking is convenient (although pricey at $35). We at lunch by the pool, room service whilst recovering from jet lag and at the restaurant one evening. The food was excellent, reasonable priced for a hotel of this quality and service was excellent. If we are ever back in LA the Viceroy will be on top of the list.

Chris T,
First let me say how honored we were to be one of the first to welcome you to the States. We're so pleased to hear that the family had a great time and that you got full use of the amenities of the hotel. We know it's not an easy trip from Oz to LA but it would be our pleasure to welcome you back. Cheers!

After staying I felt like I had been ripped off! They added a 35 dollar per night to park my car, I made a local phone call from the room and got charged nearly 10 bucks! Breakfast in the Resturant was Denny's caliber at best for 20 dollars per main with a 7 dollar glass of orange juice. Average service and a mandatory 20% gratuity on the bill. The bed in the room was aweful thin and springs shot! Even the pillow sucked! Bottom line, if you don't mind being ripped off at $400 per night plus everything else like parking, and an uncomfortable bed, with a decent but still overpriced bar at night go ahead! But I would stay at a Holliday inn express before I go back!

208718,
I am very sorry to learn that you did not feel your experience was up to expectations. Service and providing a one of a kind experience are things we strive for, evident by the numerous positive reviews on this site. Our valet parking, phone, and food and beverage charges are on par and in some cases below Santa Monica standard pricing. We regularly purchase new mattresses and rotate them to keep in top condition. I am sorry that we won't have the opportunity to welcome you back but thank you for taking the time to share your comments and concerns.

We had 4 rooms at the Viceroy for our party of 8 adults ages ranging from 22 to 55. We stayed for 3 nights and as we initially drove past the building were slightly apprehensive as it isnt the most attractive building. However as soon as we entered, we were warmly welcomed at the front desk and were surrounded by the unusual but very attractive ambience of the hotel. Bedrooms were attractive, very clean and the comfort of the beds and pillows were superb. Views from the bedroom towards the ocean were great and traffic noise from the road outside was not a problem as windows were well soundproofed. Welcome glass of champagne was a nice touch and appreciated by us all. Breakfast was excellent and all the staff members we met were extremely helpful. The garden/pool area at the rear was lovely and even though it was winter we sat in the large heated tents which were very comfortable. If you want chic, hip and a bit different then the Viceroy is a good choice.

Room Tip: Ask for Ocean View and try and get a high floor - ideally top floor as you can hear people walking a...

RobertStratford,
How wonderful to hear that your party of adults with such a diverse age range all were able to have a great experience. It was our pleasure to have you all with us. We are aware that being a structure built in the 1960's our hotel may not be the prettiest girl in the room on the outside but glad you saw the inner beauty once inside the doors. We'll have to have you all back with us in the summer so you can truly appreciate the pool area. Until then, many thanks.
